Great gallery as usual, but my two favourites just were Wind Power by Dan
Matyola & The Sand Sower by Darren Addy.

Thanks for the mention Rick, and I'll have another look at how that could be
improved. When I went down there to take that picture, I could hardly stand
up in the wind. It remained windy until the exact moment the tripod was set
up, and I then had to stand and wait for another 30 minutes for the wind to
pick up again.

Ann confirms DOn's comment :-)

I'm not going to be much help for you selecting just one Don - I enjoyed
the whole gallery. The problem is , in picking just one, is
knowing your intended audienceand also what you think is the most "you"
shot.. Love the cigars and those interesting green leaves
with the blurred backgroundand the "Frank" shot - doing this from not
having looked at them since this afternoon. Do you want to stand out or

Well, yeah, sort-of.

I asked her to do more artsy poses, arms curved way over her head for
example, which are not her usual oeuvre and are also quite tiring for
any model not used to it. But she did it, as best she could, and
finally squeaked after three or four minutes of that.

that's not bad), if you want a real bargain.

In fairness the flash is an AF200T so it's on the small side, and I
won't have any spare batteries for it. On the other hand, it's hard to
make out, but there's a clip on tulip shade for the 24mm that's holding
up the flash head in the picture. I probably wouldn't carry the remote,
the flash, the mounting plate for the el-cheapo, (SlikĀ®, but, it really
is cheap), lightweight tripod in that bag, at the same time, I'd use a
bigger bag, and carry different lenses. But, they all fit.

October PUGgery now up!!

2015-10-06 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all,

A smaller gallery this month. Most submissions went for a weather-based
interpretation of the theme but there were several who took a slightly
different approach. Surprisingly, no 'winding roads'.

Difficult to pick an overall favourite this month - so I wont... All
excellent in their own way.

As usual you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

Next up: 'On Two Wheels".

Full Submissions Guidelines here:

Re: On Topic (?) - A Lens Review... sort of.

2015-10-06 Thread Mark C
What he says is accurate. Macros are often designed for fine focusing
action when focusing close up. It's not just the lens mentioned in his
review - most macro lenses are optimized for close focusing.

The most extreme example among the lenses I have is a Kiron 105mm f.28.
The focusing mechanism turns almost 1.75 complete rotations. The first
1/4 rotation takes it from infinity to one meter. The remaining 1.5
rotations covers the distance from 1 meter to just under .45 meters. It
would be a pain to use for portraiture but is very handy for closeup work.

Thinking that, as much as I like the quality of the Sigma 170-500 apo, that

PESO - Meet'n'greet'n'shoot [nsfw]

2015-10-06 Thread Bruce Walker
I was partly responsible for a meet and greet that happened last week
at the friendly nearby studio that I rent now and then for projects.
One of the busiest glamour and fashion photographers in the area had
expressed an interest in seeing my 645Z and we'd talked about meeting
up at the studio one day. So by the time it happened, it had became a
party event complete with a couple dozen photographers, models, hair
and makeup artists and stylists. There was beer, pizza, middle eastern
snacks, and cake.

And of course, when you have photographers and models, what else? You shoot.

http://off-axis.brucemwalker.com/image/130498399447

Now, I had waited quite a while for a turn, and this model had been
enthusiastically jumping in and out of outfits for at least two hours,
so by this time we were both not bringing our A-games. But I turned
the light (Speedotron pack/head and 24" beauty dish) toward my giant
chalkboard wall (I painted this on one wall for an on-going project)
and got her to interact with it. I managed a few decent shots before
she begged-off for some food.
