Those are very impressive numbers for non-native speakers.

There is what I believe to be a more accurate test, relying on honesty, here.
It also discusses the methodology used, and feeds the results back into itself
- it is part of an academic research project.

http://testyourvocab.com

I do better on this one than on the one Mike posted, therefore I consider this
one to be definitive, professional and accurate.

Any half-decent electronics (TV, Computer, Sound) repair shop shold be able to
do it for you for quite a small cost, I would think.

The only problem is finding said "half-decent electronics ... repair
shop" in today's throw-away economy.

There's a guy here in Raleigh I can take old tube guitar amps to and he
does a tremendous job. But the same block-busting condo development
that's going to displace one of the two decent independent camera stores
is going to take down the building his shop is in, and he doesn't know
where he's going to fine another location he can afford to rent.

Well for a while Voigtlander did offer some lenses in PK mount. I
remember a pdml member way back who tested the legendary 135 A* 1.8
Pentax lens against a Voigtlander equivalent, and the results looked
better with the Voigtlander. He was from Australia. Don't remember

Bob, just out of my never ending curiosity, I've taken the test that
you indicated. I got my result at 21,400 words, which puts me just
above the bottom level of native English speakers (said to be between

This is extremely fascinating. I've bookmarked this page as I am going

Many thanks!

Peter, I apologize for posting a link to Russian web site, however
this is what it says:

1. Laowa ZERO-Distortion sales are starting in August
2. Lens covers 24x36 mm
3. Pentax mount will be supported
4. 16 elements in 10 groups, including 2 aspherical and 3 ED elements
5. Manufacturer claims absolute absence of any kind of distortion...

Re: PESO - A Solitary Grass

2016-07-13 Thread Jack Davis
This got by me somehow.(?)
Nice, but believe I would like it a bit better as a vertical.
'Prox 1/3 of the frame cropped from the left side.
Feel it would be somewhat simplified and cleaner.

This is really nice... I should not let Olympus overshadow my little
lovely Ricoh. Thanks for the reminder, Bulent.

I've Pentax SMC FA 77/1.8 to go with it in the same range of focal
lengths... Should find a way to shoot some portraits of my girls...

Re: Amazon Prime Day VISA30 SNAFU

2016-07-13 Thread Larry Colen

Larry Colen wrote:

There are supposed to be a bunch of awesome deals today on Amazon Prime.
Is there any way to find them easily, specifically searching for (for
example) Pentax mount lenses, or Pentax hot shoe speedlights?

I won't bore you with details of my travails right now but I got an
email notification of a promotion $30 off any order of $150 or more
using my Chase amazon rewards card. In the process of shopping I
realized that I needed two more large hard drives as both my working
drive and my secondary backup were close to full. When the dust
settles, we're talking a $600 order, and at checkout, I find out via a
terse error message that the discount code has been expired, over 12
hours early, and possibly just a few minutes before I tried to check out.

After spending much time on the phone yesterday with multiple calls to
both Chase and Amazon, not even getting any sort of courtesy credit, I
cancelled my Amazon rewards card. My new Costco card gives me as much
cash back, it doesn't have to be at Amazon, and Costco is much less evil
than Amazon. Actually, Costco seems to be pretty darned ethical while
Amazon competes with Walmart in levels of evil.

This morning, the order that I had made, using the rewards card one last
time to collect $120 in rewards, wouldn't go through. They had not
charged the card when I made the order. I have 30 days to collect my
rewards after cancelling, but there is no way to collect them. Another
call to Amazon, then to Chase, with at least one transfer to someone in
the right department, I at least got the $120 applied to my account.

and I could see your point better.
You are right.
Will print it like that. (Most likely a cyanotype).

I got that backwards anyway, it should have read "non DSLR version", not
"DSLR version". If the Russian site is correct, it will be nice to see
high quality third party lenses available for K mount.

Peter, I apologize for posting a link to Russian web site, however
this is what it says:

1. Laowa ZERO-Distortion sales are starting in August
2. Lens covers 24x36 mm
3. Pentax mount will be supported
4. 16 elements in 10 groups, including 2 aspherical and 3 ED elements
5. Manufacturer claims absolute absence of any kind of distortion...

Based on what I can see, which is admittedly not much, I think not. Most
lenses that are made in both mirrorless and DSLR versions simply have the
extra empty space needed for the proper lens registration grafted onto the
DSLR version, (look at the difference in any Samyang lens sold in Sony e,
Fuji X or M4:3, and K or F mount, the mirrorless mount lenses are
considerably longer). These Voightlander lenses would probably have to be
completely redesigned.

One of the daylilies in our garden collection. Shot at noon just as
the sun was obscured by a conveniently placed cloud.

645Z, 90mm/2.8 macro, f/4.0, 1/125th sec, 100 ISO.

Key light: Paul Buff Einstein at lowest power setting, with an 8"
silver reflector with 30 degree grid, feathered just over the top of
the flower from camera-left. Using a Vagabond Mini to power it.

Fill: Sol with a cumulonimbus softbox.

I think that the quiz should also take the time you take to answer into

Mounting a phone or tablet to a camera? Also tripod heads

2016-07-13 Thread Larry Colen
A lot of times when playing with astrotracer, I can't exactly see what
I'm aiming at with my bare eye, and particularly not through the
viewfinder. I've gotten close by using the google skymap app on my
phone, holding it up to the back of my camera and using that to aim
close enough to see the object in images and dial things in tighter.

I've got an adapter for mounting a green laser to my hot shoe. I'd love
to have something similar for holding my smartphone. Does anyone know
of something existing?
Mind you what I'd really like is to be able to install google sky map on
my camera and use its gps, accelerometer and display for aiming.

In a similar vein. fine adjustments using a ball head are a titch
touchy. My old manfrotto three axis heads allowed me to adjust one axis
at a time, but I can't find any of those in Arca Swiss. Are there any
decent three axis arca swiss heads that will hold a large lens and not
cost several hundred dollars?

I mentioned here before that the week started with the power being out

I think that may be the high point of good times for the week.

Tuesday I spent the entire day - 9am to 5pm - trying to set up a user
account with Citibank so that I can pay the bill for the new Costco
Citibank Visa card online. When I did it for American Express, I think
it took me about 5 minutes. I don't think I ever had any problem with
American Express that took more than 5 minutes to resolve on the phone
(including hold time). The last thing I got from Citibank's level 2
support was that they don't know what's wrong, but there 17 other
people

in the U.S. are having the same problem.

They suggested maybe I should take my laptop to McDonalds & use their
public WiFi, or maybe use one of the computers down at the public
library to create the account.

Yesterday, was a war on fleas day, which I seem to be losing. Took the
cat to the vet to be bathed & boarded over night while I fumigated the
house with those "foggers in a can". Finally got back in at 10:00pm
last
night & still had to vacuum, change all the bedding and do dishes
before

I could get to bed.

Pinched a sciatic nerve somehow & could barely move by the time I gave
up last night. Used a heat pad overnight, and I can hobble around
reasonably well today.

Today, after I finished up housecleaning the aftermath of yesterday's
fumigation, I went & got the cat from the vet. She's got some residual
itching I guess, because even though she's all clean and sleek and not
shedding a bit, she's still scratching some. Probably will have to go
back to the vet to get medication for the itching until the scratched
spots heal up.

When I finally got around to turning on my computer this afternoon
(shut

them down while fogging the house) one of my NAS boxes won't connect.
Looks like one of the drives may be failing (if it hasn't already
failed

outright), but I think the fault may be the NAS box itself this time.

The NAS is set up as a RAID-1 mirror, so I should be able to recover
the

data from the good drive.

I downloaded software to allow EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 drives to mount on
Windows 7 and a program that's supposed to allow me to read the data
from the EXT formatted drive. The mount software sees the drive and
gives it a drive letter. Windows says it's not a recognized drive and
wants to format it. The Linux Reader software sees the drive, but so
far

it won't let me read the data.

I don't think there's anything on the "drive" that's not backed up
somewhere else, but I won't know for sure until I manage to read the
data & hopefully copy it over to a new backup.

They say trouble comes in threes, but I'm already up to 4 for the week
so I don't know what's going on.

touchy. My old manfrotto three axis heads allowed me to adjust one axis
at a time, but I can't find any of those in Arca Swiss. Are there any
decent three axis arca swiss heads that will hold a large lens and not
cost several hundred dollars?

There is what I believe to be a more accurate test, relying on honesty, here.
It also discusses the methodology used, and feeds the results back into itself

I do better on this one than on the one Mike posted, therefore I consider this

I've been AFL - don't ask - I'm back now :-)Dan wrote me off list

landscape oriented. I think if Mark were to produce the calendar on,
say, cafepress - or lulu (less expensive than Blurb) the easier format

is landscape-

Boris's Taking a Picture(41)
Ted's California Sunset (55)
Christine's Museum Shot (68)
Frank's The number you have Dialed (74)
Rick's Nos 111-113 (75)
Dan's Red Chinese photographer (79)

a lot of stuff happening in my personal life recently has occupied all
my energy - and I have little of it in this heat. Personally, I loathe
summer -

"it's so hot here in town, and the heat gets me down"

just for you worry warts - I'm in good health, lost 15 lbs in 5 months -
down to 130 lbs, great BP readings. ebay sucks so that is not making
me happy
and some sadness regarding friends - and slumping creatively so don't
feel up to commenting on photos of others or world affairs, OK?

so let me lurk for a while - when my summertime malaise goes away I'll
try to be more entertaining and helpful for now it is old movies and
words with friends

Paul, I'm probably one of the very few on this list that has met Gracie. I
met her at your wife's funeral and my wife and I found her to be a very nice
young lady, She didn't know us at all but she was very cordial with us and
seemed beyond her age. You are fortunate to have such a fine grand daughter.
Continue to cherish her. May I suggest you can still continue a long
distance relationship with her on facetime.

God bless you and Gracie Paul.

Subject: Gone

Grace arrived 11 years ago on a flight from Scotland to Detroit, via
Baltimore. It was an escape I had arranged, and I couldn’t breathe easy
until I saw Grace and her mother descending the escalator from the flight
deck. My wife and I met them and took them home. The next morning I got
down on the floor and talked to Gracie — and photographed her — and we
began to establish a powerful bond that included all manner of things,
including cameras. In the years that followed there were parties, trips to
the beach, an endless number of days at the park, games, meals, some
wonderful friends in the neighborhood and more. And through it all, Gracie
was my partner, and I documented it in photos, some 3,000 I believe. But
the end was always inevitable and yesterday it came to pass at 8:40 am as
Grace and her mother left for a new life in Houston, Texas. I had steeled
myself against the inevitable, but once their truck was out of site, the
tears flowed. Today hasn’t been easy, but I have learned about moving on,
and I’m working on that. I’ll be good, and I trust that Gracie will as
well. But I will love her deeply until the day I die.
