as i've mentioned before, i am very happy with Fastmail, which i moved to in
2011; they are serious email specialists; i have never experienced a meaningful
disruption (i get notifications by RSS in which they acknowledge little
glitches, but usually it's just a problem with one of several redundant servers)

i have two domains there and use IMAP primarily, but their webmail is pretty
good in a pinch, and works remarkably well on iPad or even iPhone

i use the "Enhanced" plan, $40/year, because i have email for two personal
domains there (so far), but you can go cheaper if you don't need that:

what i particularly like is Fastmail's server-side filtering, which supports
in-depth customization with Sieve

if you do want to use your own domain, note that you can host basic websites
with Fastmail, or you can set the DNS for your domain(s) so Fastmail handles
email and another service handles web hosting

i also have Yahoo, Gmail, and iCloud email accounts that i use a bit; if you
want a free service that comes with some decent extras and is not Google,
iCloud's worth a try; you can do regular IMAP with any client; unlike Fastmail,
iCloud has had some significant outages, but not an obnoxious number of them

I use Apple's mail service through iCloud and it's been 100% reliable. But I
also have a bunch of domains, leased and managed by Hover.com, each with its
own email. Hover has very affordable domain name management and email
offerings, and they've been 100% reliable. They're also great on service. See
https://www.hover.com/email for email details.

I moved all my domains and such from GoDaddy.com a while back. I was unhappy
with the complexity and need for service. Hover is a piece of cake to work
with.

Re: I hope someone will see this & be able to reply.

2014-06-11 Thread John Sessoms

I don't hate gmail. I just already have more Google in my life than I
want, and I'm not going to add any more.

I'm not looking for web hosting.

I just want a reliable, non-intrusive email service provider that I can
access using Thunderbird. I don't mind paying for service, but I'm
getting really tired of paying for service and not getting it.

I'm fed up with Time Warner, and I'm fed up with Yahoo.

I will be following up pair.com and earthlink tomorrow. Both had actual
telephone numbers on their websites so that I can talk to someone there
to find out if they have available what I want.

On 6/11/2014 8:25 PM, Christine Aguila wrote:

the annual fee affordable, though I can't remember what it is as I

Perhaps something like this might be an option for you.

You can have either or both POP3 and IMAP. (I use both.) And it can
be set up to scrape other mailservers via POP for you so you get
all your mail in one place.

It's reliable. I've been using it as my (almost) sole email server
for over seven years and the amount of time I could not access my
mail in that period is maybe an hour.

It has competent tech support staff. I wouldn't give you odds that
you could ever contact any of them, but you never need to because
they treat it seriously and run it like an actual business with
paying customers. Indeed they have paying levels of support (Google
Apps) so the free users benefit.

They provide infinitely more service than you pay for since you
don't pay anything for it. :-)

And you don't need to worry about ads and such if you only access
it through IMAP or POP3. You'll just get your mail; no hassles.

I think I can speak for all PDMLers when I say that I'd really like

Lets deconstruct that. If they have a combined history of whatever, then it
probably is not separately. So Saying “Together” is not needed. And then we
find that “…both partners have…” Not just one of the partners, but both of
them? Imagine that.

A simple straightforward phrasing would be: “The partners have a combined
history…” If they are going to write meaningless twaddle, at least they could
avoid bad writing.

Consider the source. The kind of folks that write meaningless twaddle
are not the kind that worry about writing quality. Having had to work
closely with The Marketing Dept. at a couple of high-tech firms, I
know this well.

At best you can hope that meaningless twaddle producers would at least

Technically, sperm that carries a Y chromosome could be said to be
"male" sperm and that with an X chromosome could be said to be a
"female" sperm. But I don't think that's what they meant :)

That's two people, you and Bill, who think Toronto is the centre of the
universe and only one, Dali, his anteater and his lobster, who think it's
Perpignan railway station. So I guess Toronto gets it. i'll see you both on the
station forecourt on the morning of 6th July, and I hope there's a night train

I need a new email service provider.

Time Warner's servers have been down for two days now and they have no
idea if they are ever going to fix the problem.

We've already been over the problems inherent in using Yahoo for email
especially with a mailing list.

I want POP3 or IMAP. I want a service that is reliable. And I want a
service that has a competent tech support staff in case I actually need
to contact them about a problem.

And more than anything else, I want a service provider that will
actually provide the service I pay for.

Re: Another one bites the dust -- Ilford

2014-06-11 Thread Igor Roshchin

Stan, yes, I saw that but decided that I shouldn't be too picky. :-)

Back when I was a kid, there was a very popular program "Radio-Nanny".
They were discussing a bunch of different things, but occasionally they
were discussing some grammar questions in a funny way.

One time there was this dialogue:
- ... I saw it with my own eyes! ...
- Hold on .. Do you have eyes that yours but not own(ed)?
- I saw it with my eyes!...
- Hold on... Can you see with somebody else's eyes?
- I saw it with eyes!...
- Can you see with something besides your eyes (maybe ears?)
- I saw it!
- There we go... What did you see?

Back in the college, one of my faviorite professors wrote as a part of the
autograph in his book: "Tautology yields emphasis! Keep learning, Igor!"

Indeed, frequently, the intent of tautology is the emphasis.
And that is a known effect and trend. I believe it has been even
discussed on the popular radio program "A Way With Words"
http://www.waywordradio.org/
It bothers me neverthless, I am with you on that.

Cheers,

Igor

Lets deconstruct that. If they have a combined history of whatever, then it
probably is not separately. So Saying "Together" is not needed. And then we
find that "...both partners have..." Not just one of the partners, but both of
them? Imagine that.

A simple straightforward phrasing would be: "The partners have a combined
history..." If they are going to write meaningless twaddle, at least they
could
avoid bad writing.

Of course. It means we were arguing about the sharpness of glass and
sturdiness of tripods before the camera was even invented.

Thank you, for the interesting document.
Well, the Press Release you referenced is full of ... puffing up the

"Together, both partners have a combined history of 146 years in

Along those lines, PDML has combined photographic experience of over
500 years!
Does that number matter?

Good stuff (and things that I already do, actually).

I was puzzled only by the "hold the alt key when moving sliders to see what
you're changing and avoid clipping" tip. It's much simpler to just hover over
(or click on) the "black clipping" and "highlight clipping" arrows on each top
corner of the histogram when you REALLY want to know if you're going "below
black" or "above white".

Thanks, Bill. Did you see my comment to Frank? Can I put the blame on

The good news for me is that am free to concentrate 100% on connecting

The waving-near-her-ear could have been because I was having her avoid
putting too much weight on her arms ("just touch; don't lean"), or
just bad timing of the shot on my part too.

Thank you, Paul.

Thanks, Bill. Did you see my comment to Frank? Can I put the blame on
my attempt to caption it -- I have no idea what was actually going
through the model's head at that moment.

The good news for me is that am free to concentrate 100% on connecting
with the model, if you guys all feel the lighting is okay. :-) That
will be my next plateau.

Re: PESO - News ...

Would it work better without the caption? -- say, "Untitled".

This was just a spontaneous pose that the model held for a moment. I
realize that by adding my caption I'm interpreting some aspect of the
scene, and in turn likely influencing the viewer to some extent.

Thanks for considering it, Frank.

Very interesting to hear differing views on this subject matter.
Facial expressions are complex and showing _real_ emotion is not
trivial.

amazing what using a tripod does :-)
And that macro lens is terrific, isn't it?

that works, although I'd have toned it down just a tad - the
green leaves look not quite real - again, that mya just be my monitor

Looks like a nice route. I had thought that following the meridian would be
straighter, but I guess you choose to stick mostly to roads.

Travel monitor for a mac mini?

2014-06-11 Thread Larry Colen
I’m looking at a possible short notice road trip. At the moment, my only
reasonably powerful computer is a mac mini. The displays that I have for it are
fine for the desktop, but physically too big to be convenient to take on a
trip, and the “smaller” display is only 1080x1920 resolution.
The ideal display for taking my computer on the road would probably be the
equivalent of a standalone 15” retina display.

Does anyone have suggestions for a relatively inexpensive solution for that?

Failing that, I would at least want an inexpensive portable machine (laptop?)
that has good bandwidth reading SSD cards and USB 3 connectivity to an external
drive, so that I could at least copy files off of my cards onto an external
drive while on the road.

That's a damn good effort, hope it goes well. And I hope you remember to stop
or you'll end up like Sir Ranulph Fiennes and circumnavigate the world the hard
way.

We're doing a similar thing in Australia later in the year but on a train
instead. It'd be amazing to bike through there but maybe a bit dangerous.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: PESO: Gazania

2014-06-11 Thread David Mann
My favourite! :D I love the colours on those flowers.

I have tons of them in the front garden in lots of different colours. They
thrive despite the poor, dry soil there and they tolerate the frosts well.
I've spent a couple of seasons digging up the little ones that self-sow and
repositioning them (I didn't have any success trying to sprout the seeds in
trays). Next season I should have lots of blooms around the letterbox.

Here's a closeup of one that I took a few years ago.
