That's some very clever out of the box thinking. I knew about the
McLaren F-duct which was leading to DRS used today by all teams. I'm
not so familiar with the regulations to say if it was cheating or not,
but I admire the engineers who came up with the idea.

Yours is uglier. LOL!

I am undecided about the very oof foliage at the right of the frame. Would a
slight crop to eliminate it ruin the balance of the photo? Could you (dare I

Otoh is it that much of a distraction? I just don't know.

 Refresher link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/10181475554/

Well, I finally got to attempt my first use of the freeware
DeepSkyStacker (version 3.3.3 beta 51) and with it I stacked the 11
good RAW images that I had taken that evening. Added together, they
represent a 6 minute integrated exposure time.

The latest versions of DSS also let you work with the histogram (in R,
G, B), luminance, and saturation, along with the curves. I then
applied a few Photoshop astrophotography-related actions and adjusted
the color-balance, which seemed a bit green to my eye. Here is the
 result:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/10299785464/

This is still not even doing everything right because I was working
with no dark frames, bias frames, or flats which would make for
an even better stacked image (especially where noise is concerned).
Still I'm pretty pleased with the result, for my maiden DSS voyage.

Re: 4 Pesos - cause I hadn't in a while

2013-11-16 Thread Ann Sanfedele
I have several calendars in my head swimming around... the abstracts,
another NYC calendar in color , West of the Divide (but that requires
mainly slide scanning) another cat calendar, a nyc black and white. and
I need to do ebay :-(

I have 6 to 8 of the found collages that were found recently.

One thing about a wall calendar as a display of art is that
they are not lined up on a wall - so if May and December were both, say
of very similar color or geometry the redundancy factor isn't so
important. And the purchaser of the calendar is only using one piece

of wall a year.

thanks for the props :-)

for a calendar there will be challenges, but challenges that can be over come
to be sure—especially with your capable eye!

They are amazing. And when they are feeding during their migration they will
let one get quite close. I guess they are so intent on refueling they need to
eat at all costs.

In my three and a half years here in New Toronto I've only experienced the full
migration once; I've missed it other years. They don't move at the same time
every year. Depends on the weather during the summer or something.

Anyway, three years ago was an awe-inspiring experience.

Thanks for the kind words and thanks to all who looked and commented.

I was only there at night once and I'll never forget it. When I was younger I

Your photo really evokes this feeling of awe I had when I was there 8 years ago.

There are noticeable jpeg artifacts around the edges of the clouds
caused by recompression after I upload the image. AFAIK all sites do
this and it rarely causes problems.

After some research and experimenting I found a way to get rid of
those ugly artifacts:

1.) Switch to Lab color mode.
2.) Make a selection around the areas with fine detail which will
cause problems after uploading.
3.) Select the a and b channels and apply blur. (I used Gaussian Blur,
but others might work as well).

The radius applied was a trial and error process and I re-uploaded the
photo many times. Since 500px doesn't allow re-uploading, I used 1x.
Here is the new version: http://1x.com/photo/371588/

I found that by blurring only the color components and not the
lightness channel I can retain detail and it helps to keep the
recompression process from messing up the image.

P.S. I'm now testing 1x.com so if you find any annoying behavior like

Honestly that is almost straight out of the camera, with no post
processing beyond whatever Lightroom does with no plug ins and a very
slight adjustment to the saturation and vibrance in Camera RAW.
This is one of thos cases where you could say I must have a good camera
