thanks to all who commented. Bulent - I agree a little more on top

It's simple, take a block of plastic, drill and tap it for 3.2mm x0.5mm
pitch. drill two small holes in the side a bit past the end. Take an
electronic shutter release, cut the wires, strip them and insert them
until they are almost touching. When you press the trigger, it will
complete the connection between the two and it will work with your camera.

Silly... Either I miss some kind of a pun thread or continuation

least) that will release the shutter via IR port...

Speaking of that mill from which some say they run... I've recently
bought a wireless Qi charger for my cell phone. It was like less than
USD 4 from AliExpress... If I did not tell you - I doubt that even
with close inspection you would be able to tell it apart from the
original Samsung piece of kit. Sturdy, same font, good build, etc...
Works like a charm, by the way...

Re: Friday For Sale/Give Away and Pulling the plug

2016-02-21 Thread Boris Liberman
Thank you for understanding, John.

I am now actually a bit on a fence... I've realized that Sony A7
(whatever variety), being a FF camera will necessarily mean that
quality lenses will be big, especially zooms. Also, the reviews on
that Vario Tessar are extremely mixed and I don't want to buy into a
system with non-OEM lens from the start.

So, I am leaning towards Olympus OMD EM-1 and their Pro 12-40/2.8
zoom. I think that it should cover 90% of my needs. It is however
small and light indeed, compared to most APS-C or FF cameras. The
reviews have been for most part very good.

As well, on my way I've stumbled upon Ming Thein site - very
interesting. And Steve Huff's site is also very pleasant to read.
Subscribed to both.

I think that I will keep the list post of my oncoming gear adventures.
At worst it may give you a chuckle. At best we can even have some
discussion about it, though I certainly realized that K-1 preoccupies,
occupies and also postoccupies the minds :-).

Hi!

I have had the most unfortunate acquisition so far. I bought DA* 16-50 off
PentaxForums. The seller
indicated that the SDM motor did not work and that the lens was converted to
screw-driven AF. Upon
arrival, it appeared that the lens does not rotate past approximately 0.7 m
mark on focus scale.

I took it to Pentax Israel and USD 375 later I have a lens that kind of focuses
somewhere. However,
the focusing range is now fully accessible, so to say. So I took it for a walk.
It seems that it
also has optical problems that I cannot quite describe. But ultimately, it is
not sharp except maybe
at portrait distances in the middle of the frame.

I am giving this lens away to any one who wants to take it apart or who needs
some spare parts -
mount, SDM motor parts, whatever. If you feel like paying me any money for it,
it would be very
generous on your part. I'll ship it cheaply with registered air mail, of
course, not with expensive
EMS.

Now, that I have paid money and visit to Pentax Israel, it is clear to me that
I cannot have Pentax
as my primary gear because I cannot reliably repair it even with rather
expensive service that I
have here.

Finally, you know, I also have felt real pain in my wrists today during this 2
hours photo walk that
I had. So, upgrade to K-3 or K-1 is out of the question.

I will be buying one of Sony A7 series cameras (I have yet to decide which one)
and that 24-70/4
Vario Tessar lens for starters. Then I'd buy some adapters to use my K-mount
50/1.2, 77/1.8 and
Leica mount
35/2.0 and 25/2.8. This should in fact be quite enough for most of my needs.
Ricoh GXR will come in
very handy as well.

So, in the very near future I will be offering for sale moderately used K-5
with original grip,
spare battery and magnifying eye piece.
Sigma 24-60/2.8 full frame lens which is very good optic except typical Sigma
color balance. Also I
will be offering Sigma
17-70/2.8-4.5 (screw driven version) and Metz 50 AF-1 flash unit. As well,
assortment of filters,
Pentax lens pouches and so on.

Please contact me off the list. Of course, I will have to get new gear before I
send out my old
gear, so I can have continuity of my favorite hobby.

By the way, if you have any of Sony A7 series cameras that is in really good
state that you would
want to replace with Pentax K-1, I would gladly buy it from you.

Alas.

it is just catering to consumer fears, the way marketers have always done; i

the shockproof thing is funny because SD cards have such a high

shock, such as hammer blows and explosions, so i think it would be smarter

the X-ray thing is to tap into latent paranoia about airport scanners

Re: Can someone explain to me SD card speed ratings?

2016-02-21 Thread Mark C
I care because I do stacked macros in the field, which involves taking
several images while shifting the focal point. I usually don't exceed
the buffer limit for one sequence, but a fast card helps in two ways.
First, I usually wait for the buffer write to the card before starting a
new sequence. With a slow card that can feel like an eternity,
especially if the subject is transient (bug likely to fly away) and I
want a second run at it. Second - in those cases where I do exceed the
buffer limit a fast card is still workable, while a slow card is not.
It's less of an issue with stationary subjects but still results in
spending a lot of time waiting for the red card access light to go off.

Slow cards are no problem in most situations were getting a lot of shots
in sequence is not a priority. I pulled my slowest cards out of my bag
and use them for studio stacked macros since that is a slow process
process and the slowest card can keep up. But if you are shooting a lot
of images in a fast pace, card speed matters.

Actually - write speed matters. AFAIK, the only drawback to read speed
is slower downloads to your PC, and that I can live with.

c. I don’t know why I should care.

Really, I don’t know why I should care. I have reluctantly assumed that all
this kerfluffel about video speed in fact relates in a somewhat linear fashion
to what I do care about which is how fast still images move from the internal
camera buffer to the SD card in the slot. But I have also assumed that the
buffer-to-card process has a lot to do with the camera’s firmware and maybe not
so much to do with any limitations of the card. Is there anything anyplace that
tells us what the minimum necessary “speed rating” for SD is for a given
camera? Specifically, newer large-datafile cameras like the K-5, K-5ii, K-3,
K-3ii, K-1, 645D, 645Z shooting still images and not movies…

I recently added a couple of 32 gig memory cards. I compared San Disk
Extreme Pro and San Disk Extreme. Both are USH-1. Both are marked "HC-1
U3 C10." The Pro is marked "95 MB/S" and the Extreme is marked as "90
MB/S." It seemed like their specs were very close - but then looking at
max write speed I saw that the Pro is rated for 90 MB/S while the
Extreme is rated for only 40. The rate stamped on the cards themselves
is the read speed.

So - the Extreme Pro is actually 2x as fast for what matters (write
speed). But the ratings looked to be practically identical.

I am having a hard time telling the difference between the extreme plus and the
extreme pro. Their naming system is complete bafflement, which is probably
their goal.

Re: K-5ii vs K-3 focus comparisons

I've found my K3 and K5 are pretty much the same in regard to how quickly they
lock on in bright light, but the k5 sometimes confirms but then misses. That
seems to happen in fluorescent light. In extremely low light the K3 is
considerably better.

Re: Can someone explain to me SD card speed ratings?

2016-02-21 Thread Stanley Halpin
From the helpful link Cotty provided and discussion here and other reading, I
have concluded:

a. Higher numbers are “better” for values of better ranging from -50mbs
to +50mbs, more or less.
b. The main concern is with read or write speed when streaming video.

Sony versus Pentax informal comparison

2016-02-21 Thread Larry Colen
I photographed a friend's music video shoot yesterday. Afterwards, one
of the videographers and I got to geeking out on comparing camera's and
such, walked into the driveway and aimed our cameras at the house across
the street. All of the photos are hand held, at f/2.8, ISO varies
between 16,000 and 20,000 shutter speed between .25 and .33 Seconds.
Photos that were obviously bad were discarded from the test.

The first six frames (with DSC in the names) were shot with a Sony
mirrorless full frame alpha7S-II. Google tells me the body sells for
around $2800.

The next six frames (LRC26...) were shot with my Pentax K-3, APS DSLR,
you can pick up the body new for about $650

The last five frames (LRC56...) were shot with my Pentax K-5ii APS DSLR,
which you can still find new for about $550

The full resolution photos are posted at:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157664757248072

In theory, you will eventually be able to see them with exif data at:
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157664757248072

In the meantime, this may be an easier way to see them all:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157664757248072/

Unfortunately, I didn't notice that the K-5 was focusing on the truck,
rather than the house. Joe, however was blown away that my Pentaxes
would autofocus in that light.

Note that after posting them, I noticed that they weren't processed
quite the same, so I'm re-uploading the Pentax photos, processed a
little brighter. I also did not apply lightroom noise reduction to them.

Re: Photo Processing On An Older Laptop

2016-02-21 Thread Mark C
What I noticed is that it would partially install updates that which
would need a reboot to complete, try and fail to install any subsequent
update that was dependent on the pending ones, then reboot and start the
process over again. Ultimately it managed to get things sorted out though.

The original install always shut off the USB ports when updates were
downloaded and pending installation. Thankfully that behavior is now
gone. It was damn annoying but I assumed it was intentional.

Vista made a list somewhere of all the updates that were available at
the time you began installing updates. You can have hundreds of updates
you still need to install, but Micro$oft hasn't released any new ones
that weren't previously on Vista's Windoze Update list.

Also, my experience with Vista is that it chokes when you let it try to
install too many updates at once.

It will download 32 updates, but 30 of the installations will fail.
Seems like maybe because the 3rd update it tries to install needs
something from the 20th update on the list, and once the 3rd craps out
none of the others is going to install.

I ended up having to go to "select which updates to install", sorting
the list by date and only installing the oldest ones. Depending on their
sizes, you might be able to do 5 or 6 at a time.

Ken Rockwell is very highly thought of by the R&D boffins at Pentax Towers in
Ulan Bator. They even named a camera after him:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_K-r

Here's a picture taken in the Tripod Research Field of one of their apprentice
scientists thinking about Ken. Her headgear is interesting - it's a type of hat
called a Koh-Ti and is considered a delicacy, nibbled only on the most special
occasions.

Here's a photo from their Advanced Projects Laboratory of a new design
suggested by Ken for a digital aperture stimulator:

Alastair - You'll like this one betterthen - :-) as in thisone I'm
making the point about the two cats..
(posted to facebook pretty much expressly for the owner of the cat whose
photo is on the wall. But I

think the photo I posted here first is better overall.

https://annsan.smugmug.com/The-KItty-Corner/Ashley-ultimate-alpha-tabby/i-D4nj222

I disagree with you on the crop on the one below - I croppeda bit on the
right to get the pull cord of the
blinds out of the photo and a tad off the bottom to keep the proportions
the way I like 'em.
I had looked at it in Elements with a tighter crop and didn't like it..
geometry works better for me

as it is.

I was using flash fill and in TAV mode ... left arrow once to see
another shot just before.

backstory - this is in my bedroom, where there is an AC that takes up a
lot of space on the
window sill (had a smaller one before with a "window" next to it) the
newer AC was messing up what used to be her favorite view.. so I
rearranged a fewstorage pieces and made her a little shelf.. the
flowered fabric is covering the AC...

using before. It has literally spent days downloading and applying

downloaded...
