It didn't for me. That's why I bought WinX. I said 35 titles, forgetting that six or eight of those were television series with 24 to 72 episodes each. It is indeed a tough walk, particularly because you walk on the same path as the donkeys, who leave a lot of little surprises for the unwary hiker. I first visited Santorii 20 years ago, by which time they had installed a cable car as an alternative to the donkeys. The trail and the cable cars take you to the main town -- Fira. We took a bus from the new port on the South end of the island to Oia, the most picturesque and colorful town, located in the North. One also takes the bus to get to Akrotiri, the archaeological site where they are still digging out the village buried by volcanic ash 3,600 years or less. Re: OT: DVD ripper recommendations?
Handbrake is decent on OS X, but not great. It fails to rip about half of the titles I've tried using it, where WinX DVD for Mac has only failed to rip two titles (out of 35) so far. Re: One of my photos in the local paper
Larry, I had my photos published a few times in one of Houston newspapers that has distribution in main Texas metropolises. Every time there was some issue: once they forgot the credits. I've noticed that in the online version that appears before the printed one and called them. They fixed that online and in print. The other time they messed up the printed version of the photo almost beyond recognition. At that point I wished the had forgotten the credits. They didn't even bother to apologize, just shrugged their collective shoulders: "things happen". Since that I am very reluctant to give them my photos. BTW, when I was giving my photos, I specified explicitly how the credit should sound, as I've seen them not being very careful with photo attributions. Interesting enough, after that they became more attentive to how they credit photos, at least those that come from their own editorial team. Best one I've found (and I use it extensively for exactly those purposes) is WinX DVD Ripper for Mac (http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper-for-mac/). I had a step down transformer some years ago for some HF amateur radio equipment; I can't remember if it was a Drake TR7 or some Collins equipment. Worked well enough. The bigger issue is cost to ship to the UK. I've been put off by a cost of, say US$25 to buy it (whatever 'it' may be), and the equivalent of US$60 to ship it and then get hit with customs charges and an £8 handling fee from our postal carrier. I occasionally buy things from the far east, which are cheap and just drop through the letterbox some many weeks later, but anything from the US or Canada to me is always delayed until I pay the letter detailing the customs and handling fees (known as the ransom note in this house) before they will deliver. As an aside: I once bought an amateur radio transceiver form a club in New York (wasn't ever sold in the UK). It took 48 hours to get to the UK, and a further six weeks, from the warehouse stickers, touring the UK before the ransom note came, finally being delivered from where it had originally landed in the UK.
