GESO Ready, Set, Fierce

2015-05-14 Thread Larry Colen
I photographed my first theatrical dance performance last week. There
were about 22 different pieces, and I photographed the rehearsal
Thursday, and two performances on Friday. I used speedlights on radio
triggers (one on each side of the stage) for some of the shots on
Thursday, but the performances were all shot in available light.

Here are 19 of the best from the two days of shooting. I just heard from
my friend who got me the gig and the dancers are happy with my work.

They varied, using the fluidr front end that shows ISO easily:
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157652772015702/

I'm seeing it vary from 80-10,000.

Since I didn't really have any do-overs, I kept varying my settings to
make sure that something turned out. With the stage lighting, one big
challenge was not blowing out one of the color channels.

I wonder if you could design electronic shutters to operate
independently on each of the color channels, so that white balance could
be approximated by reducing the exposure on the hotter channels to keep
them from clipping.

That gallery is a very nice job, Larry!

The best ones are 4219, 2676, 4341, 6761, 7893, 9251.

8684 is a good example of a well-caught dynamic moment (as opposed to a
static, posed one)

If it were mine, I would consider trimming 9251 from the top to 1:1.

As for the motion-blurred shot, the long-exposure photos do come out
very interesting occasionally.

A friend of mine recently reminded me of this old one that was also
accidental:
http://42graphy.org/tango/dallas-2008-12-13/IMGP4909.html

Almost 7 years ago, at Camp Hollywood, I had a few attempts of that,
but it was hard to get something that would stand out, as can be
seen in this set:
http://42graphy.org/swing/ch-2008/motion/

I had more consistent results when I was shooting with a combination of a
flash and some longish exposure (typically 1/15s-1/30s for a mid-tempo
blues dance). I posted them a few years ago. E.g.

Thank you.

If it were mine, I would consider trimming 9251 from the top to 1:1.

Or even a much tighter vertical crop.

There is something that I like about it this way that accentuates the
reaching up into empty space.

With the way that I spent two days fighting the lighting in just about
every way imaginable, that one is a pleasant surprise in how nice the
lighting on it looks.

As for the motion-blurred shot, the long-exposure photos do come out
very interesting occasionally.

Rarely enough that I wouldn't normally do so deliberately, but when I
screw up *and* it works, I'll be happy to take credit.

Same couple? Doing that at SFLX a while back taught me the benefit of
putting a CTO gel on my strobe when I drag the shutter to get light on
the background, so I'm not fighting two different color temps.

I don't suppose you'll be showing up for Blues Quake? It turns out that
Dan Matyola will be in town that weekend.

Nice shot. Might work better if you cropped in a lot tighter and lost
the blown out areas. The mid-upper left side.

No actually we are in need of rain. It is their mating season and they

At Radnor Lake a nice nature area here in Nashville there are

4219? do you mean 2415?

No, I actually meant 4219, but listed it out of order.

I had more consistent results when I was shooting with a combination of a
flash and some longish exposure (typically 1/15s-1/30s for a mid-tempo blues
dance). I posted them a few years ago. E.g.
http://42graphy.org/swing/abp-2011/selected/_IR31133.html
http://42graphy.org/swing/abp-2011/selected/_IR31127.html .

Same couple? Doing that at SFLX a while back taught me the benefit of
putting a CTO gel on my strobe when I drag the shutter to get light on
the background, so I'm not fighting two different color temps.

No, those are two different couples (if that's what you asked about).
Yes, I remember your use of gels. You also used them in Austin at ABP.
I've been thinking about that, but I am just too lazy to get to them.

I don't suppose you'll be showing up for Blues Quake? It turns out that
Dan Matyola will be in town that weekend.

Unfortunately not... We haven't danced for about a year...
The dance in the Silicon Valley a year ago, with you, - was the latest
blues/swing dances we had, and after that we may have had one local
milonga...
Late night dancing conflicts with our daughter's sleep schedule, and she
no longer gets asleep at a dance venue.

It would've been nice to see Dan, but ... not this time.
And his photo reports from the quick passage through San Diego is touching
the nerve: I miss San Diego.

Cheers,

Igor

Re: PESO: Bull Elephant

2015-05-14 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Dan,

San Diego zoo is a very exciting place, and, evidently, not just for the
visitors.
Back in September of 2007, while we were still in San Diego, and a friend
was visiting me, we saw this zebra:

Some small kids near us was asking their parents (who were
embarassed and ablush) what that was.

Igor

PS. I envy you! Enjoy your trip!

OT - 80th anniversary of Moscow subway, - "metro"

2015-05-14 Thread Igor PDML-StR

On May 15, Moscow (Russia) subway, "Metro" is celebrating its 80th
birthday. The Guardian published a gallery of photos from various
stations, including some old ones.

I thought it would be interesting to some PDMLers
http://www.theguardian.com/cities/gallery/2015/may/14/moscow-metro-80-anniversary-city-history-in-pictures
short URL:
http://goo.gl/A08n41

When I was a kid and visited Moscow, that was the first subway I've seen.
Later, I saw some foreigners taking photographs inside the stations, and
was somewhat surprised why.

While somebody explained it to me back then, it wasn't until 1994, that
I understood that to the full extend while riding Chicago's "L"
for the first time.

Cheers,

Igor
