Re: OT: Another XP doomsday thread ... and other stuff.

2014-04-11 Thread Paul
Residual voltages will do strange things sometimes and completely
unplugging everything and letting it sit can sometimes solve the problem.

At the outset of a printing project that was time sensitive my printer
insisted on going through a complete cleaning cycle before every print.
Cost me a full set ($100+) of ink cartridges. I tried the usual
"unplug for 30-60 seconds" and nothing changed. The printer service
center told me it was a motherboard problem and I might as well buy a
new printer as the cost for the replacement motherboard was about the
same. Finally unplugged it and left it for the better part of the day
before I plugged it back in. That's about 10 months ago...so far so good.

The only things plugged in to the UPS were the System Unit & wall wart
for an ethernet hub in the back room.

Since doing that, I've had no further problems with random shutdowns.

I changed the low battery & critical battery from "sleep" to "shut down".

I was in the middle of checking other settings when it suddenly gave me
a blank desktop, then "Logging Off" and the system shuts off.

I powered it back up and checked the UPS Monitor. It showed AC power
within range (118VAC - 120VAC), battery charge 100% and the system using
2% of the available power from the UPS. The power management battery
icon showed 100% battery.

It stayed up for less than 5 minutes & did it to me again. I think it's
going to have to go to the shop.

To top it all off, Thunderbird just started acting stupid.

so I try to minimize that by keeping my computers powered up all the

My computer keeps shutting down. When I restart it, I get a message
telling me the battery reached its critical limit and windows saved
itself to disk. It's acting like a laptop that's been left unplugged.

I don't understand this. It's a "desktop" system plugged into a 2000VA
UPS (online double-conversion) and I haven't had a power failure that
lasted more than an eye-blink for months & months & months (since
before
I built this system). I do have the UPS monitoring software
installed on
the system, but according to the log files that's not what is shutting
it down.

The UPS is less than 2 years old, and I have verified that the
batteries
inside it are good. They're still under warranty.

Google hasn't been much help. I did find one article that suggested
turning power management off, which I did, but that hasn't helped. I
still don't know where it thinks it's getting this low battery signal
from?

Thanks.

That tells me the problem is here in NC. Time Warner doesn't seem to have a

problem maps are showing outages in Raleigh & Charlotte.

It also seems to be intermittent with the server coming up occasionally.

Thoughts on the K-5II

2014-04-11 Thread P.J. Alling
Well, I've been playing with the K-5II for about three weeks now, mostly
familiarizing myself with the control interface. I keep starting to
write a long post about it but a.) it's boring and b.) the K-5II is old
news.

So I'll keep this short and sweet.

Pentax auto focus is finally worthy of the name.

Holly Crap! I can take acceptable shots at Crazy high ISOs the damned
thing can see in the dark.

I like the locking mode dial, unlike the K20D I know the mode it was in
when I bagged it will still be set next time I put it to my eye.

I still think it needs a dedicated switch to turn SR on and off, but the
quick menu using the info button is a pretty good solution.

About some of the info screen quick options, if you shoot raw about 1/4
of them are useless, how about the ability to program those fictions to
something useful when shooting raw?

Programming the AF button, ON or OFF??? even the K20D gave more options
than that.

The OK button does way to many things.

%*^$*$, I keep hitting the exposure compensation button when I want to
hit the green button and the green button when I want exposure
compensation. I see no particular reason for this change except the
exposure compensation button is now where certain Nikon models put it.

Consistency what consistency, why does the exposure compensation button
toggle that mode off and on, while the ISO button have to held down when
changing ISO. Is it so hard to hold the compensation button down?

Really those are niggles, but annoying niggles.

Now I need a split image range finder screen for my manual focus lenses,
and to decide on a couple of spare batteries, because they take a long
time to charge.

In short the camera turns out high quality image files and feels like
quality equipment in the hand. I haven't been this happy with a camera
since I picked up my first LX.

(on-list since the general answer could be helpful to others)

how to filter your email into different folders, or mailboxes, depends on your
provider and what you use to read your email; your specific provider may have
filters that can be applied at the server side, which is the only way to do it
for webmail and for most smartphone or tablet apps; to set up such filters
you'll need to find your provider's help files, or just take a stab at finding
the tools in the web interface

if you read email via a desktop app, server-side filters work well for IMAP,
but less so for POP; most desktop apps also have their own filtering tools, but
the instructions depend on the app

in most cases the word "filter" is used, so you can hunt for that in the
interface or use that word in a google search, e.g. "comcast webmail filters"

Nice action portrait. The hand seems to indicate he is commenting. Colorful
strip across the top might be cropped, being careful not to let the top edge
get uncomfortably close to his head. Might be a combination of cropping and
some cloning of a portion of the left half so as not to crowed his head.
Then, for balance, the bottom should be cropped by whatever feels comfortable.
Certainly worth the effort.
