Re: PESO - A Few Favorites

2014-03-09 Thread David Mann
That's nice. I'm not much of a reader myself but I do like old books.

My wife recently had the opportunity to go through some boxes of her
grandparents' old books and took a few home despite my protestations about her
having too many books and not enough shelving.

To shut me up, in one of the boxes she found autobiographies of Murray Halberg
and Peter Snell. They're two of NZ's most famous track runners who each won a
gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics. They trained under the great Arthur
Lydiard who revolutionised coaching methods.

The books were published in 1963 and 1965 respectively so they were still quite
young at the time. Some of the little things are very interesting, like how
they travelled overseas. Air travel in the 50s was not what it is today.

I've almost finished Halberg's book, Snell's is next :) I don't know where
I'll find the shelf space to put them yet...

Cheers,
Dave

We call it "hard fill" or "clean fill". It's pretty cheap to dispose of here
because it's recycled into new construction materials. As such a number of
roading and concrete companies, along with some quarries, are approved as
disposal sites. The port is also approved as they have a big land reclamation
project on-the-go. I think they got into some hot water over using earthquake
rubble early on, but I don't remember why.

The cost of disposal goes up by almost an order of magnitude if it's suspected
of containing asbestos. And a lot of old buildings contain asbestos in some
very interesting places. Contractors are putting a lot of effort into finding
and removing the stuff before demolition or repair work begins. It's affecting
a lot of domestic repairs as well.

Dave

Depends on the clock and how it's broken, actually. A broken LCD or LED

Plutarch, as translated by Langhorne.

In later years, my mother gave me some of the other treasures that Frank had
found in London. All were printed between 1860 and 1905. They share the top

Freneau poetry. Freneau was a poet of the American revolution, who isn’t widely
read these days and his work isn’t highly regarded by scholars, but there was a
personal connection: in the 1980s I lived just down the road from Freneau’s

Re: OT: Suggestions for Anti-virus software?

2014-03-09 Thread John

That gets the "Quick Start Guide" which is a little more readable.

I'm reading the little book that came along with the "Quick Start Guide".

It says "Mac mini" and "Important Product Information Guide" on the
front. It's about 3-3/4 inches by 4-7/8 inches. The paragraph headings
are printed in a bold 4 point font, and the actual text is just a bit
smaller.

Proper handling, understanding ergonomics, AppleCare Service and
Support, Regulatory Compliance Information, ...

It's readable with the loupe I use for inspecting transparencies.

i assume you mean the brief little document that came with the computer;
if so you might find the online version more readable:

i have heard good things about ClamXav; installed it once years ago, but
have not used it recently

the only things i have to add to Bruce's suggestions are

1) keep your OS up-to-date (esp. after the "go to fail" debacle)

2) use Little Snitch (sort of a reverse firewall), which will help you
allow the authentications your software may require, but monitor (and
optionally disable) other attempts by software to "phone home"; Little
Snitch takes some attention and some understanding of how computers make
network connections

3) don't install Flash, and use Adobe Reader only when Preview can't
handle a PDF (if you need Flash, install Chrome, which includes a
sandboxed version)

So, before I take the plunge & plug it in, I'd like suggestions for
anti-virus software for the Mac.

Try this: http://clamxav.com/

FWIW to you, I don't use any AV software on Mac OS X and never have. I
am a veteran of both Mac OS X and antivirus technology, having been
the principal architect of a corporate network messaging security
product for a firewall company (Borderware). I have used Mac OS X from
when it was NeXTSTEP and then OpenStep. The security model is UNIX's;
clean, understandable, robust and time-proven.

You should enable the Mac's firewall for extra protection, especially
if you don't trust your network router's firewall. Go to System
Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Firewall

Also see:
https://www.apple.com/osx/what-is/security.html

Also, do Macs have a "hosts" file?

On Windoze, I use a robust "hosts" file to block unwanted SPAM & Malware
sites.

Yes: /etc/hosts

John, how familiar are you with UNIX, Linux and/or FreeBSD? If you are
a UNIX person, you can get very far by assuming UNIX behaviour for
things like networking and general OS questions. So your hosts text
file is /etc/hosts just like it's been since the Berkeley days.

You should get familiar with /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
which is a terrific straightforward command line environment. The
default shell is /bin/bash.

See:
http://www.mactip.net/how-to-edit-the-hosts-file-on-a-mac/

You can use vi/vim to edit if you prefer.

Keep in mind that Mac OS X is a significantly evolved UNIX. The order
of name lookups and what sources to consult (eg BIND/named) are
controlled by a network services daemon.

Read this as it may save you a bunch of annoyance:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6841421/mac-osx-lion-dns-lookup-order

I took several community college classes on Unix System V back in the
late 80s & 90s. I haven't really used any of it since the mid-90s. I've
still got the textbooks.

I remember the bash shell; barely remember.

I've also installed several flavors of Linux on PC hardware at one time
or another, mostly from those "Teach Yourself ... in 30 Days" type
books. Linux was a plaything that I never really had enough time to
actually play with.

They never lasted long because the actual WORK that I needed to do on a
PC always required applications that would run in DOS, Windoze (and for
a while OS/2) and I'd end up having to use the hardware for something else.

The "hosts" file I use in windoze is just a long list of domains I never
want the computer to go to, so they're all referenced to 127.0.0.1 to
keep the computer from looking for them anywhere else.

I'm pretty sure that's something Windoze got from Unix, so I'm expecting
it to do the same thing on a Mac since it's Unix based.

I’ve got the K-5 II, and am often surprised at how annoyed I am by its
shortcomings. It has sensor performance that is the stuff of science fiction.
It has the best low light autofocus of any camera I’ve ever owned, better than
the K-5 which was better than the D600. But because it can’t focus quickly on
moving targets at 2EV or darker, and because it gets rather noisy over ISO
8000, I find myself grumbling.

I was considering this lens for a while but decided to stick with my FA 31 LTD
after comparing reviews of the Sigma with reviews of the FA 31 LTD. I’d be
interested in hearing comments from anyone who has shot both of them, though.

So, before I take the plunge & plug it in, I'd like suggestions for anti-virus

the only things i have to add to Bruce's suggestions are

1) keep your OS up-to-date (esp. after the "go to fail" debacle)

2) use Little Snitch (sort of a reverse firewall), which will help you allow
the authentications your software may require, but monitor (and optionally
disable) other attempts by software to "phone home"; Little Snitch takes some
attention and some understanding of how computers make network connections

3) don't install Flash, and use Adobe Reader only when Preview can't handle a
PDF (if you need Flash, install Chrome, which includes a sandboxed version)

PESO - A Few Favorites

2014-03-09 Thread Paul Stenquist
The upper shelf of my living room bookcase, far right side, holds some of my
favorite volumes. All invoke memories of my uncle, Frank Oswald, who died of
cancer way before his time, almost 40 years ago. Uncle Frank was a lover of
books and I always looked forward to the volumes he would choose for me at
Christmas and on my birthday.

Frank had fought in World War Ii and was stationed in London toward the end of
the war. While there, he bought a number of nineteenth century volumes at a
London used-book store. A few years before he died, when I was working on my
M.A. in English Lit at the University of Chicago, he bought me the New Temple
Shakespeare volumes. Published by J.M. Dent of London in 1935 and edited by
M.R. Ridley, the New Temple Shakespeare includes scholarly annotation and a
glossary of Elizabethan English. And they’re beautifully printed on fine
paper. Knowing that Plutarch’s Lives — the source of some Shakespearian plots
-- is central to the study of the bard, Frank also gave me his 1864 volume of
Plutarch, as translated by Langhorne.

In later years, my mother gave me some of the other treasures that Frank had
found in London. All were printed between 1860 and 1905. They share the top
shelf with Langhorne, Plutarch and Will. Among them is a volume of Philip
Freneau poetry. Freneau was a poet of the American revolution, who isn’t widely
read these days and his work isn’t highly regarded by scholars, but there was a
personal connection: in the 1980s I lived just down the road from Freneau’s
birthplace. This collection was printed in London in 1861, but it can’t be read
in full, because the folios were never cut apart, so only two of every four
pages can be read.

DST and O-GPS

I’ve been bitten by this before. When I set up my K-5 to update the time from
GPS, and it sets it to non-DST.
I tried looking in the manual for the Daylight Savings Time setting, but it

What you need to do is go into world time, then go into the city and enable, or
disable DST there.

It’s one of those annoyances that bites me when I’m using two cameras, and one

Try this: http://clamxav.com/

FWIW to you, I don't use any AV software on Mac OS X and never have. I
am a veteran of both Mac OS X and antivirus technology, having been
the principal architect of a corporate network messaging security
product for a firewall company (Borderware). I have used Mac OS X from
when it was NeXTSTEP and then OpenStep. The security model is UNIX's;
clean, understandable, robust and time-proven.

You should enable the Mac's firewall for extra protection, especially
if you don't trust your network router's firewall. Go to System
Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Firewall

Also see:
https://www.apple.com/osx/what-is/security.html

> Also, do Macs have a "hosts" file?

That's half-true, but I don't remember the details. That is, OSX is
built on a Unix foundation and therefore has /etc/hosts, but Apple must
be Different and has a bunch of unique/non-standard mechansisms for
handling networking and host lookup.

Some quacking should help you find more info.

Re: Beach bike bomb-blast breasts showing building site Bob's barrack

2014-03-09 Thread Alan C
Thanks for the history lesson, Bob. Very interesting. My wife's cousin & her
husband used to own "The Pointer School" in Blackheath so we were fortunate
to spend some time in the area. I understand that the open area of
Blackheath is actually an informal cemetery from the days of the plague
which is why no construction has ever taken place.

Yes, when I moved here 20 years ago it was all rather a lovely forgotten

foul-smelling starch refinery and a lovely old boat repair yard. The boat
repair yard is still here but will be moved downstream to make way for the
liner terminal and for blocks of flats.

Someone will be making a fortune. I didn't realise Blackheath actually
extended all the way to the Thames. You'd think the part by the river
would have a different name.

It does - it's Greenwich.

Greenwich as a historical settlement is much older than Blackheath, going
back at least to the Bronze age. The name Greenwich is Saxon, but the park
contains burial mounds that are thought to be early Bronze Age, and which
the Anglo-saxons reused. There are also Roman buildings and the settlement
is well attested at that time, not least because the Romans built a road
through the park (they'd never get planning permission these days). There's
a coaching inn called the Spread Eagle at the point where the road meets the
riverside; pubs with Eagle in the name are supposedly, perhaps apocryphally,
indicative of where the legions planted their standards and set up a
barracks.

Greenwich Park used to be part of Blackheath until Henry VIII enclosed it,
so in that sense Blackheath does extend to the river, but the bit where I
live was marshland until the late 19th century. Endersby's Wharf, which is
where the beach and the cruise terminal are, have been industrial wharves
for centuries. One of the buildings not being demolished is Endersby house,
which is name-checked in Moby Dick. Endersby Wharf was a whaling station,
and the name features in place-names in Antarctica and other whaling parts
of the world.

A lot of the buildings being demolished are not that old judging by the
concrete. What will they do with all that rubble?

Just a few yards downstream from Enderby Wharf is Ballast Wharf. Gravel used
to be extracted from Blackheath and loaded onto ships as ballast. There is
still a lot of activity there now off-loading various grades of gravel and
rock from ships, presumably to be trucked into parts of London where it's
needed. My guess is that much of that rubble will be taken by barge to
landfill, to reclaiming land, and to be recycled as building material or
ballast. A friend of mine who's a structural engineer and worked on the
emergency response to the Haiti earthquake told me that it was a big problem
for them to dispose of the rubble, which they eventually decided to use to
extend the island.

London had similar problems after the blitz; much of that rubble was used to
fill in the old gravel works on Blackheath. What goes around comes around.

It's been a lovely warm spring day today here in Olde Londonville, so I
had

a nice walk along the river near my house. Here, by way of contrast with
Frank's ice-bikers, is Mr. Sandman:

and you won't be able to cycle on the beach anymore. There won't be a

reading the manual ... gives a whole new meaning to "fine print".)

Anyway, I "know" Macs aren't supposed to get viruses, but I'd rather
be safe than sorry.

So, before I take the plunge & plug it in, I'd like suggestions for
anti-virus software for the Mac.

Also, do Macs have a "hosts" file?

On Windoze, I use a robust "hosts" file to block unwanted SPAM &
Malware sites.
