Re: K1 price in Australia

2016-02-22 Thread Bipin Gupta
What can we say about Australia and Australian Greedy Sellers mate?

That is AUD 700 over - outrageous.

And if you go by the trend for the Pentax K20D to the K-3 II street
prices fall by more than half.

The K-5 IIs fell to just USD 320 (minused all the Free stuff) form the
MSRP of USD 1200!!!

So for me the wait for the Black Friday / Cyber Monday / Boxing Day /
Xmas / New Year Sale is not too distant,
even up to circa 2017. By which time all the bugs would have been eradicated.

Good Luck mate.
Regards.

Re: Playing with panorama and HDR

2016-02-22 Thread Alan C

That's an impressive scene, Larry, but it has some severe exposure
challenges - the bright yellow lights at the left & the sombre blue lights
at the right. IMHO the bridge on its own is the best part. I have never
tried HRD so I don't know how that affects it.

I'd guess it's a Ford, probably an early '80s version of their 5-liter

maybe from a 5.0 Mustang. Ken Waller can probably say for sure. I
doubt anyone would have discarded it. It's worth a fair amount just as

Re: Can someone explain to me SD card speed ratings?

2016-02-22 Thread David Parsons
The reason you should care is because even when shooting stills, the
camera still has to write data to the card. If you've ever taken a
couple of pictures quickly and had to wait several seconds to be able
to review the pictures, that's the card holding you back.

And on the off chance that you ever decide to shoot a video, slower
cards will time out faster and the camera is absolutely useless until
the data is cleared out.

of spares so that I don't have to erase the cards until I'm done
processing, certain of my backups etc.

I went to look at them online and they are variously rated with
Class 10, UHS-1, U1, U3. 80Mb/S max write speed, 10 Mb/S min write
speed and so forth.

Is there a clear concise description of what to look for in an SD
card for photographic applications?

Related question: specific recommendations for ones to look for,
ones to avoid, and particularly good deals.

If I want it in manual focus, I'll take the Samyang discount. I'd like
those lenses in autofocus. Especially since for some braindead reason
astrotracer won't take the focal length off the manually entered one

I'd also love a fast, weather sealed 30ish f/1.4 lens.

I would imagine that the potential problems would be that Samyang
would be nervous about opening their komono to Pentax. Similarly,
Pentax might not be wild about opening the komono on their weather
sealing to a low-cost competitor like Samyang. These problems are
probably exacerbated by the fact that Samyang is Korean and Ricoh is
Japanese.

Pentax could simply buy the uncoated optics from Samyang, coat and
assemble them in a WR package.

I wonder how much tooling and bulking up the Limiteds would need to be
manufactured in WR? Right now, I believe they can go into production
with the same process as before, except for the new coatings.

Everything, in my opinion. They are the most unreliable gadgets ever
invented, especially when you're working off a tripod while trying to
concentrate on capturing a particular moment and trying to line up the
damn thing with the IR receiver.

The moment you want to capture arrives, you press the button on the
release... press again ...press again... nothing! You take your eye
away from the viewfinder to concentrate on lining up the remote and
eventually it fires - but the object you want to capture is already in
the next county.

You might have guessed. I loath the things.

Anyway - most manufactures seem to agree and are building wifi apps that
allow use of a smartphone instead. Much better!

Please check my math regarding lenses

2016-02-22 Thread Larry Colen
I've been thinking, for low light work, about the Sigma 18-35/1.8 versus
the Pentax/Tamron 24-70/2.8.

With the crop factor of 1.5x, in their native modes, the two lenses have
approximately the same angle of view.

My understanding of depth of field is that you get approximately the
same depth of field at 27 mm at f/2.8 as you do at 18mm at f/2.0.

In other words, to a first order approximation, with a "one stop larger
sensor", and stopped down by a stop the 24-70 will have *close* to the
same angle of view and depth of field as the 18-35.

In order to shoot at the same shutter speed, stopped down by a stop, you
will need to increase the ISO sensitivity by a stop. When you do this,
your per pixel noise increases by about a stop (3dB) and your per pixel
dynamic range decreases by about a stop. However, you have twice the
number of pixels (area of silicon) to use, so that when you process your
photo to the final size, your effective noise and dynamic range will be
approximately the same.

In short, when the dust settles, and you look at the final images, my
guess is that the results with the two lenses will be very close,
despite the Sigma being 1.3 stops faster.

Note, that in about a month, someone could actually put this to the test.

If my hunches are reasonably accurate, then the differences between the
two come down to second order differences, that the Sigma is 1.3 stops
(4dB) faster, the Tamron has a 2.5 (about 1.3dB) greater range, size,
cost and weather sealing.

Re: Extremely disappointed: K-1 does not appear to work with ...

2016-02-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
IR releases are sometimes unpredictable in bright sunlight. RF (WiFi and
otherwise) releases have more range and are less effected by ambient
conditions, but do require power. Mechanical cable release can impart a small
amount of vibration to the camera and can be sticky in operation.

Most wired remote releases are passive, can be used for long delays without
incurring battery drain, and transmit minimal to no vibration to the camera.

Re: Can someone explain to me SD card speed ratings?

2016-02-22 Thread Ken Waller
FWIW, I recently purchased another SanDisk Extreme 32GB to augment an
exsting card I purchased with my K3. Both are marked HC1. the older card is
rated 45 MB/s, speed class 1 with the newer card marked 90 MB/s, speed class
3.

Haven't done any objective tests but I haven't noticed a any significant
difference in write speedhooting just stills.

BTW - I've used only SanDisk since my *istD and have never been let down.

My own two cents is that you really have to research the detailed specs on
the card you want to buy, paying attention to the actual write speed. The
ratings and classes are so broad that cards with seemingly identical
ratings can have significantly different performance.

I recently added a couple of 32 gig memory cards. I compared San Disk
Extreme Pro and San Disk Extreme. Both are USH-1. Both are marked "HC-1 U3
C10." The Pro is marked "95 MB/S" and the Extreme is marked as "90 MB/S."
It seemed like their specs were very close - but then looking at max write
speed I saw that the Pro is rated for 90 MB/S while the Extreme is rated
for only 40. The rate stamped on the cards themselves is the read speed.

So - the Extreme Pro is actually 2x as fast for what matters (write
speed). But the ratings looked to be practically identical.

I looked very carefully at the cards after getting burned buying a couple
16 gig Sony cards, also rated HC-1 U3 C10 and listed as 40 MB/S. Reality
is a fairly slow 10 MB/S write speed. Not good when shooting in HS burst
mode on the K3.

I can see that when I get a K-1 I'm going to need some more memory cards.
I'll want two to keep in the camera, and (at least) a couple of spares so
that I don't have to erase the cards until I'm done processing, certain
of my backups etc.

I went to look at them online and they are variously rated with
Class 10, UHS-1, U1, U3. 80Mb/S max write speed, 10 Mb/S min write speed
and so forth.

Is there a clear concise description of what to look for in an SD card
for photographic applications?

Related question: specific recommendations for ones to look for, ones to

Re: Roadside engine

2016-02-22 Thread Ken Waller
From what I see it's a Ford small block engine - 289/302 or 351 cubic
inches. In the 351 version it was commonly called a Windsor to differentiate
it from the Cleveland version which had significantly different architecture
than the Windsor - most importantly in the cylinder heads.

I doubt is a performance version.
I would have thought the depositor of the engine would have taken the chain
with them.

I'd guess it's a Ford, probably an early '80s version of their 5-liter V8.
The exhaust manifold suggests it was a high performance model, maybe from
a 5.0 Mustang. Ken Waller can probably say for sure. I doubt anyone would
have discarded it. It's worth a fair amount just as scrap. Cleaned up and
rebuilt it could be worth quite a bit.

Note: It could, of course, be another 6x7 format camera, but they each
have a slightly different frame outline and the corners in the shots
here look like those of my Pentax 67.

Mopar is the parts and service division of FCA, formerly Chrysler. It has
become, over the last 60 years or so, an unofficial synonym for the high
performance cars of Dodge and the long gone Plymouth brand.

The K1 is worth the money, thats not the issue. The issue is I dont have
an extra $2K lying
around to buy one this month. Of course, I could sell a few choice
lenses to buy the body, but
that kinda defeats the system. I just might have to wait for a price
break or buy used or go

for a second generation ff body. More waiting. It sucks to be poor.
