PESO: Cold

2014-10-28 Thread Alan C
The scene which greeted us when we arrived at the Crystal Springs Mountain
resort last Friday. It looks like snow but it is actually small hail. We had
a cold, wet weekend but the chalet had an excellent fireplace & the TV
reception was good. The highlight of the W/E was probably the Currie Cup
Rugby Final in which Western Province held on to beat the Lions (formerly
Transvaal) 16-13. Conditions were not wonderful for photography but I will
post a GESO later.

Re: External Hard Drives

2014-10-28 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Mark,

Just in case, - since you mentioned you were considering a USB 3.0 card, -
Two years ago, I bought this card:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/696114-REG/Transcend_TS_PDU3_2_Port_USB_3_0_PCI.html
I put it into my desktop that was put into "production" back in January of
2007.
I am not using this desktop as frequently as my laptop, but I have some
software on it that is not available elsewhere, and so, it is very nice to
be able to use the same HDDs efficiently.

I don't remember if you are using a Mac or PC, but if it is a PC, $13
is not that much to get a much better experience.

Cheers,

Igor

PS. There are more expensive cards with that have more than 2 ports, but
those are (1) more expensive, and (2) they have some additional
limitations due to the PCI-e. However, if you've got an empty PCI-e x4
(or x16) slot, I suspect you can buy something that is even better.
Also, note that the card referenced above may not adequate power to power
some "mobile" HDDs that are USB 3.0-powered (and require 0.9V). For those,
you need a card with an additional power connector (from the power source
or elsewhere). If you have any questions on this, - feel free to ask me.

I like the water lily shot, although the left hand side is a bit dull.
I'd crop a bit off the left (just right of the semi-circular leaf) and
maybe a bit off the top as well. That crop would give a more pleasing
composition (to my eye) and draw a bit more attention to the small
water puddle flowing off to the lower right which, I think, adds
considerable interest to the whole image.

The BBC television show "Top Gear" recently (this year, I think) did a
good episode on "post war micro cars" that includes quite a few of
these. Actually, it wasn't "Top Gear" itself, but rather James May,
only. The title of the series of shows is "Cars of the People", and
episode 2 is the one with micro cars. There's also a "Top Gear" episode
about the Peel P50 (?) and the BMW Isetta, and several including Reliant
Robins.

My recent spate of shooting 6x7 film expedited the need to upgrade -

Re: OT - Photomatix Essentials Free Download

2014-10-28 Thread Mark C
FWIW - I use Photomatix regularly on landscapes. When used with
restraint it has a great way of evening up the tonality in an image and
clarifying details. I often create a file in Photomatix and use it as a
layer in compositions and find it very useful. It takes some time to
figure out the controls and there are some controls that are needed but
not present, but it can be a great tool.

I don't use it one closeups or macros - somehow it makes landscapes
clearer but muddies up closeups.

Wow - fabulous scene! I am drawn slightly more to the color than B&W but
both are excellent. The golden leaves - on the trail and in the tree
tops - appeals to me, but the core of the photo - the great repetition
in the aspen stand - is there in color or B&W.

Re: External Hard Drives

2014-10-28 Thread Bob W-PDML
I'm trying out an experiment at the moment with OneDrive, after mentioning it
in a previous reply.

You can keep your LR library on the local drive and put a symbolic link to it
in the OneDrive folder, and OneDrive synchronises it online. The advantage of
keeping the working library on the hard disk is of course access speed, but the
whole thing is backed up offsite automatically.

I started this on Sunday and it is still synchronising, but I have much less
data than you.

A good specimen with interesting colors, appears to be very sharp and
detailed. Nice shot. I am more familiar with geraniums as having flowers

Valued remarks, Paul! Thanks.

The B&W is the only one I have framed and exhibit. The color, however, attracts

I like these two as a diptych, but I think the individual frames are strong

Re: Two images from a recent visit to the Atlanta Botanical Garden

2014-10-28 Thread Bruce
A general comment - for both the subject comes across as being too centered.
It could be partially aspect ratio, but in any case, I would crop just a bit
somewhere to shift these. As the background in both images is not strongly
contributing, any crop would probably work. Doing that much would help.

As for each image - I prefer the water lilly. I think partly because the
background competes less than in the crocus. Also, the lighting is more
pleasing.

In both cases, I would really look to blurring the background more - possibly a
longer focal length and/or a more wide open shot to really get the background
to not compete with the subject.

It is interesting to view from an ipad because you can pinch zoom and then drag
the image around to see the effects of what a crop would look like. For the
water lilly, I think cropping alone would really strengthen the shot and end up
with a very pleasing image.

I know that there are many car enthusiasts on this list.
Additionally, I find some of these images funny.

If you are looking on a desktop, - make sure you click on the horizontal

so that you can see all the images.
I dislike this design (compared to the "linear" design that I get on my

That is exactly what made the pair work for me. I think of the Harry Potter
movies where people move back and forth between pictures. The little boy seems
like he is ready to jump to the other picture. So the two work together. The
left one doesn't work so well stand alone. The right one can stand alone.

Another 6x7 film shot from the past couple of weeks. This is one
Kodak Ektar

challenge
to scan and get the colors right. Out of the scanner needed more
adjustment

You should be able to blur the background more selecting it and
then just using noise reduction, dust and scratches thing. I don't
think it needs to be done radically. YOu really nailed the flower.

Subject: PESO: Blue Geranium

Earlier this month, my wife and I attended the 2014 Far Hills Race
Meeting, and I have posted a few images from that event. Perhaps more
will come.

On the way home from the races, we took the back roads to avoid all
the drunks leaving the tailgate parties. We passed the Leonard J.
Buck Garden, part of a former estate now owned and operated by the
Somerset County Park Commission. My wife noted it had been quite a
while since our last visit, so this past Saturday, we drove up to
visit the Garden.

It is not as spectacular as in the spring, especially when the azaleas
and rhododendrons are in full bloom. Never-the-less, it is always a
pleasant site for a peaceful walk in the serenity of nature.

There were a few colorful plants in bloom, including this unusual blue
geranium:

Re: PESO My fav pano spot

2014-10-28 Thread Ann Sanfedele
Rob, my HP monitor's screen's aspect ratio is 16 x 9 - that's what I
"cropped" your image to :-) - and I enlarged your photo so I could "pan"
across and see everything on it... I got a lot of detail in pieces...
the first view I get is the whole image across the screen but with the
bottom of the screen all white..

Ah yes the opera house, they always show that here on TV whenever there
is any news at all from your 'Town" :-)

I make a distinction between a photographer's artistry/craftmanship in
capturing an image, whether or not the subject matter is something I
like. I just found the left hand side of the pano more pleasing to
look at..reflections in quiet waters are soothing.

got any pano's from the outback? ;)

Sorry Ann, it's a big image, without using the Gigapan site of
something similar it's difficult to display such images effectively,
if you make them fit into a normal screen you end up discarding all
the details which is what really makes the image IMO. The "sails"
building is the Sydney Opera House, that and the Sydney Harbour Bridge
are basically the Sydney Harbour tourist icons though of course there
is far more to the city.

Bob, it was a pleasure being able to spend time with you, any time you
are out this way again :)
