I did quickly scan through the video, and while I'm not enamored with
the photo, I actually learned a couple of useful bits on the quick scan
of the video. If the goal of the video was to give a quick overview

I call this the "Thomas Kinkade School of Photographic

colors in the image should be found in actual scene seen.

A couple of pesos, experimenting with fluorescent body paint

2014-10-15 Thread Larry Colen

A trial run of an artistic collaboration that I'm working on with a friend.

Tonight's session was practice for an art event on Friday. Here are two
of my favorites:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/14921329673/in/set-72157648768951252

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/15541510825/

If you're curious, here is the whole set:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157648768951252/

Photographing under black light gave the highest contrast, and best
distinction between some of the colors. Photographing with a blue gel
over the strobes gave us more light and sharper photos, and also more
light on the skins. If I dialed my gelled speedlight down low in
addition to the CF black lights, I could mix the two effects, dialing in
how much skin I wanted visible.

A couple photos in the set show the results of another interesting
project that I'm working on with another friend, where she is knitting
fluorescent webbing into a net. I believe she actually used her arms for
knitting needles on these two pieces, to get the very loose web.

It was a fun evening, and the technique shows some interesting promise.

Re: PESO: Afternoon light

2014-10-15 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks for your comments Dan Ann Ken Jack John Christine and Ciprian.
Ciprian, the #63 was taken 2 days earlier. I quite liked it until I did the
second one, #64, yesterday, but I think the colors in 64 with I think a lower
light, dark clouds etc all helping the shot. In fact I had intended to remove
#63 from the site and forgot to take that step. I do agree that the sharper
reflections in #63 add something to that shot.

We have Canada geese, mallards, Blue Heron, and Egret as regular presences on
the river - my ideal would be to get the colors of #64 with the reflections of
#63 with the added element of a family of geese or an egret in the “right”
place in the frame. We also have large fish in the river, by accident I have
come within a half second of catching a jumping fish in one of my river scenes.
I could live with a fish in the right place, right time, in lieu of birds in my
ideal shot…

Unexpected Autumnal Forsythia

2014-10-15 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Forsythia is widely planted in this area, and it makes a spectacular
show in the spring. On the local highway, the Department of
Transportation plants forsythia in the media over a stretch of several
miles, providing a showy wall of yellow in late March or early April.

I planted 5 small forsythia a couple of years ago. The first spring
there were only a few yellow flowers, but in spring 2014, they did a
lot better, and two of the five were actually quite showy. I have
high hopes for next spring.

Strangely, one of the five new forsythia has decided to bloom this
fall, and it is currently almost equal to what it showed last spring:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17882334

Has anyone else had forsythia go into bloom in the fall?

Re: A couple of pesos, experimenting with fluorescent body paint

Thank you Bruce and Dan.

Are you documenting the event too? I'll be interested to see/hear how that goes.

Yes, I'll be photographing at Glow.

http://www.santacruzmah.org/event/glow-a-festival-of-light/

I don't expect to get quite as good of photos there because I'll have
much less control over the environment. I was pleased to learn that a
simple blue gel over my speedlight will actually work for getting photos
of fluorescent objects. It doesn't work as well as a black light gel
would, but I don't think those are available.

On Wed, Oct 15, 2014 at 7:26 AM, Larry Colen wrote:

A trial run of an artistic collaboration that I'm working on with a friend.

Tonight's session was practice for an art event on Friday. Here are two of
my favorites:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/15541510825/

If you're curious, here is the whole set:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157648768951252/

Photographing under black light gave the highest contrast, and best
distinction between some of the colors. Photographing with a blue gel over
the strobes gave us more light and sharper photos, and also more light on
the skins. If I dialed my gelled speedlight down low in addition to the CF
black lights, I could mix the two effects, dialing in how much skin I wanted
visible.

A couple photos in the set show the results of another interesting project
that I'm working on with another friend, where she is knitting fluorescent
webbing into a net. I believe she actually used her arms for knitting
needles on these two pieces, to get the very loose web.

It was a fun evening, and the technique shows some interesting promise.

experimenting with blue gel for fluorescent subjects

Today at lunch I went to the local theatrical supply. It seems that the
gel that, so far, works the best is rosco 381

https://www.rosco.com/filters/SED.cfm?titleName=R381:%20Baldassari%20Blue&imageName=../images/filters/roscolux/381.jpg

A website recommended 59, but that seems to transmit a lot more in the red:

I've been using one of these on my speedlight for a while and it works a
treat:

Especially since you can usually get a sample pack of the gels at a

Re: experimenting with blue gel for fluorescent subjects

2014-10-15 Thread Larry Colen
I had had the clever idea that when photographing under black light,
since most things fluoresce in the if I used a yellow filter on the
lens, it would block out a lot of the blue/violet from the light and
only let the glowey bits through. So, I tried a test with a set of
filters. In short, it may be clever idea, but it wasn't a good idea. It
didn't work:

http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157646460095073/

You can tell the filter color on the lens by which one isn't in the
picture, or by reading the tags. I've got photos shot with the filter
under white light, under blue gelled light, and also color balanced
either to "flash" or on an individual basis. 1963 and 1964 were shot
under black light, 64, just black light, 64 black light plus a flash.

1967-1973 were shot under black light (seems appropriate, nome sane?),
67 and 73 without a filter, the others with each with a filter.
73 shows one hazard of using a filter when shooting in black light, the
filter itself fluoresced. A problem that I ran into with my fancy water
repellant filter on my 16-50.

I hope these tests are useful to someone else who might try to do black
light photography.

Thank you for your feedback!

Bob, as my daughter says: "That's funny!" ;-)

I didn't expect to like these, Igor, because I find the people who

in the first one though..

It probably evolved from the dinosaurs in one of our parks:

Some of you have seen the first photo about 1-2 weeks ago.

It's a work in progress: I am still deciding which ones I like, and
which ones - not quite... I especially like #2 (9014) for the
interesting combination of the pattern in different bubbles, and the
last two (9025 and 9026) - for the color patterns.

I am very interested to hear what other people think about images in
this set. So, I'd appreciate your comments.

Igor
