A strong secondary market is good for Ricoh, (nee Pentax), true they
would prefer everyone buy new products, but older products that stand
the test of time, are good advertising, (not that Pentax is known to
have much of an advertising footprint these days), and if a user
upgrades and finances that upgrade by selling older equipment, that
benefits the company as well. Once someone is locked into the a system
it becomes just that much more difficult to switch.

Some is simply selling to bring dollars. Others could be to fund
purchase of non-Pentax gear.

So if majority of people follow in same, then Pentax sells less new
items at highest profit margin.

The best thing for Pentax is if users consistently upgrade and
purchase largely new Pentax items.

used to take a bus to brooklyn that doesnt exist anymore, shop on atlantic ave

Funny thing is, I'd never seen photos from that perspective before...
and I found the spot by accident. Also possible I walked across the Brooklyn

The desktop site is the url before '/blog'; there's a redirect to the
problematic page.

The problem with it is that it gives you nothing if you're on a mobile device.
I'd quite like to read the stuff on the site - that's why I followed the link
in the first place.

I accept that small organisations without professional IT may not be able to do
responsive design (although these days it should be the default even on
cheap/free CMSes), but they haven't even given me the choice of a sub-optimal
experience, just a flat out "no, we won't let you see our site at all", and I
can't be arsed to go upstairs, switch on the desktop machine and go hunting for
their desktop site.

Comments are invited.

The color of this sunset is produced by "vog" from the Big Island,
which had been drifting over to Maui because a high pressure area was
diverting the usual trade winds from the Northeast.

Vog isresults when sulfur dioxide and other gases and particles
emitted by an erupting volcano react with oxygen and moisture in the
presence of sunlight. The word is a portmanteau of the words
"volcanic", "smog", and "fog".

Vog makes for colorful sunsets, but can cause headaches, watery eyes,
sore throats, or even breathing difficulties if it is concentrated
enough or persists for a long period or time. On Maui, it is usually
quite mild compared to what can occur on certain portions of the
Island of Hawaii (the Big Island).

It is only a minor annoyance here, and only for those suffering from
asthma or some similar condition, but it does cut down the visibility
quite a bit, and adds a lot of color to the sunrises and sunsets. [on

see this on the list and some people (like me) would NOT see the

That is the case, Ken. The waters off Maui are included in the
Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and there
are rather strict regulations to protect the whales. The Whales are
here to give birth and to breed. They don't eat anything from the
time they leave the Gulf of Alaska until they return there several
weeks later. (In fact, there is nothing here for them to eat.) The
regulations are primarily to protect the new-born calves, until they
are large enough and strong enough to make the journey north to the
feeding waters/

The rules are a little more flexible off the coast of Alaska and in
the North Atlantic, as the whales there are feeding and storing up
energy for the next migration, and not quite as sensitive to human
disturbances. We did a whale watch out of Gloucester, MA, years ago,
and the boats there approached much more closely to the whales than
the boats here are permitted to do.

Re: Converting bad SDM to screw drive AF

2016-02-01 Thread John

100% of anything I buy used does not go towards the purchase of new
gear from Pentax. But what's best for Pentax isn't always what's best
for me.

During the last decade or so, Pentax hasn't always made the lenses I
want available, so buying used or buying from a third party lens
manufacturer has been my only option.

On 1/31/2016 11:55 PM, Kim Tang wrote:

I agree. Much of what you say maybe be true.

But must ask. Some percent of used sales not going to fund purchase

PESO: Vog Sunset

2016-02-01 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
The sunset, two nights ago, as seen from Charlies Young Beach Park on Maui:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18181962=lg
K-5 IIs, DA 18-135 zoom

Re: My K-7 is dying

I now run a K5IIs and K3, the K5II is a great camera for sure, about
the only time I hesitate to use it over the K3 is when I know that I
will need the added buffer depth, otherwise I like it a bit more then
the K3. The K5 AF is OK, all its issues have been mentioned but they
are darned good value now, for the type of photography that I
typically see from you I doubt that it would present as significant

Re: Lens Thoughts (DA 17-70 f4)

2016-02-01 Thread Rob Studdert
Late to the party but unless you are dead keen to purchase a Pentax
branded lens then you might also consider the Sigma 18-50/2.8 (which
according to a few tests is a better performer than both the
equivalent Tamron and Pentax lenses) or the new C series Sigma
17-70/2.8-4. I have the Sigma 18-50/2.8 but since buying the Sigma
17-70/2.8-4 it's now on the block as it doesn't get used at all, the
17-70 is a very nice lens.

It doesn't give you a lot if you're using a computer with a full display
either. You have to know the story, because if you don't that web site
won't tell it to you. There is literally real no content, you need to
use Google to discover what it's all about.

The problem with it is that it gives you nothing if you're on a mobile device.
I'd quite like to read the stuff on the site - that's why I followed the link
in the first place.

I accept that small organisations without professional IT may not be able to do
responsive design (although these days it should be the default even on cheap/free
CMSes), but they haven't even given me the choice of a sub-optimal experience, just a
flat out "no, we won't let you see our site at all", and I can't be arsed to go
upstairs, switch on the desktop machine and go hunting for their desktop site.

The amazing thing is there are people actually making fun of the
photographer. The judges, if you can call them that, at Nikon are the
ones who deserve ridicule. I'm not sure he meant it as a joke, but it

I decided against that.

Really, I know the experience I want from e-mail, and the one Google

The fact that they allow me to use it the way I want to, even though it

I took my photo (darkside camera) in February, 2008... didn't have a lot

take a bus to brooklyn that doesnt exist anymore, shop on atlantic ave
and take a train back (or vice versa) - that way
paying only one senior fare if I do it fast enough (transfer free within
two hours) The other shots on the card with that

date show wet sidewalks and fog.

Funny thing is, I'd never seen photos from that perspective before...
and I found the spot by accident. Also possible I

walked across the Brooklyn Bridge that day...

ann (embarrased by my assertion that the view wasnt possible -

much of the buildings in the street and the enlarged building.. maybe
selectively enlarged the building in photoshop?
