I have a similar but mirrored problem. After unplugging a USB drive
from my Linux box without ejecting or unmounting it, due to some
glitch preventing me doing it properly, the drive is now not
recognised by Linux. I can't remember the glitch precisely but it did
involve a freeze. Taking it to work to try a reformat on Windows, I
find it is recognised and all data present and correct. Different
Linux machines - not recognised. Windows machines - fine.

It's a paradox my skill level is unable to unravel but, by default, I
blame Adobe.

Interesting, down here we'd keep the same PIN as we choose it ourselves. We'd

lights) while preparing lighting setups for an upcoming shoot (and I'm
sick of shooting my mannequin). So, may I present ...

Self-portrait with bowler and Bitchcraft t-shirt
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/bruce_m_walker/13856334894/

K-3, DA* 16-50/2.8 @ 45mm/f:6.3, 1/125th sec, ISO 200; on tripod, IR
remote.
Key light: AF540FGZ @ 1/64th power, with a Honl 1/8" Speed Grid, camera
right.

Background: two Neewer TT560 in Westcott Strip boxes, L & R.
FleaBay radio triggers.
Lr, Ps, Nik Analog Efex.

Note for Larry or anyone else who needs to do lighting in a confined
space: seriously consider the Westcott Apollo Strip Box with its
matching 40 degree strip grid. It is totally worth the moola. Colour
me _very_ impressed with them. I just bought two, and I've been
testing a variety of tricky lighting patterns in my confined office
space (converted bedroom). The light output is soft but narrow (16" x
30") and so well directed coming out of the box you'll think it was
collimated like a laser beam. I have been able to locate these boxes
directly behind an object to light its background leaving the object
completely in silhouette. All you need is some black foamcore sheets
to eliminate stray reflections and you can do chiaroscuro like a
champ. They are perfect for hair lights or split lighting.

Because they have two sets of zippers to allow lightstand access to
the interior -- for vert or horiz orientation -- you can also use the
spare zippered opening to get at the controls of the flash and
trigger. That's harder to do with the other Apollo models with their
single set of zippers.

I bought 'em from B&H Photo and they arrived by UPS in a few days (and
cheaper than I could get 'em locally in Toronto!).

Assuming that you are getting what we had in Nebraska on Sunday, which
was our worst weather of the whole winter (except, of course, we are
now over 3 weeks into Spring).
We started with thunder & rain, then freezing rain, then a mix that
accumulated into drifts of slush, then sleet and finally snow. Lots
and lots of snow driven sideways by 45 mph winds (for about the next 5
hours).

It's that nice heavy concrete to shove/L. The heart-attack inducing
kind. The only good thing about April snow is knowing that it will be
gone in a day or two.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the 17-70. My sample of the lens

Im going to assume this is not normal or is the norm for SDM

Thanks, Ann and Bruce.

I have hairy arms, but not that hairy. This is the fur on my
dog's back. Malamutes have a double coat. The undercoat is soft and
thick and wooly, usually white, and up to 2 inches thick. It provides
insulation from the cold. The guard coat is coarse, and stands out
from the body, and it protects rain and snow and ice from getting down
to the insulation layer.

Odd Computer Problem

2014-04-14 Thread Mark C
Yesterday I was backing up my main PC (Windows 7) onto a USB drive. By
'backing up' I mean I was using MS SynchToy to synchronize a few folders
form the PC to those on the drive. The copy operation just froze, though
the computer ran fine. I disconnected and reconnected the drive, and
got a "USB Device Not Recognized Error" - and then the mouse and
keyboard stopped working. Disconnected the drive, powered off the PC,
powered up - it seemed to boot butthe screen was blank. Tried several
times - no audible post error codes, just a blank screen. I plugged the
the USB drive into the Linux (Lubuntu) machine and it worked perfectly.
OK - I figured the video card on the WIn& machine had died and someone
screwed up the USB on its way out (hey - to my mind that makes sense)

Several hours later and and after a lot of re-booting with no change to
the screen, I decided to disconnect the monitor and pull the video card,
planning to replace it today. I unpluged one monitor and on a whim hit
the power button - it booted fine, screen and all. Put on the second
montior, all was back to normal. The monitor cables were screwed in
tight - but unplugging one of them resolved the issue.

Great - let's get back to backing up. Plugged in the USB drive and the
led on the drive started flickering and flashing like crazy. The
computer did not recognize the drive at all. Tried a few more times and
got a couple of USB Device Not Recognized errors that locked up the
computer.

I booted the second machine into WIndows XP and found that the drive
worked, but very slowly - took 15-20 minutes to show up and then just
crawled. I figured the drive is toast. But then tonight I tried it again
in Linux. Worked just like normal. I copied the data on the drive to the
LInux machine - from my spot checks and looking at the the file sizes,
it seems to have copied over fine. From what I can see it is
uncorrupted and the copy was a fast as normal.

I booted the LInux / WinXP machine back into XP and again the drive is
running super slow. I started a command line chkdsk /r 3 hours ago and
it is 50% through step 4 - verifying file data.

Given that this works fine in linux but not windows - do you think that
might mean that the USB housing is defective and for some reason the
Linux USB drivers can somehow deal with it? If so - I could get a new
enclosure and move the drive. And why would a USB failure cause the
screen on the Win& PC to go blank and stay that until one monitor was
unplugged? Or is that just wicked coincidence?

PESO Me, in a bowler and T

2014-04-14 Thread Bruce Walker
Now for something unique: a self-portrait. I have done few of these,
but I felt it was time to refresh my profile mugshots and also I am
testing out some new light modifier enablement (ie gridded strip
lights) while preparing lighting setups for an upcoming shoot (and I'm
sick of shooting my mannequin). So, may I present ...

Self-portrait with bowler and Bitchcraft t-shirt
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/bruce_m_walker/13856334894/

K-3, DA* 16-50/2.8 @ 45mm/f:6.3, 1/125th sec, ISO 200; on tripod, IR remote.
Key light: AF540FGZ @ 1/64th power, with a Honl 1/8" Speed Grid, camera right.

So, how many cards have you had to cancel? You'll have to learn new PIN
codes...

I've recently had my wallet stolen from my car, literally under my nose.
Some tw@t knocked on the window on my side to tell me I had a problem
with my car and got me to get out and look while his mate stole the
wallet from between the front seats by opening the passenger-side rear door.

Their booty: two Mastercards and two bank cards, ID-card, car's papers,
driving license, amateur radio license plus a heap of customer cards and
some petty cash. Cancelled the cards within minutes. All the rest -
minus the cash - was found a day later by the cleaners in the next
subway station down the street.

That at least saved me a day around various local authorities. But since
then, I've been trying to memorise the bl**dy new PIN codes of all those
new bank and credit cards.

For that alone, they'd deserve to be hung!

As being a victem of one of the former kind I'm also glad to hear of
that success story - especially told so nicely.

Late to comment as I had company all day yesterday - a rare event that
required hours of prep the house, the actual visit - (an annual
tradition of watching the Masters Golf tourney) - and the clean-up and
recovery.

I still am not quite grasping how you managed it (from computer at

Subject: OT: Apple doesn't fall far from the tree

In three weeks I'm cycling the Sarsen Trail
 with a friend.
I don't normally cycle off-road, and my bike is a lightweight tourer,
so I thought I'd better try it out and perhaps borrow an off-road one
if I didn't think my audax would stand up to it.

So today I took off the mudguards and rack, fitted some cyclocross
knobbly tyres and headed up to Oxleas Wood, some ancient woodland
about 5 miles from where I live.

I put my wallet, iPhone, camera, glasses, bike lock and a book in a
nylon stuffsac, which I then put into a seat bag. My plan had been to
reward myself afterwards with a nice cup of tea and a good read in the
wonderfully badly-kept-secret cafe they have up there, with
magnificent views east - I believe it's the highest point in London.

It was a dark and stormy night. The woods were dark and deep. No. It
was a beautiful spring day. My bike looked really cool, the woods were
lush and green. The forest floor was a cliche of bluebells, so I kept
stopping to take pictures. It was a bit of a drag fishing the camera
out of the seatbag each time, so I decided to strap it, in its CCS
case, to my belt, and went off charging around again.

Half an hour later, I realise I didn't close the seat bag. My
favourite wallet, my credit cards, driving licence, Oyster card, £75-
cash, iPhone, glasses, bike lock (£100!) and Marivaux are gone.

Dilemma. Rush home and cancel everything, or try to find it. I spent 3
fruitless hours randomly searching the Ice Age undergrowth, like some
sort of Hansel & Gretel, lost in there. Trees and leaves and sodding
bluebells all look the same after a while but you soon get to know all
the empty beer cans, bits of bog roll and pre-loved condoms in the
whole fucking forest when you're stressed out of your mind.

So I gave up and came home. On the way of course some fuckwit in a car
decided he was the only fuckwit who should be allowed on the road and
we ended up in a shouting match which finished in comedy when he said
"you wouldn't say that if I wasn't in this car", to which I wittily
reparteed "get out of the fucking car then", and he drove off.
Marivaux could have learned some things from me.

I cancelled my cards, and was looking on the iPad for a way to disable
the iPhone when I found this Apple thing called, er, Find my iPhone.
Hmm. Wonder what that does. So I tried it and it showed that it was
still in the woods, and let me set it to lost, so hopefully it
wouldn't let anyone else play with it and find all my dark secret
things. I was resigned to losing the cash.

Now, I hope someone from Apple gets to read this, because it's a great
app, but it would be even greater if it told you the coordinates of
the centre of the circle where your iPhone is, and the radius of the
circle.

So, I opened my GPS programme, which is called ExpertGPS and is pretty
good , and by squinting a bit and finding a
couple of reference points on the maps, made a stab at a waypoint for
the lost phone, as well a waypoint for a reference point on the ground
which marked out a line to follow. I then loaded the waypoints onto my
GPS, and cycled back to the woods.

It took another hour of searching, but this time methodically, and I
found it.

It felt like a miracle. I made a waypoint on the GPS where I found the
stuff, and when I got home again compared the actual position with the
one I'd crudely made based on the Find my iPhone result. They were
only 17 metres apart, which I think is not bad under the circumstances.

So at the moment I love Apple.

I hate Dell though, because the screen on my laptop seems to have
failed. Guess I'll have to replace it with a Mac.

Oh, and the bike performed superbly.
