Re: PESO - Glastonbury Abbey

2015-06-16 Thread Chris Mitchell
Oliver can't take the rap for this one. He came later. This Cromwell
was Thomas, Henry VIII's chief minister and architect of the programme
to dissolve the monasteries and a distant relative to Oliver.

Olly was partly responsible for the other piece of cultural vandalism
in Rick's picture of the West front of Wells Cathedral, being a
leading light in the puritan movement that destroyed many works of art
in its campaign to remove idolatry from churches.

I much prefer the software on CD/DVD, but I understand that it must be more
profitable to remove the marketing and disc production costs. Many companies
are now going this way, and whilst the current monthly subscription isn't
excessive, I always feel there is the potential at some point for that to
alter with a captive market.

Now, I understand, having pushed most of the customers down the subscription
route, it becomes our fault. I read that over 50% of custom is via this
subscription method a while back, so they are only supplying what the market
wants. Thanks for that.

Although I'm not on subscription, I feel locked in because I hate learning
new computer software and having (or getting) to grips with LR and PSE means
I am loath to start learning something else - although I'm always grateful
for list members posting information about alternatives, because the day
might come where I switch rather than become assimilated.

Re: New Lightroom/Photoshop Features

2015-06-16 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I have no desire to be an apologist for my bank account.

That said, some of the old features it has depend on the amount of money
leaving it not exceeding the amount coming in. So, the use of standalone
LR ensures that the bank account is capable of being used to provide the
future.

This gentle balance is one reason why CC subscription can be an
unreasonable requirement for these old features.
Otherwise, I'd have to search for more and more of $$ to support features
like this, making using LR more unreasonable and ultimately increasing the
potential risks of bugs crawling into my proverbial wallet.

And if I am not needing both PS and LR, the cost analysis clearly shows
that a standalone LR is much cheaper than CC.

:-)

Cheers,

Igor

versions of both LR and PS are installed and capable of being used to provide

This integration is one reason why CC subscription can be a reasonable
requirement for these new features. Otherwise, they'd have to port more and
more of PS into LR to support new features like this, making testing more
expensive and ultimately increasing the potential risks of bugs on different
versions of LR and PS.

And if you are going to need both PS and LR, the cost analysis of what it
takes to stay up to date between perpetual license versions and subscription
favors subscription.

I am really feeling good in that the DFA 50mm macro has proven to
be exceptional, and the K 24 f3.5 looks like it will be every bit
as good. I tried a lot of lenses recently for high magnification
work - M 50mm f4 macro, M 50mm f1.7, A 28mm f2.8, F 28mm f2.8, and
XR Rikenon 28mm f2.8 and a few enlarger lenses (admittedly no first
rate enlarger lenses). The F 28mm f2.8 was the only one that
delivered acceptable results, but this K24 is clearly a cut above.
Pentax should revive some the optical formulas in these cult
classic lenses - add the latest coatings, AF and LTD lens build
quality - call them the CC Limited Series.

I also should comment that I am very positively impressed with
B&H's return process. I never had occasion to use their return
service before, but they quickly processed the return on the AF 160
ringflash that did not work out. I replaced the flash with an

Of course it's a lot better for them. However, I object to paying the
Adobe photographers tax.

I'm not sure why the subscription model wouldn't be better for them.
They have a predictable continuous cash flow and an ongoing
relationship with their customer.

With the stand alone product, they get a bigger chunk of cash all at
once, but they may never see the customer again.

A lot harder to run a company when you get a big chunk of money every
once in a while.

The upgrade process via the Adobe CC app was particularly nice. CC
popped up the notification of the availability of the upgrade. There
was a nice "what's new" link that described the new features in both
Lightroom and Photoshop. After the upgrade it displayed a link to
tutorials. Much better than in the past.

Lots of new features for Lightroom mobile, but I'm fairly stationary

Overall, very nice.

I'm sort of embarrassed to say that (3 days after saying I was not
aware of the 24mm f3.5) I now realize that I own the S-M-C Takumar
version of it, which is apparently has been the same optical formula
from Super Takumar to K version. I don't think I've ever even had it
on the camera. After looking at some images and examples, I think I'm
going to have to change that and see if my copy is as sharp as many
say.

Bojidar's site says that the K 24 f3.5 was made from 1975-77, with the

Stangely enough, Don, the tee shirts wereactually adverised as having

Igor, the dog wanted to look at us. It was difficult enough to get
him to face forward, and there was no chance to get him to emulate the
pose of the dog on the shirts. For that, you would need a hunting dog
or a herding dog or some other obedience breed. Even when I
positioned a dog treat in the appropriate direction, he kept turning

That said, some of the new features they add to Lightroom CC depend upon
service programming interfaces (SPIs) which utilize Photoshop CC internal
libraries to get the job done , so the use of CC ensures that the correct
versions of both LR and PS are installed and capable of being used to provide
the feature.

This integration is one reason why CC subscription can be a reasonable
requirement for these new features. Otherwise, they'd have to port more and
more of PS into LR to support new features like this, making testing more
expensive and ultimately increasing the potential risks of bugs on different
versions of LR and PS.

And if you are going to need both PS and LR, the cost analysis of what it takes
to stay up to date between perpetual license versions and subscription favors
subscription.

PESO - Glastonbury Abbey

2015-06-16 Thread Rick Womer
It was another beautiful day with harsh light, but one must suffer for one's
art...

Glastonbury Abbey was well-established by the time of the Domesday Book in
1086, though it needed rebuilding after a fire in the 1100s. It thrived until
Cromwell had it destroyed, and had the Abbott hanged, drawn, and quartered in
1539; it then fell into ruin.

The floor is no longer present, hence the slightly unusual composition.

Re: Ailing Monitor...

PJ,

I have a Dell 2407 at work, and a 2410 here at home. Both are wide-gamut, Adobe
1998-capable monitors that calibrate very nicely. The most recent model (2412?)
is only sRGB capable according to the David Brooks who wrote in Shutterbug, but
you might be able to find one of the older ones. IIRC I paid less than $400.

Well my Hitachi SuperScan CRT has been developing power supply
problems. Sadly it has the best color reproduction of any monitor I've
ever had, and replacing it with an LCD even close in image quality and
resolution looks like it will be very expensive. Finding a competent
repair tech who knows anything about CRT's also seems to be problematic
as well. Oh, well. The borrowed monitor I'm using now works I guess.

I don't have any love for Adobe either but the subscription-based model
works for me. I can't get my head around Lightroom but I use Photoshop
all the time. I originally got a hand-me-down version of CS3 but there
was no way I was ever going to be able to fork out the outrageous cost
of moving to CS6.

But 10 bucks a month? That's affordable - at least for now. And I still
have CS3 lurking in case Adobe get extra greedy...

Re: New Lightroom/Photoshop Features

Also more expensive for folks like me who only need to upgrade about
every two or three major versions.

It's kinda like: what if Ford decided to remove the buy option and
went to a "you can only lease" option for all their cars. So you get
upgrades frequently but you are paying through the nose continuously
for the rest of your days for more car and upgrades than you may need.

I have an Audi I bought new in 1998. It still works just fine and I'm
happy with it. I simply couldn't afford the you must lease option for
that. Sure I'd be driving a 2014 Audi now, but I don't need it and I
can't afford it. There's nothing wrong with my 1998.

I don't like Adobe any more. I have to use their products to get what
I want, but I don't like them, especially their marketing division.
Software leasing is for well-heeled corporations, not retired folks on

One small quibble: Indian Enfields, not Royal Enfields. Much more
reliable than that ancient British rubbish.

Lovely shots Mark. This one:

Lots of new features for Lightroom mobile, but I'm fairly stationary

Re: List Problems

2015-06-16 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Dave,

Besides the information in the footer of the message, there is information
in the headers of the message. The headers are typically not shown by the
mail program (or web-mail interface), but you can see them by choosing an
option "View all headers" (or whatever it is, depending on the tool).

Here how it looks "in the raw":

List-Id: Pentax-Discuss Mail List
List-Unsubscribe: ,

List-Archive:
List-Post:
List-Help:
List-Subscribe: ,

Some mail programs are smart enough to interpret those headers
and tell you that the message contains list management information.

I am glad that information was helpful.

Odd but the dogs on the tees look more 3-d than the real dog. The humans
look semi normal.

Finally got out and took some real piccies on the weekend. The boys were at the
skatepark yesterday.

I'm told this is a deceptively difficult trick: you'll notice the his front and
back wheels are on different sides of the rail:

There's a name for the stunt that I forget.

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

Cheers,

I finally put up a gallery of photos from our walk on the South West
Coast path last month. Mostly touristy/postcard type shots but worth a
look if you like scenery :)

New Lightroom/Photoshop Features

2015-06-16 Thread George Sinos
Nice upgrade to Lightroom this morning.

The new De-Haze filter is getting all the headlines, but I think the
most useful thing, for me anyway, is the addition of the whites and
blacks sliders to the local adjustment brush.

Lots of new features for Lightroom mobile, but I'm fairly stationary
and don't edit on the iPad that much.

Overall, very nice.

2015-06-16 Thread ann sanfedele
Well that was a lovely trip - thanks for taking us along! I have some
faves but too lazy to type them out.

As to the geology - hmm looks layer of not too old (geologically
speaking) conglomerate on top of the bed rock and the shape
probably has a lot to do with the direction swirling winds... probably
easy enough to find out with specific coordinates and
the local equivalent of "roadside geology" as you said you were in
Devon , after which a whole layer of geological stuff is named,

it shouldn't be too hard. I'll dig with you.

SMC-K 24mm f3.5 / SMC 24mm f2.8

2015-06-16 Thread J C OConnell
When Pentax switched over to bayonet mount lenses the first series of K
mounts included the K24/3.5.
It was later discontinued and replaced by the K24/2.8. Does anyone know
the date this happened? Was

it during the M era of lenses or before? (They never made a M series 24mm).

I bought a copy of this lens from B&H a few days ago, and it arrived
yesterday afternoon. I really have to hand it to B&H - this copy is
absolutely perfect / mint / like new condition. I bought it mostly to
use reverse mounted for macro work - something that will get me more
magnification than the DFA 50mm macro using the same extension. I
made a few test shots today and I can only say I am *really*
impressed with this lens. I fully expected to see some degree of
chromatic aberration ( and was hoping it would be correctable) - but
really, there is none. None. This may not hold up for all subjects,
but in the tests I ran today it was amazing.

I am really feeling good in that the DFA 50mm macro has proven to be
exceptional, and the K 24 f3.5 looks like it will be every bit as
good. I tried a lot of lenses recently for high magnification work -
M 50mm f4 macro, M 50mm f1.7, A 28mm f2.8, F 28mm f2.8, and XR
Rikenon 28mm f2.8 and a few enlarger lenses (admittedly no first rate
enlarger lenses). The F 28mm f2.8 was the only one that delivered
acceptable results, but this K24 is clearly a cut above. Pentax
should revive some the optical formulas in these cult classic lenses
- add the latest coatings, AF and LTD lens build quality - call them
the CC Limited Series.

I also should comment that I am very positively impressed with B&H's
return process. I never had occasion to use their return service
before, but they quickly processed the return on the AF 160 ringflash
that did not work out. I replaced the flash with an AF360FGZ original
model - so I will continue to use the flash setup that I have used
for the last 10 years or so. The cost of the K 24 f3.5 consumed the
rest of the refund, with a little left over.
