Re: Annoyed by BuyDig -- big Boo!

2013-07-19 Thread DagT
Nice thing about having your own domain. I use a special email address for
shops like amazon, key and B&H. If the spam gets too annoying I just dump the
old address and change to a new one in the shops I still want to use.

Also, when you have several emails random spam trying to look like mail from
something else, like ebay or linkedin, tends to come to the wrong address and
not the one I use for them :-)

Re: RACE WHEELS

2013-07-19 Thread Alan C
Some of the locals in Phalaborwa have found a relatively inexpensive way of
upgrading their "old" mountain bikes to something about as futuristic as
yours. They buy a "no name" carbon fibre frame for about R5000 , transfer
all the other bits from the old bike & then stick on a few transfers. The
mass reduction is considerable & they look good.

A very pretty girl, Walt, with a pleasant expression. Nicely oof background.

I'd darken her ear somewhat. A little rim light from behind would have
been nice to separate her hair from the black background, esp. near
her upper forehead, right. Perhaps that line is clearer in the colour
original?

For me it would be. I'm not that bad, but it drives me nuts to have folders
full of stuff that now way will I ever have time even to glance at let alone
read. Culling mail folders is work. I've taken a lesson from my lex-wife. I
make a realistic assessment: Am I ever gonna do anything with this? If not, it
goes in the trash---when I get around to it. Seems like i'm always behind.

PESO - Ceramic Pot on a Wall

G'day all

Apologies for the naff title - couldn't think of anything catchy.

This is from our USA trip - taken in Santa Fe, which has to be one of
the most photogenic cities I've ever been in. I really like the way
many homes have decorations on their external walls.

This faded ceramic pot caught my eye:

http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1370864/PESO/slides/_IGP2142-K5-1-peso.html

I also played around with it using Nik Silver Efex

Comments/suggestions welcome, especially whether the colour or

Interesting -- even before the various lists I've been started changing
their policies around a decade ago, I'd say that at least half the lists
I've been on were not reply-to list. As for why, aside from the issue
about boo-boos with intended private messages, it's a way to control list
volume. Another reason is that some mailing lists have restricted access
and anyone not on the list participating in the conversation needs to be
cc'd, and the Reply-To header mucks with that.

Finally, some wankers have religion about Holy Computers and believe that
Reply-To is a sacrilege; I'm not in that category. ;-)

I can see how one might accidentally slip and send a private message
to the list – been there, done that – but if I compare the ratio of
private emails to public (entire list) emails I've sent in reply to
PDML messages it's well over 100:1.

Signing on to an email list and then replying to individuals as
standard practice seems like walking onto a stage before an audience
of 1000 people and then shutting off the microphone to the P.A. and
making a cell phone call to a single audience member. It might be
useful on occasion but it's a bizarre default setting.

Re: Available model photography

2013-07-19 Thread Walt

Great tip-sheet, Larry.

In my extremely limited experience of getting people to pose for me
(though, I suppose the family portraiture I've been doing lately is
somewhat applicable), I've found that simply reassuring people that it's
not in my interest to take crappy photographs of them seems to help.

Still, there are some people who, when placed in front of a camera, see
a firing squad. I'm one of them, so I can sympathize. And maybe that
helps a little. I was able to get one particular lady to laugh a few
times by not berating her, but poking a little good-natured fun at her
obvious fear. And what I ended up capturing was a moment of shy laughter
-- which, as it happens, captured her personality. And once I captured
that, I made sure to let her know, "Now THAT'S what I'm looking for!"
And that seemed to help her relax.

Now that I think about it, one of my quirks when I'm shooting and the
photos just aren't going my way is to utter an occasional, "Hmm..." or
"Mm-kay..." as the clunkers pile up, until I finally get a good one --
at which point I'll let them know in no uncertain terms. That little bit
of positive reinforcement seems to work much better than simply doling
out compliments in getting people to drop their guards. It's as though
they sense my excitement at getting a good shot and want to do whatever
it takes to help me get more -- as if the whole matter stops being about
themselves and suddenly becomes a matter of making good pictures. I've
even noticed that people will start coming up with their own ideas --
some good, some less so -- but I humor them anyway, and it seems to
foster a cooperative relationship.

With regard to showing them the photos, I've only done that on the back
of the camera. One thing I've learned is that some images look great on
the camera display but horrible on a laptop screen, and I don't want to
risk showing them a photo that might disappoint them. I guess it's a
little imperious, but my attitude is that it's my job to go through the
photos and decide which ones are keepers and which ones aren't, and I
don't have any way of knowing that until I've gone through them all and
processed them. After all, they have no idea what a photo might look
like when converted to black & white with a red or blue filter. And
there's no point in letting them see blemishes that won't be there after
a little bit of touching up. So, I tell them that I'm going to take them
home, go through them, pick out the good ones, do some processing and
get back to them in a few days. They seem more than happy with that
arrangement (so far).

free?".

I've been working for a while on the concept of making my subjects feel more
comfortable in front of the camera, but I'm realizing that it is just part
of the bigger question of how to teach your subjects to be better at
modeling. So, first, I will pose (heh!) this question:
"What to people need to be taught to enable the photographer to get better
pictures of them?"

I can see answers ranging from "The model doesn't need to understand anything,
it's the photographer's job to know all that and just tell the model what to
do" to "It's good for the model to understand at least the basics of how
certain poses and their position relative to the light affect their appearance".

I started out from the premise of "Photo sessions for the shy", and here is
what I wrote on the subject of making people feel comfortable in front of the

For many, if not most, people, the idea of a photo shoot is both enticing
and intimidating. If you are like most people, you do not have any photos
of your self that are not horrible, which makes the thought of good photos
seem at best, a pleasant fantasy.

How many of the photos of you were taken by someone shoving a point and shoot
camera (or a cellphone) in your face, and then berating you for not smiling?
Even most movie stars are not going to look good in those conditions. Even
apart from the technical limitiations of the camera, the background will
probably be cluttered, the lighting bad, and very few people can give a
genuine, relaxed smile in those conditions.

One very important thing to keep in mind is that a good photograph of
you is not necessarily one that makes you look like a movie star. For me
a good photograph of someone is a beautiful photo, that looks like the
person being photographed.

The most important aspect of getting a good photograph of someone is
getting them to relax. It is hard to relax, however, when just abou

Considering Flickr is under the Yahoo banner, I wonder if this isn't
related to the problems with the Flickr API's that weren't working earlier.

In any event, flickriver and the Flickr Uploadr seem to be working now,

You're not making yourself any friends here, you know.

A lot of this people here have been part of this list for many years.
The way the list works now has served us well for all that time, and
we really don't need somebody telling us how we could do it "better",
for some particular personal viewpoint of what "better" might be.

"Reply" goes to the list; MIME attachements get the message rejected.
(and if your inbox fills up, you get your list account suspended).

Thanks again, Gerrit.

The K-5's shake reduction must be a bit better than the K-x's. I was
able to get reasonably sharp images with it as slow as 1/30 sec., but I
had to brace or rest my elbows on a solid surface to do it.

The K-5 just seems to keep on doing different impressive things.

Looks like a good start, don't forget to do a plain copyediting and
proofreading session before you publish this. (You have a couple of
spots where the wording is a bit awkward, I assumed you didn't want a
writing critique at this point.)

One thing you didn't mention is the option of taking photos of someone
doing an activity. (Although this is far from guaranteed to work, I took
a really nice photo of my mom cooking and she hated it because it made
her look angry, so I deleted it.)

That reminds me, I've seen advice somewhere (probably this list) that the
photographer should make clear that any photos the model hates will get
deleted. That probably helps reluctant models relax.

Very cute.
My son's 130 pound Golden Retriever is almost 10 and slowed by the
heat and age. It will be a sad day when he passes, and they'll need
another dog. It will be hard to find one with as much personality and
friendly disposition. Maybe another Golden, but not so big next time.
  This one's a giant!

Goldens can be very big dogs. Fortunately, they are also very soft tempered.

I know you train dogs and favor Rotties. I wonder about disposition
with their fearsome reputation.

Intact male Rotties need a very strong willed owner, as they are
generally a pretty dominant breed. Having said that, Jester is a
dominant asshole, high drive dog from a high drive litter. As such, he
is somewhat of a special case in this regard. At he same time, he
doesn't have a mean bone in his body, he just wants his own way, and is
prepared to do whatever doggie thing he needs to do to get it. A weak
willed owner who is in the habit of letting the dog make his own
decisions would be what we call a fail of an owner.

Our last male (Rollei) had a very gentle disposition, was relatively
willing to please, and for the most part, was on the same page as we were.

Most Rotties that get in trouble do so because they have idiot owners
who don't understand the level of engagement they have to have with
their dog. When I am out with my dog, that is all I am doing. I'm not
talking on my cell phone, or texting or really doing much of anything
other than being with my dog. This is quite different from when I had
Leica. I could trust her to not cause anyone any problems. Jester, OTOH,
is quite dog aggressive (Bella, our Belgian Shepherd is worse), and will
also get very aggressive with anyone who he thinks might be a threat.
Hold his gaze for more than a few seconds at your own risk.
As I said, he is a special case, a very exceptional dog, but not one for
a weak handler, and honestly, not really a good dog in public.

Investigate your breeder carefully, Rotties, while not as prone to
genetic problems as Goldens, are prone to a few cancers, as well as
elbow and hip dysplasia, and also, take the time to investigate your
puppy's lineage.
Had I done this prior to getting Jester, I would have asked for a
different dog than the high drive male pick. After having him for a few
months, I finally got around to tracing his lineage. Amazingly, I was
able to trace his sire's side back to 1912 or thereabouts. Every male on
his sire's side had a Schutzhund title, and his line had been used for
all sorts of guard work in Germany, including guarding POW and
concentration camps during WWII.

He's a tough dog from a line of tough dogs.

A good starter Rottweiler would be a soft tempered female. Leica (my
first Rottie) was such a dog. Very smart, wanted to please, and didn't
like to displease. As such, she was easy to train, and never made the
same mistake twice (and only made a few mistakes in her nearly 11 year
life).

I would recommend the breed to anyone with the following caveats:
*If you are not an experienced owner, pick the softest female you can
from the litter. You will end up with a dog that acts sort of like a
Labrador, except calmer and with a lot more brains.
*If you are an experienced owner, but haven't owned a guard breed
before, a soft male would be an OK choice, be prepared to put the puppy
well and truly in it's place the first time it steps out of line and you
will likely never have a problem again.
*If you are an experienced owner, with extensive experience with guard
breeds, then by all means, choose a drivey male. They are a lot of fun,
and the rewards are tremendous, but they have to be handled with care
around people who aren't experienced with dogs. They will push their
boundaries, so it is very important to be ready, willing and ABLE to put
the dog in his place at a moment's notice.

In all cases, Rotties need some sort of job to keep them occupied. They
are a very smart breed, and they get bored easily. Like all bored dogs,
they can get destructive.
Fortunately, they are quite easy to keep engaged. They like obedience
work, and this should be started the same day that they come into the
house. Jester carries my camera gear in a backpack when we are out. It
gives him something to concentrate on, and it keeps him settled. Don't
just take your dog for a walk, do some formal obedience training for a
few minutes, and then walk for a while, and then do some more obedience.
Find out what sort of reward system makes your dog happy, and use it.
Leica was good with a tickle on the ear and being told she done good.
Jester, being a lot drivier, needs more engagement from me. A nice game
of tug turns his crank quite nicely, and keeps him very happy, and very
willing to work. If you aren't physically up to the task of playing tug
with a 125 or so pound dog with a lot of determination, a high drive
male might not be the best choice, si

Question about Tokina Zoom 28-210 vis a vis Pentax

2013-07-19 Thread Ann Sanfedele

the friend whose wedding I'm shooting ended up acquiring a Tokina 28-210
zoom which he intentds to give me... He knows nothing about such things
, and is away from home now, but it is a bayonet mount and the rear
element had a red dot on it. What I don't remember is if Pentax

is the only SLR with clue to positioning the lens to body for mounting
or are there several?

I didn't see it, this was me asking questions over phone but I figured
Bayonet mount, good zoom - worth checking out more anyway.

FSF: LX body, Super Tak 35mm f2.0, SMC K 35mm f2 and more...

2013-07-19 Thread Darren Addy
I've got a few items that need to find new homes. Actual shipping will
need to be added to the prices below. I'll be happy to ship WORLDWIDE
to pdml members.

Firstly,
I've got a nice working LX body (the later version that goes to 3200
ASA). It's main apology is a dimple dent to the right of the film
advance lever (top side, towards the rear). Doesn't seem to have
affected anything, just a cosmetic boo-boo (and one that isn't seen
from the subject's side)... $195

Next,
I have a minty looking Super Takumar 35mm f/2 (yep, 2.0), It comes
with original caps, and new looking case. It also comes with the
matching Takumar metal hood which comes in it's own new looking case.
This lens has the thorium element and I haven't given it UV treatment
yet, so may require color temp. correction in post. Cosmetically this
kit looks new, except that the previous owner decided to scratch out
the word Takumar on the hood and front ring. (I KNOW!).$189

Next,
Hard to find, SMC K 35mm f2.0 with original caps & hard case (third
party) ... $339
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/photographic-equipment-sale/231240-sale-scarce-super-multi-coated-k-35mm-f2-yep-2-0-gorgeous-case-worldwide.html

Next,
A really Top Shelf, Pentax-M 28mm f2.8 with Genuine Pentax UV filter ... $89
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/photographic-equipment-sale/231238-sale-top-shelf-pentax-m-28mm-f2-8-genuine-pentax-uv-filter-worldwide.html

Pentax-M 50mm f1.7.$39

Pentax-A 35-105mm macro (the famous stack of primes)...$149

Re: PESO - Ceramic Pot on a Wall

The monochrome brings out the texture in the wall, but it doesn't do

I wonder if selectively de-saturating the wall might be effective?
Perhaps not quite all the way to monochrome.

That's not the question Ann had, though.

My Olympus 4/3 lenses have a bayonet mount, and a red dot for positioning.

I would not be at all surprised to find that there are other systems that
also have red dots, so even though the Tokina 28-810 lens has a bayonet
mount and a red dot there is no guarantee that it is, in fact, a K-mount.

I can see how one might accidentally slip and send a private message
to the list - been there, done that - but if I compare the ratio of
private emails to public (entire list) emails I've sent in reply to
PDML messages it's well over 100:1.

That's almost certainly true for me for all mailing lists I've been on.
But the point is that the cost of sending a private e-mail public is
also much higher, and I've seen a lot of mildly embarrassing, some
moderately embarrasing, and a few outright damaging (e.g. disclosing
major secrets). I don't think it's 100:1 in that direction, but I also
don't think it's a slam dunk that the cost/benefit analysis is totally
oriented toward reply-to list on this one ground.

(I do realize, of course, that reply-to sender doesn't completely prevent
stupid disclosure of private/secret info, one only needs to look at
damnyouautocorrect.com to prove otherwise.)

Aarrrgggh! Minty

2013-07-19 Thread Larry Colen
Damn it people, when referring to a lens in good condition, the adjective
is "mint", technically "mint condition", as in perfect condition, like a
coin that has just left the mint, where coins are produced.

If your lens is minty, then you should look for toothpaste smeared on
it giving it that minty smell.

Setting up a list with the default not being 'reply to list' is self-defeating.

You'll notice how he often appears to deliberately misunderstand

Re: FSF: LX body, Super Tak 35mm f2.0, SMC K 35mm f2 and more...

2013-07-19 Thread Walt

The ol' Good Cop-Bad Cop routine . . .

As for whether or not it's ideally suited for portraiture, I really
can't mount an argument against you. I guess what I like about it is the
focal range (which seems near-ideal for portraiture) in combination with
the sharpness. I have an A 28-135 that is "reasonably" sharp and I've
managed to get some decent shots with it, but it just doesn't stack up
to the F 50/1.7 -- which is a hell of a lot to live up to. But, as best
I can tell, that A 35-105 comes pretty damned close -- and I really like
the close-focusing.

Anyway ... yes, I DO want that lens. Now I just have to figure out how
I'm going to pay for the blasted thing. Though, I do have a little chump
change coming to me from my most recent portrait shoot.

Hmm.

In fact, just about the only time I use any lens wide-open is when I
absolutely have to have the shutter speed, or am just tinkering to see how
shallow a DOF I can get. Generally, I shoot my F50/1.7 at f/2.8 or higher. I
tend to like a lot of sharpness in my portraits for catch lights and fine
hair detail, and just smooth out any skin imperfections in post.

The shots at the flickriver link Darren sent seemed to have pretty nice,
smooth bokeh at f/5 -- which is likely where I'd tend to use it most often.

And now, I'm once again filled with envy and resentment.

My 28-80 2.8 Tokina zoom is built like a tank and is better with film than with
digital. The zooms that really seem to have gone up in quality (optical and
build) are the Sigmas and Tamrons, IMO. Since the Tokina is a gift, that trumps
paying for a Pentax, Tamron, or Sigma. :-)

2013-07-19 Thread Zos Xavius
Its an amazing lens. My copy is pretty beat up, but I wouldn't part
with it for anything. In fact I want to fix it up. I think even my
"awful" takumar 70-210 is a better lens for portraits. in fact I think
its kind of a sleeper.

just got FA 50mm f 1.4 back

2013-07-19 Thread Christine Aguila
Hello PDML:

Well, I sent in my FA 50mm f1.4 & my DA* 50-135mm f2.8 in to CRIS. The FA
returned pretty quick--just got it an hour ago, and looks to be ok. Here are
two quickie test shots. Metadata is above the photo.

http://www.caguila.com/darreltest/index.html

I'm getting a replacement motor for the DA*. I purchased the lens 4th quarter
of 2007, and this is the first repair I've had on the lens--so that makes
nearly a 6 year run with absolutely no hiccups until this recent service. Not
too bad I guess.

Curious thing about the replacement motor though. The service guy at CRIS said
they had to order the part, which seem well curious to me. Isn't replacing the
motor a common repair? Wouldn't they have motors on hand?

Anyway, the DA* repair takes about two-four weeks. I got the FA 50mm back 10
days after I called to give go-ahead on repairs after getting estimate via
email.

Well, so far, so good. Keep your fingers crossed for the DA*.

Cheers, Christine

P.S. Still keeping up with PAW but the last three shots are so boring I
decided to spare the list the pain. :-)

Murphy's Law of parts departments: If you have the part in stock you
will never need it again. It will sit on the shelf until the end of
