I was all ready to take a clichéd shot of a butterfly sunning itself but I
came too close and scared it off. It landed on the lemon tree in a very
inconvenient place but I managed to get this photo through the leaves. I've
cropped it a bit from the original.

I recommend you to download the demo of that and a couple of others,
eg Imagenomic Noiseware, and test on your material for yourself. I
have three NR packages that I use now: Lightroom (ACR), Imagenomic
Noiseware, and Nik Dfine. They all act differently on different kinds
of noise, so I pick and choose depending.

I don't have experience with Topaz other than running its demo back
when I chose Noiseware. I didn't like its UI then.

Personally, I'd recommend you to save up for the Nik Suite. It's $149
but it's a killer bunch of plugins and if you use the RAW Sharpener
before applying the NR (Dfine) you avoid much of the softening that NR
usually creates.

Red face time...

Never mind: I just saved you forty bucks. :-)

I already have the Nik Suite but I use it almost exclusively for the Silver
Efex component - never even realised that Define was a NR component

The recommended workflow is apply RAW pre-sharpener (tick the High ISO
selector if above ISO 400 so it avoids oversharpening noise), then run
Dfine on the result. Sometimes the Dfine automatic noise detect fails
and you have to manually point it at 4-5 different sample areas. Maybe
once in 100 images.

I'll probably still download the Topaz software to compare it with Define.

Nik Dfine is so good that I'd just not bother with Topaz myself. It
seems to handle sensor banding in extremely high-ISO shots really
well. Those ones where it was the "set it to 512,000 or miss the shot"
sort of thing. It can't perform miracles, but it pulls a perfectly
useable image out of the mud.

I don't think many places are getting this level of treatment. In areas
where the ground is bad, the government have "red-zoned" them and paid the
owners to move on. But this is one house among a good area. This one must

I love Central Camera on Wabash and always try to stop in there when
downtown. A few years ago I had memorable conversation with the owner
who talked about the great history of the shop in his family over the

years, they don't have much to offer.

I have an old photo (2006 - very high contrast) and comments about
Central Camera on my ancient static website:

With Calumet going out of business and the shelves not looking so good at

I quite like that composition. Unusual in that the poppies aren't
filling the frame but are balanced by some lovely wood textures. Well

Another vote for Atlex...I know you've been using Epson paper, but check
out Red River Paper if you get a chance. They offer a wide variety of
comparable paper, excellent customer service and lots of good printing

multitude of printers.

Wow. Truly bad news.

While downtown the other day, I stopped at the independently owned Central Camera
on Wabash ave to get a set of printer ink for the R2880 and some 13 x 19 inch
Velvet Fine Art paper. Shockingly, Central Camera and absolutely no ink to sell
for the R2880—none—zippo, and the bins for ink cartridges for other printer types
were also utterly empty. No Velvet Fine Art paper was to be found as well. It
seemed so odd, and I facetiously said, “are you going out of business,” and the guy
said no—just out. So I placed my order with B&H photo and should get it next
week.

With Calumet going out of business and the shelves not looking so good at
Central Camera, it will be tough for photographers in Chicago in future.

Cheers, Christine

Poppy Shed

2014-03-13 Thread Jack Davis

On this glorious 77 F day, my wife and I went on a flower hunt. Found what we
had really been looking for; Poppies.
Pleased to find them along the foundation of a weathering shed not too far from
the road.
I did no fiddling with the shed color. Love how it came out. I could see a hint
of this tone, but the amount surprised me. What I did do was set about 3/4 stop
minus compensation so as not to have the poppies render overly light. Shot at
f13 and with the sensor on "Sel", moved down on the grass in the center of the
poppies.

Re: PESO: New Foundations

I still have painful memories of installing underfloor insulation in my house.
It's amazing the amount of crap the builders left down there, mostly broken
bits of roof tiles. They didn't bother to clean it up before putting the
floorboards in.

Oh yeah and I insulated the hot water pipes as well. That's probably the best
thing I've done with the house. Very simple to do and makes a huge difference.

2014-03-13 Thread Christine Aguila
Wow. Truly bad news.

While downtown the other day, I stopped at the independently owned Central
Camera on Wabash ave to get a set of printer ink for the R2880 and some 13 x 19
inch Velvet Fine Art paper. Shockingly, Central Camera and absolutely no ink
to sell for the R2880—none—zippo, and the bins for ink cartridges for other
printer types were also utterly empty. No Velvet Fine Art paper was to be
found as well. It seemed so odd, and I facetiously said, “are you going out of
business,” and the guy said no—just out. So I placed my order with B&H photo
and should get it next week.

With Calumet going out of business and the shelves not looking so good at
Central Camera, it will be tough for photographers in Chicago in future.

Cheers, Christine

Yes they are embedded. I don't see an awful lot of moisture getting into that
wood though. Usually slab foundations have a moisture barrier underneath, and
there will be a house on top to keep the rain out.

Anyway I'm sure they know a lot more about this than I do... but then I might
have thought the same about the cheapskate developers who built houses with
unreinforced foundations on dodgy land out east. They laughed all the way to
the bank, leaving the residents / government to pick up the pieces.

I don't think many places are getting this level of treatment. In areas where
the ground is bad, the government have "red-zoned" them and paid the owners to
move on. But this is one house among a good area. This one must have been

Thanks Frank, also Bruce, Gerrit and everyone who looked.

It was my first shoot with my gridded softbox. I made the mistake of rotating

It is a Lotus Elite. I was having lunch with a friend breakin in the motor
on her E-type, so I thought she needed to swing by Canepa to see the pretty
toys. I'm embarassed that I didn't realize that it was an Elite on my

They were my college housemate's favorite car. It has a fiberglass

on it are good enough that it gets IIRC 30MPG, while cruising at 100MPH.

My plan for the Mac mini is to minimize the amount of internet I do on
it. I have this computer for internet.

I do know that I'll have to use the internet to download the various
music software that "came with" the recording package.

Only one of the programs came on physical media - a USB key. It also
requires a different USB key to be plugged in when the program is used.

The rest of the software came as printed cards that give the website &
an authentication key so you can download it. I don't think "Safari's
voracious appetite" will be a problem.

I finally moved over to my Windoze internet computer and used it to
register with the site and then went back to the Mac mini to log in and
download the app that makes the 8GB USB stick boot device. Still not
exactly sure what I need the USB stick boot device for, but I've got it

I got errors saying I had to enable Javascript to register. Does
Safari not have Javascript? I couldn't find anything useful in the

Safari has JavaScript, and normally it's on, so i suspect you somehow
turned it off; the tonymac86 registration page uses JavaScript for a

i'd just turn JavaScript back on; preferences for most applications
are in the "application" menu, which is on the left next to the Apple

I don't know how I would have turned it off. I didn't change any

The only things I've changed so far are the sleep time out & which way
the scroll wheel on the mouse works (so it would scroll the same way I'm
used to on Windoze).

I haven't installed a hosts file on the Mac mini yet. Nor an anti-virus
program. Figured I'd take care of the necessary Apple updates first.

I could see the captcha & when I clicked the "get a new challenge"
button it changed the captcha. So JavaScript must have been working.
Don't know why the error then, but I found a work around.

I've made a note to look at Safari's preferences.

Great stuff! Surprised to see the cock was on a woman's arm. And as for the
well-hung man, I can see that he's a real swinger. In fact they both are.

Wondeful lighting, just terrific photos.

What's the car in there? Is that an Elise? I'm guessing early sixties pre-Élan?
It's gorgeous!

Email headers can be spoofed to greater or lesser extents. Just because
your email client says it comes from the PDML doesn't make it so.
Sometimes it's just a surface spoof, sometimes the deception goes pretty
deep. But anyone who's accidentally sent an HTML message to the PDML
knows exactly what happens to an email with an attachment.

Scott,

It appears that either your e-mail account @rocketmail.com

channel
spam through it to all the people whose address appears in your

PDMLers: you may want to avoid clicking on the link(s) that appear

I am not sure if he is currently reading the list, so, if

None of the 28,572 PDML threads in my Gmail archive, going back to
1/2008, included attachments. (There are two messages in those threads
with attachments, but they were off-list replies to discussions that
started on the list.) So if it allowed attachments at some point, I'm
pretty sure it was a long time ago.
