That's what I thought at first. Then I found a suitable alternative

PCB warns against trying this with their strobes. They specifically
mention it about Alien Bees and Einsteins, so I don't know if the
caution also applies to the White Lightnings. The warning is that
their dimmers are only designed for tungsten bulbs.

FYI ...

Those hot modeling lights are just part of the cost of doing business
with these strobes. I only burn myself once in a while now. :)

The brand new Alien Bees -- called DigiBees -- have built in LED
modeling lights. And they have many Einstein features too. They are
looking great spec-wise, though I have yet to see one in the flesh.

I remember when I first encountered the so-called "Birthday Paradox".
It was the typical introduction - our maths teacher asked our class

After he asked the first three or four people, and received widely
differing answers (but all with a very low guess) he asked me.
I suggested "100%", pointing out that our class contained two pairs

Yes, he would. In other exposures around the same time that day, there was
not only harshness, but also some distortion of the colors as seen by the
eye.

OTOH, given that this type of weather and light persisted through most of
my visit to New Mexico, it was probably better to have the worst of the
overbearing light at the point I was taking this image, rather than at the
pueblos or other more significant sites (although the light was troublesome
there as well). We stopped at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge for only 20
minutes, in the middle of a 9 hour excursion that included Chimayo, the
town of Taos and the Taos Pueblo.

A bit more info. While that 30W flood puts out 3000 lumens, and that's

Thanks Bruce. My guess was that if anyone had done this, it would have
been you. I ended up ordering a 50W version

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GPNXURA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8=1

https://photography.tutsplus.com/tutorials/strobes-or-continuous-lighting-whats-the-better-choice-for-you--photo-14549

However, here's hope. If you drag your shutter you can in fact mix the
two. Background light is one place where I have found that to work.
Usually I use it when mixing strobe with ambient light, but it works
just as well for any continuous light source, tungsten, CFL, LED,
video projectors, etc.

Yup, looking at them for background light, *possibly* rim. I can also
play with turning down the power on the strobe and taking advantage of
the inverse square law.

Worst case, I end up with a colored light to use at parties etc.

I also decided to try an experiment with an LED modeling light in my
strobe. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but the incandescents get
way too bloody hot, so I tried modding a 100W equivalent dimmable LED.
If it works, I'll put one in all of them.

So balance your ISO and aperture and strobe power settings to get your
strobes exposed right, then set your shutter speed to expose for the
background. A couple of passes around the settings will get everything
within useful range. You don't want your shutter speed too low or
you'll get funky rim shadows from motion blur from your subject.

Re: OT - 40%-millipede discovered (nice macro images)

2016-10-26 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Mark,

I am not sure if you were just teasing us, but this is actually a
perfectly correct use of "milli".
You are thinking about the unit prefixes (kilo, mega, and milli,
micro,...).
Here, it's a separate root "milli" from Latin "mille" - thousand.

Cf. Permille: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per_mille

Actually, according to M.-W., the word even exists in English:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mille

It is noteworthy that the word "mile" (distance unit) also comes from
"mille". In Rome, it was "thousand paces".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mile#Historical_miles

And I probably don't need to translate "mil pesos". ;-)

Cheers,

Igor
