I'm considering retiring Dropbox in favour of Google drive.

Adobe Creative Cloud Photography Plan Price Increase...

2016-03-28 Thread Brian Walters
...at least for Australian subscribers.

I've just received advice that the new price will be $A11.99/month due
to "exchange rate fluctuations" which, I suppose, is reasonable given
that when the $A10 rate was set, the US and A dollars were near parity.
In fact, given the current exchange rate, it probably could have been a
bigger increase.

Interesting. I always enjoyed the 28mm lens on my MXen from years ago -
I found it to be a great all -purpose length. The speed is an issue, but
I tended to use the 15/4.5 mostly outdoors and stopped down. Even though
very sharp, not seeing the corners is a bonus IMO. It may well be that I
end up selling it to fund other voigtlander lenses. Time will tell.

This is one of the reasons I like the front knob for colour / mono
switching, and so many preset custom settings - a simple flick of the
top dial to go between preset choices. I can see right away that some of
those will be ISO settings.

Fun times ahead!

I probably wouldn't get the grip (unless they have re-established the slot for

Re: Photographic Directions

2016-03-28 Thread Boris Liberman
Hey.

Cool to know I am not the only person that recently went to m43 route...

Cotty, 15/4.5 is ill-suited for m43 simply because it is too slow and
EFL of 30 mm is not fun. Though it will certainly look extra cool on
that RF like Pen-F camera...

Despite that I chose Oly 12-40/2.8, which is fairly big in m43
standards, my friend has Pana 12-35/2.8 and it is positively tiny for
fast standard zoom. I do suggest you look at it. The way these lenses
(even zooms) are designed optically may surprise you. Given the small
sensor size, they optimize for best performance wide open. So, you
could end up having a very small physically, but very big optically
:-) zoom lens on your camera.

And as it was said before, your viewfinder being electronic will
double as rear screen, so you would have to do some menu delving to
make it certain that you *really* don't chimp :-).

It sounds as if what you want to do is possible with a Dropbox account.
You can share individual photos, or directories, set up your own
galleries with html pages or using prepackaged software such as
jallbum. It's free for a pretty good sized chunk of space on the
internet. Pictures aren't compressed they're treated like data, you
pick any size you want.

The only issue I see is the public sharing, it's not an actual photo
sharing site so there's no entry to public collections as such.

Re: OT: Museum of Modern Art Launches Free Course on Looking at Photographs as Art

2016-03-28 Thread Mark C
Very interesting observations - you have taken a deeper dive into the
course materials than I have.

On 3/28/2016 6:50 PM, Bob W-PDML wrote:

I think it would be a very interesting course. I don't really have the time
myself, but they have picked some interesting and accessible photos rather than
throwing people in at the deep (?) end of Art Photography.

Clicking through, you can get a nice large copy of Dorothea Lange's 'Migrant
Mother'. Seeing it again, I had a dig around and found this article from what
looks like an interesting book:
http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/316062.html

One thing that has always troubled me about analyses of this photo, which is
repeated in the article, is the comparison with paintings of the Madonna and
Child. Of course, Mary only had one baby when people were wandering around
Bethlehem doing all that painting (I guess little James came along a bit
later), although she is sometimes shown with Jesus and John the Baptist as
infants. I don't think she is ever shown with more than the two of them though.
So to me the comparison with Virgin and Child paintings has never been very
convincing.

There is, however, a very popular theme in art of a woman with three children. The
authors of the article refer to Bougeureau's painting(s) called Charity, but their
analysis is wrong. They write "The painting recasts the portrait of the Madonna and
Child as a poor woman with a baby and two other ragged children". This is a bit of a
howler. The painting is called Charity, and that's precisely what it shows - an allegory
of Charity, which is one of the virtues, the others being Faith and Hope.

Charity in traditional Christian theology is both the love of God, and the love
of your neighbour. Painters depicted this double nature as a woman suckling one
child while two or more others played around her, representing two or more of
the seven works of Mercy.

To me this is a much more interesting way of reading the photograph, whether or
not Lange herself was aware of this allegory consciously, because the FSA
itself was a work of mercy. I'm rather surprised that the authors missed this.

Here are some other allegories of charity:

http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/glossary/charity

Here is Reynolds alluding to the theme in a flattering portrait:

https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/sir-joshua-reynolds-lady-cockburn-and-her-three-eldest-sons

Good old Bougeureau knocked 'em out like he was giving them away, as a google
for bougeureau charity will reveal.

Here are some more:
http://www.art-breastfeeding.com/rel2/caridad.htm

Compositionally, Lange's picture is at least the equal of any of these. It
would be nice if more people recognised the theme though. So If you do take the
course and the tutors try to fob you off with Lady Madonna, tell them to
Bougeureauff. Charitably.

infants. I don't think she is ever shown with more than the two of them though.
So to me the comparison with Virgin and Child paintings has never been very
convincing.

There is, however, a very popular theme in art of a woman with three children.
The authors of the article refer to Bougeureau's painting(s) called Charity,
but their analysis is wrong. They write "The painting recasts the portrait of
the Madonna and Child as a poor woman with a baby and two other ragged
children". This is a bit of a howler. The painting is called Charity, and
that's precisely what it shows - an allegory of Charity, which is one of the
virtues, the others being Faith and Hope.

Charitably.

the lens is not weather sealed, and living someplace that normally gets 40-60

It's probably the best album/gallery creation software available. It
used to be free but now costs about $40 for the current version although
the older (free) versions still work well. What I like about it is the
ability to customise the 'skins' so that you can create your own 'look'
to the generated galleries.

Jalbum is what I use to compile the PUG each month.

Well, the PUG meister does.

I have been using this a lot for sharing via web sites and have paid for

There are so many other options now such as Wordpress galleries or
sharing of maps on cloud drives.

Why RAW files should fit in a slide show is not clear to me.

I shoot so little in the studio these days that the battery grip will,
for me, almost certainly be one of those things that gathers dust on the
shelf. My BG-5 has enough dust on it that I had to wipe it to read the

However, I am hoping to have a semblance of a studio in the basement

Stan, I think you are very engaged in your photography. I used to be
and hoping to be again. I have a 645 and lens, a couple of 6x7, 67's a
bunch of lens of various ages. I'm hoping to trim all of that. I am
sure I am not going back to film, or a darkroom. Next time I move I
will downsize and all this stuff needs to go. I also have a Besler 45
enlarger, trays all kinds of stuff. I'm a slave to my possessions. I
tend them, protect them, and move them but I don't love them any more.

Thanks for your encouraging words. I was really impressed with the Gx8
but my sentimentality for Pentax left me wanting more. I think the K3II
is it. I going home to unbox it and take a picture. I'll post it.

Early on, first with the APS-C and then the 4/3 cameras there was much fuss
made about the trade-offs with the smaller sensors, and frequently mentioned
was that the smaller sensors in smaller bodies would have smaller lenses that
would make transportage so much easier… I guess that is true to some extent,
but I am not sure (operating from memory here and not pages of specs) that the

Back in the film days I played around a bit with weird photographic engines.
Never a Holga, but various TLRs, old folders, etc. For a while I had 2-3 Pentax

Not in the US (yet ...).  B&H have the K-1 at a shade under $1800;
The *ist-D on initial release cost $1695 (that's what I paid for mine).

Of course 2016 $$ don't buy as much as 2003 $$; taking that into
account means the K-1 is certainly cheaper in real-world terms.

Seeing Mark's post about getting his photographic act together has
spurred me on to some planning of my own.

These past 10 years or so, I've been so busy with work that I simply
haven't had much time to enjoy still photography like I used to. Anyone
running their own business will understand this - time is overwhelmingly
devoured by work. However as I approach a self-imposed date for
retirement of 2018, I want to get my photographic arse in gear and try
and re-establish my enthusiasm.

I recently eBayed my X-E1 and some other stuff and managed to accumulate
enough funding for some new gear. For various reasons I'm taking the
plunge and have ordered an Olympus Pen F - my first foray into the Four
Thirds market. Some would say it is photographically a dead end, but to
be honest the picture quality is good enough for me, and the appeal of
more compact lenses and cameras is strong. My ideal would be a couple of
small bodies with a prime on each: a wide angle and either a medium wide
or a medium telephoto depending. Not considering any zooms.

I quite liked the Fuji X-E1 and no doubt the X-E2 is better, and I was
seriously considering the X100T but the ability to change lenses is high
on the list for me - and manual lenses at that. Voigtlander make some
superb glass. I already have the 15/4.5 and while not fast, it's small
size will work well on MFT and give me an effective 30mm street lens. At
some point I will get the Oly 12/2 for wide and then I want a fast
portrait lens. The Voigtlander 42.5mm/.95 would be ideal but very
pricey, hence I wondered about the Pentax FA43/1.9 as that would work
well. Will see what funds allow in time. Meanwhile I have a nice example
of a K24/2.8 to play with on the Pen also. I've never been a huge fan of
the '50mm experience' but I plan to try and use it a lot to see if I can
enjoy it.

I have to say that the Pen F is sex on the end of a lens, and no doubt
the looks played a part in my decision, but apparently the original X100
had thousands of pre-orders based on nothing but the looks. The 5-axis
in cam stabilisation would be nice. Not bothered about things like
weather-sealing as I don't enjoy photographing in the rain. If I do,
cameras keep dry with me anyway. I'm not a fan of delving into menus to
change settings, so the more knobs I have to play with, the better. Love
the articulating rear LCD and ability to close it face-inwards to
protect the screen - something I cherished about the Epson R-D1
rangefinder camera. It discourages chimping - something I want to get
away from.

So there you have it. New direction here and we'll see what it brings.
Cheers all:-)

Re: Changes (aging) new beginnings

2016-03-28 Thread Stanley Halpin
Mark, one thing I have quite enjoyed about the Pentax APS-C cameras and lenses
is the size. And also the solid build. And the 1.5x crop factor. And the image
quality those times when I do my part to get things right.

Early on, first with the APS-C and then the 4/3 cameras there was much fuss
made about the trade-offs with the smaller sensors, and frequently mentioned
was that the smaller sensors in smaller bodies would have smaller lenses that
would make transportage so much easier… I guess that is true to some extent,
but I am not sure (operating from memory here and not pages of specs) that the
DA*50-135 is all that much more compact than the FA*80-200. In any case, I have
found the APS-C in general and the K-3 in particular to be very usable cameras.

Back in the film days I played around a bit with weird photographic engines.
Never a Holga, but various TLRs, old folders, etc. For a while I had 2-3 Pentax
645 bodies and a fairly broad range of lenses. (Last seen when I traded the
remainder of my kit to a list member for a K-10 IIRC). I found the 645 a very
comfortable camera to use.

So going on 2 years ago when Pentax introduced the 645Z I took the plunge. The
combination of K-3 and 645Z has been good to me. Each is a different tool for
different purposes, and having both available helps me slow down and think
about what I am trying to do.

When the K-1 was introduced I thought about the size and weight compared to the
K-3. But then I thought about the size and weight compared to the 645Z and
realized that the K-1 is yet another in a long line of reasonably compact
cameras. On its own, as a single camera system I don’t think I would be
bothered at all. Carrying the K-1 and 645Z as a two camera system, the way I
have been with the K-3 and 645Z, may however push the boundaries of
portability. We’ll see. For now I am visualizing a 2+1 system wherein I carry
K-1 and 645Z, my wife moves to the K-3 from the K-r she has been using, and I
grab the K-3 from her when I want the benefit of the 1.5x crop factor. [Note
that my current most used combination on the K-3 is the DA*50-135 + HD 1.4x
teleconverter.]

I can’t predict which one or two or three cameras I might still be using a year
from now. But I am sure that if I ultimately fallback to the K-3 I will have
few regrets. It is a wonderful camera. I look forward to seeing your results
with it.

I was just thinking the same thing. Accounting for inflation, the *ist-D was
actually a good bit more expensive!

And I, too, still have my *ist-D. I still use it to “wake up” my old SDM

Christine - I will register a dissenting opinion. Of your samples, I thought
the next-to-last construction shot was the best. I could see it being used as
the cover of a brochure or project report.

I have done very little so far. Mostly played with SilverFX, looking at presets
that are said to provide the look and feel of B&W films of a bygone era. I
guess I don’t have enough nostalgia, most of the effects make me realize how
nice it is to use digital and not struggle with limitations of film!

Not sure what the differences are in our setups. I have had no issue moving DNG

Re: Photographic Directions

2016-03-28 Thread P.J. Alling
What most reviewers I've read have found most objectionable about the
new Pen F has been it's continuous auto focus. That doesn't seem to be
something that will bother you as only one lens in your projected lens
kit is native m43, so that's obviously not an issue for you.

The major drawback I see is that adapted 35mm SLR lenses such as the K24
and FA43 won't be quite so compact when an adapter is in the mix. Too
bad the 43 limited in Leica S mount is made of unobtainium, as it would
still be compact on the Pen.

On 3/28/2016 6:12 AM, Steve Cottrell wrote:

Cheers all :-)

I do see your point and how this will work for you.

For myself, those same points make me wonder more about the K-1. I fully
agree that the latest lenses designed to go with full frame are likely to be
better. I cut back my lens collection a while back, but I still have a
number of lenses from my film days that could be used whilst I save up. I
get to use a Nikon D800 from time to time, and I can't say the larger camera
or heavier lens combination is an issue - for me. Of course it depends on
what you are doing; up until about 18 months or so ago, most of the time I
was carting about a tripod as well as a camera bag for landscapes, but now
I'm trying to shoot more street and urban, so a K-3 and a smaller lens is
ideal. A K3 with a 40mm pancake lens fits in my coat pocket.

Lightroom I'm finally getting to grips with, but I'm struggling with
Elements (13) at present. I think the K-1 is fractionally cheaper than I
paid for my *ist D.

No doubt the folk here will tell us what we are missing when they have the
K-1 in their hands.

one day I will give the full frame a try. The K-1 is really what got me
excited. K-3II seems to be the K-1 just a little smaller. I can see
myself toting it around. It is not the camera so much as the
camera/lens combo in full frame.

The K-1 with the 70-200 is a great setup and I almost pulled the
trigger on the lens. After watching lot of youtube stuff and seeing the
size of the full frame gear side by side to alternatives I realized it
was not to be at this time.

I certainly don't regret buying the K-3ii. I also started to take pictures
every day on the first of January this year, without fail; I've already
braved the high wind and rain today to take some. I'd like to say that I had
some grand plan, but the truth of the matter is that I needed to force
myself out every day to exercise and deal with some back issues (successful
so far), and also because it's pointless owning such a camera and not using
it. The next purchase is another 4TB hard drive, as the smaller drive I use
day to day is almost at capacity, as a result of daily photography.

I do regret not pre-ordering a K-1. From what I've seen and read, it is
pretty much exactly what I would have wanted from a full frame camera. I'd
also feel confident about the purchase being right first time, whereas some
cameras that are new get recalled to get things fixed - isn't the Nikon D750
(certain batches?) on a second recall?

Photographic Directions

2016-03-28 Thread Steve Cottrell

Cheers all :-)

I imagine it's where they keep all the dangerous modern art that nobody
 understands.

Chiaroscuro, texture, intersection of thirds, horizontals, verticals,
brickwork, a cross, interior-exterior, metaphor, sgraffito, contrast,
balance - it's got the bloody lot. If only it had a puppy or a kitten, it
could be in the gallery, not wasting everyone's time outside.
