On 9/26/2013 10:11 PM, Larry Colen wrote: Why would I need AF? When it focuses on the right thing, AF can focus more precisely than manual. Indeed. When is an important word here. Why would Ricoh need AF on the mount? Because these days, to all intents and purposes you cannot sell a camera that isn't auto everything. That's correct. However, just like you have to master your MF camera and learn how to properly use the focus aids it has, you also have to learn the specifics, quirks and in general get used to the way your AF camera works. It is to say, that everything that is auto everything still requires human operator that understands how to use the automatics in the most advantageous way. Merely pointing and shooting won't cut it. That's why cell phones are being so popular - ultimate ps that is always with you. I don't know though in terms of business, agreements, royalties and patents, whether your idea would make sense to Ricoh business people. Neither do I, but I find the concept entertaining. Likewise I shot for about 35 years without autofocus, except on a pocket camera that I always carried with me in Singapore. One of the things that I needed to learn when I got back into photography a few years back was when to admit that the camera could do a better job than I. When it works, AF tends to be faster and more accurate than manual focus. Larry, pardon my being direct, but you're just one sample out of the great many. I find it very liberating to have to shoot with all things manual, except that when I set the aperture, camera sets the shutter speed and ISO, given the condition (set by me) that when shutter speed goes slower than 1/30 sec, it is time to up the ISO. And mind you, being now the only element to blame if anything goes wrong, it has very soothing effect too... I would not expect an M-K adapter to have a screw drive, but I thought that it could have contacts to control an SDM AF lens. Then, tell me, sir, how many people would actually buy such a thing? Look at K-01... No viewfinder, right? It took just a few months to make its price dive and then very soon thereafter it was discontinued... There are a lot of engineering reasons for a new mount to be a completely new mount, large enough in diameter and short enough in register so that anything could be adapted to it. I think that there is great deal more reasons (not only engineering) to come up with most basic adapter to support the older mount. Or to have no such adapter at all. FS Fryday: When owning too much glass is a problem
Amid a loud chorus of No!, here's my struggle. Glass takes up space. It's heavy to carry around. (Which is why I gave up 8x10 -- and THAT was difficult!) I have 3 zooms FA28-105, 18-55WR, and Sigma 70-300 And some primes FA35/2, FA28/2.8, F50/1.7, M*300/4, and the 70/2.4LTD Plus the F 1.7xTC Obviously there is some duplication here. The question is how to thin the herd? I'm thinking of parting with the lower 2 primes, the lower 2 zooms, and just getting the 16-50/2.8. Then I think -- these things will go through the roof when full frame comes out. (someday ...) I remember selling my F*300/4.5 a year before the DSLR came out. That was the dumbest thing I ever sold. What a lens! Problem is ... I have dreams of shooting professionally. But I really don't. I'm more thinking of giving up that fantasy and just enjoying the hobby. So after this thought experiment it comes down to this: FA28-105 - $80 18-55WR - $80 FA35/2 - $300 FA28/2.8 $250 M* 300/4 $200 F1.7x TC $300 And my Blad outfit -- 500C, black 80/2.8 T*, grip, two 120 backs, prism, filters, and even some film. $1000. That will leave me with the Sigma zoom, 50, 70, and I'll add a 16-50 with green left over. These are my pick of the first batch of shots with the K7. All with the FA 100-300. The Buffalo portraits are at about 20m. The Mopane scrub is about to lose its leaves. This is the Lowveld's equivalent of Autumn. The Saddlebill Stork is at about 300m. I didn't see the croc until I started cropping. Sept/Oct is bush fire time in Kruger. Some controlled burning is carried out to create firebreaks. The large aloes on this rocky outcrop about 800m away have survived. Part of a herd of elephants grazing in a wetland near a small stream. Follow-up on Sigma 400/5.6 APO from KEH
Short version: I have sent it back to KEH. Longer version: I kept thinking that the lens was too good for an Ugly rating, even by KEH. On about my fifth inspection, in just the right light, squinting my eyes and wrinkling my nose, I could see what looked like a faint haze on an interior lens surface. Careful cleaning of front and back lens surfaces, another look, and yes the haze is on the inside. I've seen lenses at various stages of fungal infection; this does not look like fungus to me. More likely a lubricant which has vaporized and then deposited on the lens element (a good reason not to leave lenses where they will get too hot!) The haze probably reduces the sharpness of the lens from what it was when new. But as you saw I got decent images nonetheless. So, it will probably be back up on KEH's virtual shelf soon. If you want a good-enough long lens to explore telephoto shooting, this may be a worthwhile gamble for you. Only testing an actual product can answer that question properly. I guess you want to debate the meaning of dead and buried. Not really, I'll replace dead and buried with being phased out if that makes you more comfortable. No one likes to be told he's using dead and buried things... It's a more realistic and objective statement. To me, dead and buried means the bodies that take a lens' mount are out of production, and the lens cannot be used on any other in-production body, with or without adapter, and provide the lens full functionality. ... Then, 4/3 lenses are dead and buried until they'll have a u4/3 body capable to focus them as fast as the E-5? :-p Regardless of the speed of the AF, all FT SLR lenses have autofocused with all Olympus mFT cameras from day one of the Pen E-P1. The E-M1 provides a better AF solution, that's all. You will never have auto-diaphragm operation with a Pentax DSLR using a Pentax M42 lens... That's a non-functional lens feature. It doesn't really matters if they still making lenses or they're NOS, that's temporary; the mount is being phased out. That's true, but does it matter? Isn't it nice that Olympus and Panasonic have provides a seamless upgrade path so owners can continue using their existing lenses? And now with native DSLR focusing performance? Re: PESO - Zoe (caution, feline content!)
Thanks, Mark! We owned a Tabby when I was a kid and I've always loved them. I was reading somewhere that tabbies are very close to what cats looked like before we domesticated them and started selectively breeding them. Makes sense; that coat would be amazing camouflage in a dark forest. I've also heard that Tabbies have a bit of the wild in them and Zoe is about the liveliest cat I've lived with. Thanks for the comment and thanks as well to everyone else who looked and commented. Much appreciated! Cheers, frank Mark C pdml-m...@charter.net wrote: Pretty cat, Frank! Classic tabby... Question re K-5ii controls
Short story: I haven't been able to find a way to use Mirror Lockup mode while also bracketing exposures. Am I missing something in one of the functions or options? Longer story: One of the things I learned during the workshop I attended in August is that I didn't know as much as I thought about the K-5. I knew of, e.g., exposure bracketing and had used that once or twice but didn't really know how to use it until I practiced a bit. Since then I have been slowly working my way back and forth in the manual, trying to become more familiar with the various functions and practicing to get more facile in using them. As I previsualize some shots I would like to take at an upcoming Fall Colors workshop (same venue, same instructors, different emphasis on the photo opportunities available), one combination of functions I would like to be able to use is bracketed exposure (for possible HDR processing). But I want to be able to use mirror-lockup (with remote) for many/most shots (for greater sharpness). And I haven't discovered any way to activate both the bracket and ML modes simultaneously. So, am I missing something? Or do I resign myself to manual ly adjusting the exposure to create the bracketed sequence? stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Right - which is the main reason I've not explored bracketing extensively before. Particularly doing a test shot and checking the histograms, it isn't that tough to have the proper exposure.
