And it behaved itself very well, I'm happy to report. We all trouped down to the local park where we had a backdrop of lightly snow-covered leaves and brush. Besides carrying my 42 softbox umbrella around (with two AF540's inside for extra oomph), the challenge was keeping Gryphon the family's new Golden Retriever puppy interested in looking at the camera. :-) I was concerned that the batteries in either the flashes or the K-3 would pooch out early because of the cold (-6C with a -12C windchill), but they all held up just fine for the whole shoot. When I got back home I did have to leave the K-3 in its baggie to warm up for about two hours to reach room temp. I think all the metal in it is to blame for that. The patriarch is happy with the proofs I sent him (his wife hasn't double-checked them yet), and the images looked good to me too, so I think we have an overall win. I do need to learn much more about directing a group though. I had the best luck with the dog as I had a loud squeeky toy in my pocket to attract his nose in my direction. I need such a toy for teenaged boys too. No PESO/GESO, yet. Re: OT My photographic year
My Sigma 24-70/f2.8 came back repaired under warranty. I'm not sure if it was Sigma's warranty or warranty from the local store I bought it from. Either way, it was no hassle for me other than when I noticed it was broke not having it while it was away being repaired. I took my Tokina 28-70/f2.8 that was acting flaky (gave F-- readings on my K10D K20D) into the same local store to have their repair guy check it out. He couldn't find anything wrong with it, and so far it hasn't failed again since then. I'm figuring it's due to the perversity of the universe that it's only broke until you take it in to be repaired they can't find anything wrong. I've noticed that with cars before. That repair guy is the same one who kept my K1000 for about 16 months, but was finally able to get the shutter regulated working again. He decided not to charge me because it took so long. I'd have willingly paid. I love my K1000. Oh ... I went out to Arizona New Mexico last January and took a bunch of photos. The good thing is that I have been earning money (often too many hours) but also finding time to get out and shoot my Pentax kit at least locally. I've been venturing into exciting new territories for me, some of which I may be able to share next year. I do have to review my kit over the next year, the K5's are working for me but not as well as I imagine a set of K3 bodies might in the similar circumstances. Unfortunately there have been no notable deals on K3's in Oz (excepting a silver kit) and I don't expect discounting as the local currency is continually weakening, that said it may be a better time to sell some of my excess gear though I'm not remotely excited by the notion of the sales process. Because of my current living situation I tend to pack a a fairly robust photo-kit, basically I'm prepared for anything but in doing so I'm lugging about an almost 10kg pack virtually everywhere I go. It is wearing on me and those about me, so in an effort to keep the peace and get sensible again I finally bit the bullet and bought a point and shoot that will suffice in the 50% of situations where I really don't need a honking great DSLR. So tonight I get to test out my most loathed on this list brand of camera in low light at the local carols by candle-light with my now seven year old son. I might even post a GESO :) Seasons greeting to all and I hope to be list-lurking less next year. What is photographic art?
When a medium belongs exclusively to the artists then it remains an art form. But popularity, it seems, destroys art. (eg, the mobile went from an art form to a baby crib toy) Kodak is to blame for the change in photography and that was about a century ago. There is a remnant of photographic art. Some here do it quite well. Others of us just try hard. Art is more than the individualism of the eye of the beholder. Such pomo definitions destroy all meaning. GESO: Porcupine
Had some excitement in the garden this evening. Our Lab was barking madly at something in the undergrowth. There was a rattling sound (much like the rattlers I have seen on TV) - it turned out he had cornered a porcupine. They are not actually aggressive but present their rear end of sharp quills to any foe. Even Lions Leopards avoid them for fear of facial injuries. Having removed the Lab to safety, I grabbed my camera carefully took a few shots. Hopefully the porcupine will move on during the night. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wisselstroom/sets/72157638732821406/\ K7 with DA 18-55. Photography was allowed?just no flash. We had upper center seats, and all the shots were taken from my seat. All lights and sounds on the camera were turned off, and I only clicked the shutter when the music was loud. Darrel said he never heard the shutter once. I started out shooting at 4000 ISO, some at 5000 ISO, then dropped down to 640 for some slow shutter speeds. I shot about 120 frames, but these 6 are the best of the bunch. All are deep crops. I shot with the FA 50 f1.4, but I mainly shot at f2.8. I picked the third frame for my picture of the week because she?s my favorite dancer. Would have been interesting to shoot with the K-3; would have loved the improved low-light auto focus capabilities. Ensemble Espanol is in residence at Northeastern Illinois University. Re: The Death of Photography (again)
Thanks for that, John. I've been debating whether to jump in on the Auto-Tune issue, but since I've spent the last 15 years as the marketing guy for the company that invented and markets Auto-Tune, I was concerned that it might come off as a bit defensive. Suffice it to say that while it's largely come to popular attention outside the recording industry as a result of its use as an effect, first in pop music back in the the Cher Believe days, and more recently in hip hop (and then everything), for every song that you hear using it as an effect, there's probably a hundred more that use it for its initially intended purpose where its use is entirely inaudible. And I can tell you that it's *not* just for the vocally challenged. It's used by many extremely talented vocalists, some in musical genres far from pop music. (And as a bonus, it gave me the entirely unexpected opportunity to be quoted in New York Times responding to Jay-Z: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/30/when-jay-z-hates-your-software/?_r=0 ) - Marco On Dec 16, 2013, at 5:17 AM, John wrote: On 12/15/2013 3:19 AM, David Mann wrote: On Dec 15, 2013, at 6:13 am, Walt ldott...@gmail.com wrote: The arts in general are due for a reckoning of some sort. Dumb question/suggestion from a Mac guy: On a Mac, when you delete files they go into the Trash which is just another folder (directory) in the file system. They stay there and can be dragged back to your photo folder or wherever until you empty the Trash. I vaguely recall that Windows is similar. LIkewise, if I didn't transfer images to a different folder or load to smugmug, I lost all the photos between Feb142011 and february 26th, 2013 I wouldnt ahve written such detail here except I need to remember it.. So , is there any hope for recovery? I'm trying to convince myself that if I didnt send a file to smugmug it wasnt worth much, but I know I had a lot of stuff photographed that I intended to list for sale that was lost but I know I had some stuff that was kind important that didnt go to smugmug. Dumb question/suggestion from a Mac guy: On a Mac, when you delete files they go into the Trash which is just another folder (directory) in the file system. They stay there and can be dragged back to your photo folder or wherever until you empty the Trash. I vaguely recall that Windows is similar. I can't tell from your narrative whether you just Deleted the files, or if you also emptied the Trash? Stan On a local drive they go into the trash from which they may be recovered/restored. External drives force a permanent deletion. What remains is to undelete the files. I second Attila on this, don't try to write anything, and if asked for recovery in Windows don't accept it. (I.e. if you've just removed it from the USB port instead of removing it safely.) If possible I would suggest to not even connect the disk to the computer, and ask for someone very tech-savy to help you. (See the right procedure later in the email.) About the possibility of the files being in Recycled Bin I would say the following: * to my knowledge Windows XP doesn't use recycle for removable drives, which is the case with your external drive; * if the deletion was not instantaneous (i.e. under a second) then most certainly it wasn't moved there; The right procedure in such cases is the following: * make a byte-to-byte image of the disk (or partition); (this is done with specialized tools, not through Explorer;) * do any recovery attempts on the clone, thus allowing you to try other alternatives; I can't suggest any Windows application -- only for Linux, as I'm a Linux user for a lot of time -- but I could ask tomorrow my colleagues. Bottom-line: don't touch the drive unless you're certain about what you are doing (i.e. including consequences), and only after you've cooled-down. Unfortunately I'm of not much help, Ciprian. P.S.: Most recovery applications would write to the disk, thus I'm not sure it's a good idea to run them on the direct disk; P.P.S.: Do you remember the file-system type (i.e. NTFS / FAT)? The Recycle Bin can be configured independently for every hard drive. So the deleted files *may* be on her main system? I'm quoting and annotating the document that Attila was referring to: The Recycle Bin provides a safety net when deleting files or folders. When you delete any of these items from your hard disk, Windows places it in the Recycle Bin and the Recycle Bin icon changes from empty to full. Items deleted from a floppy disk or a network drive are permanently deleted and are not sent to the Recycle Bin. The key words are floppy disk or a network drive, which if I'm not mistake are what Windows XP thinks about removable drives (even if their underlaying technology is a rotating disk, flash drive, SSD, or plain old floppy). Fortunately the permanently deleted phrase is not almost always true, as the data still lingers on the drive for a while (i.e. until something else over-writes it.) Small detour: for SSD drives, or other types of hardware, supporting the `TRIM` (or was it `DISCARD`?) operation, and for those file-systems that support that operation (I know some only on Linux), this deletion becomes quite permanent for the usual user. (I.e. I'm certain that specialized people could get back the data, but only through specialized hardware and software.) Windows allocates one Recycle Bin for each partition or hard disk. If your hard disk is partitioned, or if you have more than one hard disk in your computer, you can specify a different size for each Recycle Bin. This means that for the deletion to `Recycle Bin`, Windows won't move your files from one disk to another. (I.e. if you delete your files and then format the disk, the `Recycle Bin` and its files on that disk also disappear.) It remains to each of us to decide whether something is art or not, but there are no hard and fast rules and we might come to different conclusions (this is why the eye of the beholder isn't a proper definition). Popularity doesn't destroy art unless your definition requires that art shouldn't be mainstream. To evoke in oneself a feeling one has once experienced, and having evoked it in oneself, then, by means of movements, lines, colors, sounds, or forms expressed in words, so to transmit that feeling that others may experience the same feeling — this is the activity of art. Art is a human activity consisting in this, that one man consciously, by means of certain external signs, hands on to others feelings he has lived through, and that other people are infected by these feelings and also experience them. (Leo Tolstoy) This is a good definition of the artistic process, describing the intention of the artist when he creates art. But will the same feelings be transmitted to the viewers is impossible to tell. As a rule DO NOT write anything on that drive until all your data is recovered. Not even as part of the recovery process, choose to recover your data on another drive. USB drives are not network drives, but you do have to watch out for the message such so is too large to fit in the recycle bin. Do you want to delete it permanently? (or some such). I think they may still be recoverable even then if you don't write anything else to the drive after choosing permanent deletion, but it's going to take some kind of un-delete/file recovery software to do so. On 12/16/2013 2:07 PM, Ciprian Dorin Craciun wrote: On Mon, Dec 16, 2013 at 8:54 PM, CollinB coll...@brendemuehl.net wrote: This seems to be a common misconception. (I.e. if you delete your files and then format the disk, the `Recycle Bin` and its files on that disk also disappear.) Question for those who had SDM or lens chip replaced
I have a question for those people who had SDM (or in general, lens chip) failed and replaced. I see that with one of the SDM lenses my K5 has the aperture and speed settings rapidly (as in crazily) fluctuating. (And the focus shows MF, regardless of the focus selector position.) I was wondering if this is one of the symptoms of the failed chip or that could be for a different reason. When I had a previous chip failure, I didn't see anything like this. When the chip failed in your lens, did you see this type of a fluctuation? I wonder if could be something else that happened to the lens. Re: Question for those who had SDM or lens chip replaced
I know you probably have, but I have to ask: did you clean the contacts well? Correct me if I'm wrong but aperture is read by passing current through the lens mount and the A pin. Oh wait. Digital lens. Hmm, maybe the aperture is controlled with the chip. I only have screw mount lenses, but getting a few DA lenses wet (and I mean soaked) resulted in MF only first and then eventually loss of aperture control. the MF only is telling. Sounds like you have a bad chip or a bad connection. I meant to say screw drive lenses, though I do have a few screw mounts as well. :) On Mon, Dec 16, 2013 at 7:02 PM, Zos Xavius zosxav...@gmail.com wrote: I know you probably have, but I have to ask: did you clean the contacts well? When the chip failed in your lens, did you see this type of a fluctuation? My SDM failure was a motor, as in it wouldn't focus automatically. It was the 16-50mm DA*. Re: Question for those who had SDM or lens chip replaced
My DA* 50-135 stopped focusing, but I didn't notice any other problems like you describe. Pentax has since replaced the motor, and I also have a new circuit board. It works nicely, though I still have to run it through more rigorous paces--this weekend hopefully. My continuing abusive relationship with the Pentax F 70-210mm
I'm not sure who's abusing whom at this point. I took the K20D with FA 20-35mm and F 70-210mm out for a jaunt, didn't actually take any photos. I'll preface this by saying that both lenses seemed to be working flawlessly mechanically. Got back with out inspiration striking. When putting the F 70-210 back on the shelf I once again checked out all functions, aperture ring is as good as ever aperture snappy, zoom ring smooth, focus ring... Focus ring is jammed solid on infinity. I never even took the lens out of the bag. Sheesh. Luckily I have the Vivitar 70-210 S1 as a backup, but this is bloody annoying. -- A newspaper is a device for making the ignorant more ignorant, and the crazy, crazier. - H.L.Mencken -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: I have to scream now... techno-trouble here
No that would depend. If the entire file structure was deleted, say a directory and all sub directories, then the entire directory would be marked as deleted if it were larger than the space allocated for the recycle bin. I expect that Ann's photo directory is larger than that space... Re: I have to scream now... techno-trouble here
Ann, if you defragged the disk, the files are now pretty much unrecoverable. While some of the space used by the files may not have been overwritten, the directory structures have all been rewritten. Anything left will most likely be recoverable only as fragments. On 12/16/2013 7:30 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: thanks for all your input guys, Attila you were most helpful...
