Answer for the second part of the question:
If the manual is in PDF, you can open it with e.g. Acrobat Reader.
If it is printed, - you can employ the acient (almost forgotten) technique
for turning pages with your finger tips.

NBC Sports Network carried live coverage of every race, which our
TiVo dutifully recorded for us.

While I'd have liked to get up to the city and point a Pentax at
the spectacle, I just couldn't bring myself to dedicate the amount
of time I'd need to stake out a decent photo spot for around 90
minutes of racing (if we were lucky enough to get both races),
especially since with the exception of the last few days most of
the shore-based shots I saw had a significant amount of haze.
And, of course, fan attendance over the last few days has been
much higher, so I'd have had to be in position even earlier!

My opinion is that Oracle had what was basically a quicker boat,
and they learned faster on the water than the Kiwis. Every day
the Team USA boat was noticeably better than the day before.

The Kiwis started off the event with a perhaps a slight edge,
while Oracle were still coming to terms with their equipment.
But the combination of Oracle switching in Ben Ainslie as the
tactician, and the Oracle shore crew being better at changing
the boat overnight to get more speed, tipped the balance the
other way. Then a little bit of bad luck (like one race being
called because the wind speed got too high, and another one
because the race exceeded the extremely tight time limit) took
what looked like two certain race wins away from the Kiwis,
either one of which would have given them the America's Cup.
That meant more days of racing, and every day Oracle got just
a little bit faster. Put all that together with some rather
uncharacteristic slips from the usually unflappable Dean Barker
(the NZ helmsman) and the writing was on the wall.

I'm disappointed, but not surprised, by the result. If the
Kiwis had managed to pull off the win my wife and I were
considering a return visit to Auckland in a couple of years.

no, there will never be a CS7; they simply wrote the CS6 upgrade terms

Yeah, I had to do that with another Adobe product when I was a student &
qualified for the student/teacher edition. Maybe it was Lightroom 3.

It wasn't a big deal, I had to fax them a copy of my student ID & the
receipt for my tuition that semester.

Photoshop student/teacher never worked for me because I was already a
registered user & the upgrade price was less than student/teacher. By
the time CS6 came along with the jump to the extended edition I had
already graduated.

Student/teacher was a good deal because they didn't disqualify it from
future upgrades. Maybe they'll see the error of their ways and someday
there will be another version. I don't know, but for now, I'm not
signing up for the clud version.

What I *did* find surprising is that he kept the K-01 for its VIDEO

does make a heck of a range for video (effective 27mm-375mm). I see
that Pentax has replaced it with a 18-270mm lens which puts you over

Similar feelings here, for some lenses in particular. Actually, moving away
from SLR lenses, I find more of the image qualities I like in RF lenses
overall, at least for the shorter focal lengths. That's one of the reasons I
moved to TTL mirrorless and Leica RF ... access to lenses that work better to
my eye.

I'm truly delighted by the old Zeiss uncoated lenses I've acquired with the
Robot cameras, and the new-yet-old Voigtländer designs epitomized by the Color
Skopar 21, 28, 35 and 50 mm. I was just testing the Color Skopar 28mm f/3.5
with the E-PL1 ... it is such a fine lens. :-)

I don't read shootouts and comparisons very often, and rarely take them
seriously. They generally don't tell me much. Working with a given lens tells
me what I want to know.

Of course, I can't say for sure. But the indications are that they are in
production and sell in modest but regular quantities. Four-thirds.org keeps
comprehensive lens listings for FourThirds and Micro-FourThirds, and marks them
when they are discontinued ...
http://four-thirds.org/en/fourthirds/lens_chart.html is for FourThirds SLR.
They seem well connected to the manufacturers.

Just because new models have not been delivered since 2008 (and I'm not so sure
of that date, to be honest, I think it was more like 2010) doesn't mean that
they have sold no new lenses. Remember that the E-5 was new in Fall 2010, and
they didn't discontinue the E-XX and E-XXX bodies until sometime in the first
quarter of 2011. There are still likely some NOS of the lower end bodies to be
sold, and the E-5 was only very recently marked as no longer available at B&H
Photo. There is a substantial community of professional photographers still who
use Olympus equipment and buy gear on a regular basis, it's not all just
consumer sales.

A downer: what few of the lovely Panasonic/Leica lenses (Vario-Elmarit-D
14-50/2.8-3.5 ASPH OIS, Vario-Elmarit-D 14-150/3.5-5.6 ASPH OIS, and Summilux-D
25/1.4 ASPH) that sell today are almost certainly being sourced from what are
now diminishing existing stocks (they were never very abundantly available to
begin with), and Sigma has discontinued all of their FourThirds SLR lenses.
(Not that I have much love for Sigma lenses anyway... ;-)

But the upside is that the Micro-FourThirds world is jumping with great new
lenses every year. There are about 30 mFT lenses available, more coming from
three or four vendors.

The new E-M1 promises to be a very very good body, and completes the fusion of
the two mounts with the right features to support both. So at this point, if
FourThirds mount is gone, its fully compatible descendant is going to carry the
banner for the format AND the lenses for the foreseeable future, and it doesn't
really matter if the SLR lenses are obsoleted and pass out of production
forever. The good news is that those who own them ... myself included ... are
not orphaned as the derivative mount and OEM adapter works just as well, if not
better, than the original did with the same lenses. And that alone is pretty
amazing stuff!

I prefer vintage glass actually for rendering qualities. I find newer
lenses a bit too clinical in their rendering IMO. And I'm talking
about how the lens paints the image. I like a bit of character in
there. A lot of classic lens designs have a look that is very much
missing IMO. I would also put my M28/3.5 or M50/1.4 against any modern
lenses. Asides from better flare resistance which the old primes are
somewhat lacking in, I don't think there is much to complain about
with many of the old primes. CA seems somewhat problematic in some
cases (like that FA24 you mention), but then I get more CA from modern
digitally "corrected" zooms. BTW, in a recent shootout of 24mm lenses,
the only two that came close to the canon L lens were an old Olympus
OM 24 2.8 and the Sigma superwide 2 looked pretty decent too. The
Pentax FA*24 2.0 was out of the race from the start.

Are they really still in production? The last new 4/3 lens was 2008. 5

No.

It means that if you want to use a PDF workflow with Blurb, I would suggest
going to the Blurb.com website right away and reading up on how to successfully
create a book that you submit using PDF files. Do it early, before you invest
too much work into the design and finishing of your book project as you will
almost certainly have to re-do things if you don't understand the process and
workflow.

For MOST books, unless you have something extraordinary you want to produce,
I'd start with their Booksmart application or use Lightroom (for photo books)
and see if the options and capabilities they offer do what you need. A PDF
workflow is more work, but if you're good with Adobe InDesign or other PDF
tools, it allows you to do a lot of things that aren't in the capability of the
available templates.

The sailing in these big catamarans with hydrofoils is superb. Sailing
racing is a bit like chess - tactics and the ability to think several
moves ahead are crucial. No engines here mate - wind, water and winning
ability.

Oracle Team USA brought in Brit Ben Ainslie as rteam tactician after
trailing about half the races over a 19 race series. They then won every
race following, back to back, and won the final race today to take the
oldest sporting trophy in history.

Until now most sailing racing wasn't really classed as a spectator
sport, but these new boats change a lot.

Search Youtube and have a look at some of the action. Not for everyone,
but anyone who's ever been sailing will be hooked.

Cheers!

You are mistaken, fortunately. There are no rumors regarding a

Re: OT: 5-star book on reading musical notation free until Friday

2013-09-25 Thread John
Everyone in the school I went to was automatically enrolled in band in
the 4th grade, and they had instruments to loan out if your parents
couldn't afford to rent a better instrument (hire purchase or rent-to-own).

All the other 4th grade students got wind instruments or percussion. I
got the double bass, which was quickly switched to the cello when it
became obvious I had no way to transport the instrument from school to
home and back for practice & lessons.

Not to mention I didn't have a ladder at home to stand on so I could
reach the fingerboard. I was less than 5 ft tall then.

I know I learned the fundamentals of reading music, but I could not
carry on with the cello after the first year of free lessons. I have
some vague memories, but today, I'm hopelessly lost with sheet music.

It means that, in the future, lenses should be designed with the light path
optimized for digital sensors in mind. This has no influence on their use with
film cameras, if such use is desired. If the manufacturer continues to desire
compatibility with older lenses for new bodies, it means that sensor
customization and optimization to include those older lenses must be
incorporated as well.

Offset micro-lenses is only one implementation available to optimize a sensor
for older lenses. It's not the one being used by Leica in the M Type 240, for
instance. Canon used offset micro-lenses in their first full-frame DSLR, but it
raised some interesting issues with specifically the shorter focal lengths that
they were trying to correct for. They've changed designs since then too.

> The telecentricity Olympus loudly promoted was a natural

No, it isn't. SLR lenses are not necessarily telecentric designs. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecentric_lens for a simple definition of a
telecentric lens design.

SLR lens designs have to clear the swinging mirror, which with short focal
lengths tends to mean using a retrofocus or inverted-telephoto design to
project the primary nodal point to the rear of the lens allowing the hard bits
to move forward out of the way of the mirror, rather than a symmetric design
which tends to have hard bits projecting deep into the camera as focal length
decreases. A side-effect of these SLR short-focal-length lens designs is that
they're more easily compatible with digital sensors because of this. (For
instance, the Pentax FA24/2 AL ... a terrific lens on film ... performed poorly
on digital sensors, showing both lateral and longitudinal chromatic
aberrations, issues with corner sharpness, etc. Other SLR lenses have done
better.)

Many pre-digital SLR lenses do work very well indeed. Few to none work as well
as lenses which are optimized for digital sensors with respect to measurable
lens performance criteria. However, I often use older lenses because they have
pleasing aberrations, image rendering, and quirks that I like—so what "works
well" is a judgement call beyond simplistic performance measurement.

I guess you want to debate the meaning of "dead and buried."

To me, dead and buried means the bodies that take a lens' mount are out of
production, and the lens cannot be used on any other in-production body, with
or without adapter, and provide the lens full functionality. Most dead and
buried lens mounts are also out of production, although there are some
exceptions. For example, Pentax M42 lenses are "dead and buried" as there are
no longer any bodies being manufactured that can be used with them and provide
the full features of the mount (auto-diaphragm, open aperture metering, etc).
Canon FL/FD lenses are dead and buried, as are Minolta MC/MD, Leica R, Exacta,
Konica AR, Beseler Topcon, and probably a host of others.

FourThirds SLR lenses, however, are a) still in production, and b) capable of
being used on other bodies with an OEM adapter for their full function. They
are fully supported by more than one manufacturer for parts and service. People
are still buying them to use on new bodies. I'd hardly call that "dead and
buried". They are in the process of being obsoleted, however, as their

Sorry. I can be a little a-caustic at times.

In any event, this is what I'm contemplating as my next guitar:

http://www.musicradar.com/us/reviews/guitars/lag-tramontane-t66a-363835

It seems to get rave reviews in the bang-for-buck category. I'll check
to see if they have any Seagull's in stock to play with, but for now the
Lâg is awfully tempting for the price.

2013-09-25 Thread Walt

Yikes! Those images are a bit gorier than the one I saw.

I'm glad the ones in my yard are relatively small. I've seen much larger
ones around here, though. In fact, I saw a huge one on a newspaper
vending machine a few years ago, when I was still saving up to buy my
first DSLR and was really disappointed that I didn't have a camera with
me at the time. That's precisely what got me into the habit of taking a
camera with me just about every time I leave the house.

to change. Does it mean the future lenses should be designed in the

Precisely; it was a coincidence but the "old" lenses - the better ones
- are working quite well for digital sensors, because of this. With
the large focal range specific to a DSLR, using offset microlenses
would not be an option.
The telecentricity Olympus loudly promoted was a natural

I'm afraid it is; with no new FourThirds lenses since 2008, and the

Re: PESO: Mr. Moore and my Yamaha

2013-09-25 Thread Walt

Thanks a bunch, Dan.

Mr. Moore is one of those subjects I just feel compelled to photograph.
There's just a kind of inexplicable kinship there. He's become a good
friend over the past couple of years, and I always look forward to his
weekly visits to the club where I work -- every Sunday at 5:10. You can
set your watch by it.

Thank you very much, Frank!

I'd have to say it's among my very favorite shots I've taken at work. When I
finally get to the point of putting together a collection, this one will be
in it.

He'll probably be around quite a while longer, but when he does
eventually go, I'll be glad I have this photo to give to his family.

Comments are, as always, welcome.

Re: PESO: Pas de Deux

2013-09-25 Thread Walt

Thanks, Dan.

I suspect they lie in wait for ants. I stopped those from getting to the
feeder months ago with some petroleum jelly, but I wonder if they can
still detect the old pheromone trails.

That said, I have seen a photo of a particularly large mantis actually
killing a hummingbird -- though, these aren't anywhere near large enough
to pull that off.

Very interesting image, and a great story.

I wonder why they like the feeder so much. Do they try to drink the nectar?

They are fascinating creatures, aren't they? I could sit and watch them all
day if they didn't make me feel like they were going to come flying toward
my eyeball at any moment.

An interesting development occurred at the hummingbird feeder this
morning. I've been taking shots of a mantis that's been hanging out
there for the past several days. Then, late last night, I noticed there

were two of them there, but the light was so low I didn't even bother
to
grab the camera as focusing would have been out of the question. So, I
put it off hoping they might still be there this morning.

Well, they were. And it seems they've gotten one another's attention.
The one on the bottom actually struck out at the one on top before
scurrying back down to the bottom of the feeder. Unfortunately, I
wasn't
quick enough to capture it. But, I was pretty happy to get this shot
nonetheless.
