PESO, birding with the 35mm macro, again

Sometimes, one can get a surprisingly good clear photo of a wild bird with a
35mm lens.

I did change to the 18-250 about halfway through the set, if folks are

Pentax K-30 "home-made" cable release?

2013-05-14 Thread Ciprian Dorin Craciun
Hello all!

I was just wondering if anyone managed to build a home-made
variant of the cable release for the Pentax K-30?

I've found the following links:

  http://www.hobbymaker.narod.ru/English/Articles/cable_sw_eng.htm
  http://poildegris.free.fr/electronique/CS205/
  http://www.photosig.com/articles/1088/article
  http://www.digisniper.com/photography/tutorials/advanced/

However it doesn't seem to work for me...

From what I've seen I get 3V voltage between the middle contact
and "ground" (contact A and B in the image below), but no voltage
between C and B, or A and B for that matter. (And just coupling A and
B doesn't either focus or shot the image, neither does C and B. I
haven't tried all three together.)

  http://www.photosig.com/articles/1088/CS-205-schema.gif

Any hints here?

Thanks,
Ciprian.

P.S.: Initially I've sent this email to the Pentax users mailing
list (Yahoo), but so far no answers (granted since yesterday), and I
hope I have more luck on this one. :)

PESO - Nightshot - "American Pie"

2013-05-14 Thread Eactivist
Okay, I took a stab at night photography of the local oil refinery.

I used a tripod, remote, 2 second timer setting, shot in manual, ISO 100,
f/11, and 1/4 a second (lower than that I wasn't getting enough light).

And I found my best results were right before it got really dark. But they
came out not very sharp (although I used a good lens). As I drove away I
realized I forgot to turn off the lens IS (I used a Canon). So I guess I
have to try again with it off and see if I do better.

I like it, Marnie. Great subject to experiment with.

I'm guessing that the sky/subject light mix might be better a little
later than this, before the sky goes quite black, so I'd try even
longer shutter times.

On sharpness: your ISO and aperture are probably optimal, depending on
the lens of course. How solid is your tripod? Have you hung a weight
from it to stabilize it more? A cotton bag with a few nearby rocks in
it might help.

Re: This is stupefying.

2013-05-14 Thread Darren Addy
Well, the package arrived and I made a video of the unboxing. Then I
contacted Pentax Imaging and recorded the chat session via video. (I
typed out everything I wanted to say first in Notepad so I could
quickly copy and paste it). So I'm fully documented all the way
around.
: )

Here's what I got: A genuine Pentax K-5 II with 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 ED
AL [IF] DC WR **BOX** with the lens removed and warranty card removed.
Everything else was there in new condition, and I had the Serial
Number Card for the "K-5II 18-135WR Kit". Interestingly, the Pentax
box was damaged pretty significantly on the side that held the
18-135mm lens. I would suggest that there are places that buy new
damaged box goods from retailers at a substantial discount. They
maximize their profit by splitting up the goods and selling them
separately.

What I ordered is in flawless shape. Took two exposures and the
shutter count is revealed as "2". So I contacted Pentax Imaging and
used their Live Chat window. Got a "Matthew P." as my rep. What I
said:

Hi Matthew. Hello, I purchased a NEW K-5 II body from Amazon and I was
excited to see it arrive today. When I opened the box, it contained
what I purchased but came in a Pentax box labeled "K-5 II" and "DA
18-135mm f3.5-5.6 AL [IF] DC WR". There was no lens in the box,
meaning that I did get what I ordered. The body appears new and the
shutter count was at 1 on my first exposure. However, there was no
WARRANTY CARD inside the package.

I did get a Serial Number card that appears to have had something
torn off (perforations at the top and bottom). The serial number is
4668328 and the number beneath the bar code is 4668328220607. It is
for a "K-5II 18-135WR KIT". I have never had a problem with any of the
previous Pentax cameras or lenses that I have purchased (K200D, K-x,
K-5) but the lack of a warranty card is troubling. Is there some way
that I can still register it and get it

covered under warranty?

His answer:

Matthew P: I would return it. Id change retailers. But, yes, as long
as you have a copy of the proof of purchase, you're covered under
warranty. You do not need a warranty card
Darren Addy: USA warranty?
Matthew P: Yes
Matthew P: 1 year from the date of purchase
Darren Addy: So if I have a problem, who do I contact? (Just to be clear)
Matthew P: Pentax Technical Support @ 800-877-0155. Or get into chat.
We're here Mon-Fri 9:30AM-6:30PM Eastern Standard Time.
Matthew P: Contact us!
Darren Addy: OK. Thank you very much, matthew. I will warn people from
this retailer. Thx!

So consider yourself warned.
For my part, I'm happy with the deal I got. My main concerns were: 1)
Is it really new, 2) Does it come with everything it should, 3) Am I
covered by a USA Pentax warranty. Since the answers to all are "yes"
I'm going to keep it. It seems pretty amazing to get a K-5 II for over
$160 LESS than I got my K-5 body about 1 year ago. Stupifying, even.
: )

Baby bird was just sitting on top of the hedge next to the sidewalk.
It seemed to think that nobody else existed for any purpose other than
to feed it. It's sibling was a little more shy and stayed inside the
hedge. Momma bird was going apeshit, divebombing everybody that walked
past, and doing a great job of calling attention to her babies.

My friend might even have gotten a picture of me photographing baby
with Momma sitting on my head.

The 18-250 is a surprisingly sharp lens. combine that with you'll need to
crop a lot less with it than you will with a prime, and when the dust settles,
you're likely to end up with nearly as good of resolution.

I think that this is my best shot with the Tammy:

Great start and worthy of revisiting. The IS thing can go either way and
Canon may be in the leave on all the time for longer lenses but I would
try it w/o. Next time stay there until it gets really dark; these
cameras have the eyes of an owl. Mirror lock-up to limit vibration
might make a difference but I have never tried it. Perfection is
illusive in night photography. Enough platitudes to keep you going back,
I hope.

Off to our cabin on a Pacific-Northwest island; I left the enchanting
Fuji mirrorless behind and took along the K-5 with a couple lenses,
but never managed to take off the 100mm F2.8 macro.

I still like the K-5 but... damn, it’s big and bulky and heavy, those
prisms carry a cost. -T

You may also be aware of the
"Pentax Two-Year Extended Warranty for the K5, K5-II, K5-IIs, KR,
K-30, K-01 Digital SLR Cameras"
available for $20 from B&H or Adorama. (I wasn't or I would have
bought one before now!)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/753276-REG/Pentax_80227_Two_Year_Extended_Warranty_for.html

The dpreview thread I linked to above also had this bit of info when
someone wondered if buying from a non-authorized retailer might be a
problem:

"I spoke to Randy at Pentax this morning and he said there wouldn't be
an issue if it is sold through Amazon. They are recognized as an
authorized dealer even if it is sold by a third party. In addition,
he said I could buy the two year extended warranty from BH and the
camera from Amazon so that is what I will be doing today. $20.00 to
extend the warranty for two years is worth it in my book "

So I plan on getting that, as well. The warranty must be purchased
within 30 days of the camera.

a "tad overexposed", rather than half of it being either blown out

Re: Pentax K-30 "home-made" cable release?

2013-05-14 Thread Larry Colen
Pentax uses the same cable release as the low end Canon cameras,
so they are available premade for less than the individual parts
cost from places like linkdelight, dealextreme, ephotoinc etc.

I recently splurged and paid $20 or so for the intervalometer version.

My sympathy and condolences. I feel your pain.
A couple of nights ago, I noticed that the focus ring on mine was
wobbly, and the barrel shifts around a bit too. I had a similar
problem a while back with my 31, which I sent off to Pentax, followed
by a big chunk of money, and it came back working just fine.

Mine isn't in critical shape at the moment, but even worse than the
cost of repairs will be doing without it for a while, It is one of
my most used lenses, and the closest I have is a 90/2.8.

I have considered picking up an 85/1.4 to use while the 77 is in the shop.

I didn't know about the compatibility with Cannon (someone else
also suggested this on the pentax-users mailing list).

I'll check both E-bay, DealExtreme, etc., unfortunately there are
a few disadvantages:
* I hope they ship in Romania;
* it will take forever to get them; (2-3 weeks at least if from China;)
* I'll have to go to customs (if not shipped from EU), and I have
no idea what fee they'll apply (it also depends on the customs officer
"mood");

> I recently splurged and paid $20 or so for the intervalometer version.

There is a single Pentax reseller in Romania that has it, and as
I've said on the pentax-users mailing list:

As a side note about costs, in Romania where I live, the CS-205
from Pentax costs about 35 pounds (after roughly applying exchange
rate), and the "home made" parts at most 2 pounds. I don't want to be
cheep, but paying for the CS-205 almost 10% of the camera cost seems a
little bit too much... (And unfortunately there is only one Pentax
reseller.)

This means roughly 50 US$ only for the basic CS-205 version...

Ciprian.

Re: Pentax K-30 "home-made" cable release?

2013-05-14 Thread Ciprian Dorin Craciun
Ok. Based on the feedback I've received, I've managed to make it work:
* the previously cited articles are correct, and they work on the
K-30; thus based on the schema below, to focus connect A and B, and
for trigger both A, B and C together (only B and C doesn't work);
  http://www.photosig.com/articles/1088/CS-205-schema.gif
* for the focus to work it must be enabled in the custom functions
menu (search for the entry with "remote control" in the name);

Ciprian.

Thanks Bruce, also Dan, Don, Aahz, Marnie and all those that looked.

The image that came to my mind was the Penguin from the old Batman TV show.

One detail that I forgot to mention to Aahz regarding lens sharpness
is that almost any decent lens is going to be nice and sharp in the f/8-f/11
range. So it is important to use lenses where they are the strongest.
I suspect that my DA35 macro is a lot sharper than the 18-250 at 35mm and f/4.
It's nearly infinitely sharper at f/2.8, or at 1:1 magnification.

Here's my own recent dusk photography result, from our backyard Kanzan

I lit this with an AF540FGZ inside a 36" umbrella softbox on a 9-foot

composed until I got the clouds in behind. I also added a green gel to
the flash and colour-corrected that in Lightroom which caused the sky
and clouds to go pinker to better match the flowers.

I feel like the overall image is too dark. The lights are nothing but spots. If
they were to illuminate the structure here and there, edge sharpness would very
likely be apparent.
Using a small aperture would produce a star effect, but add only to the

Here's my own recent dusk photography result, from our backyard Kanzan
Cherry standard, giving one of its best shows this year:

http://www.flickr.com/bruce_m_walker/8722338154/lightbox/

I lit this with an AF540FGZ inside a 36" umbrella softbox on a 9-foot
stand that I extended up into the tree. I stood on a ladder and
composed until I got the clouds in behind. I also added a green gel to
the flash and colour-corrected that in Lightroom which caused the sky
and clouds to go pinker to better match the flowers.

K20D, DA* 55/1.4 @ 6.3, 1/160th, ISO 100; Lightroom, Photoshop.

Maybe you missed it, but a couple of months ago I asked about shadow

Okay, I took a stab at night photography of the local oil refinery.

I used a tripod, remote, 2 second timer setting, shot in manual, ISO

100,

f/11, and 1/4 a second (lower than that I wasn't getting enough light).

And I found my best results were right before it got really dark. But

they

came out not very sharp (although I used a good lens). As I drove away I
realized I forgot to turn off the lens IS (I used a Canon). So I guess I
have to try again with it off and see if I do better.
