Can I leave it up to you guys to sort out an itinerary, as we really have

to see the redwoods, so that might help the decision-making process. We're
happy to visit SF itself on a by-foot trip on the alternative day.

Subject: Bay Area meetup with the Coyle's

I haven't seen any discussion about meeting up with John and Jan this week.
I might not be able to drive at the track event on Thursday, so I might be
free then, but I have Friday blocked of to visit with them.

I'm also curious about their, other people's interest in seeing a bit more
of the bay area than just SF. My suggestion would be to head down the coast
from SF to moss landing with a possible detour to the redwoods in my
neighborhood, and meeting for dinner someplace in the South Bay or on the
Peninsula.
I'd be totally up for giving them a ride for at least half of the loop if
someone could get them from SSF/Brisbane/Daly City down the coast.
Maybe meeting up at Pigeon Point or Half Moon bay on their drive down.

Points of interest on that loop:
The new park at Devil's slide
Various parks and beaches down the coast:
Waddell Creek
Wilder Ranch
Davenport, sharkfin cove
Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Henry Cowell, Fall Creek, Castle rock or Big Basin parks

Innumerable wineries

There are often lots of critters to see at Moss Landing. John Francis seemed
to enjoy our visit a few weeks ago, where I got my best sea otter photos so
far.

Boomeria in the Santa Cruz mountains, where a teacher from my high school
used to let the students have big water battles and let them build a castle,
tunnels and a 2500 pipe organ http://boomeria.com/tour/tour.html
http://boomeria.com/tour/pipeorgn.html

Roaring camp, the steam train in Felton can also be worth a few minutes and
is next door to Henry Cowell state park.

In downtown Santa Cruz, Pacific Ave can be an entertaining blend of touristy
shopping and hippie buskers and street venders, and there is also the wharf,
boardwalk, and a few miles south the cement boat.

There are, of course, plenty of iconic things to see and do in SF, and
Marin, but they want to see some of the more unique bits of the Bay Area.

I have a Sigma EF500DG Super that I have used very rarely with the K-5
(the sensor being so good); but it has done well. The K-5's flash
features are well supported. My best results have been in slave mode
with the pop-up as the trigger. Getting the channels sorted out is a
bit of a pain (despite instructions translated from Chinese, via
Gaelic and Inuit), but it has worked very well.

This shot (from a photo booth at a church holiday party) was ISO 800,
1/90, f/4, Sigma flash bounced off a projection screen at camera left,
camera flash in controller mode:

The EF610DG Super is the current model.

You're going to need a really big opener for that can of worms.

It's my experience that it's harder to learn to get good results from a
flash, than it is to learn to use a camera. Once again I'll suggest the
book "Light, Science and Magic". I'll also suggest that if you can, you
will

want to get the flash off the camera and use radio triggers. The yongnuo
triggers are cheap and reliable. Unfortunately I have not had nearly as
good of luck with their speedlights. The YN560IV is an awesome manual
flash,

for about a month, until it stops working.

I had horrible luck with my fgz540, but other people have had better
luck. I
am curious about the fgz540-II. I've got a metz 58, and it's
serviceable.

If you don't need TTL, you may want to check out the lumopro
https://mpex.com/demo-lumopro-lp180-flash.html

Or their radio control version

The first snowfall of the season in southern New England, is usually
less than an inch, in fact usually less than a dusting. This would shut
most of Connecticut down, if we didn't have time to acclimate to the
snow, and we laugh at places that can't handle less than an inch of the
stuff.

These are some kind of cranes. I've no idea on specifics. As I wrote
just a moment ago, Israel happens to be a very busy hub of annual bird

The little village is interesting in a sense that it belongs to

community and surely should anyone come over, I'd be taking them to
that little restaurant we had our lunch in.

Re: Think tank thoughts?

2016-11-08 Thread Rick Womer
I am using a Think Tank Urban Disguise 40 (there are several sizes),
and I guess I've had it for 6-8 years. It's more or less "messenger
style." It has held up well, except for the non-slip side of the
shoulder strap (I substituted a black non-slip strap from
goodness-knows-what; it says "LLBean" on the buckle), and the elastic
in the stretch pockets on the ends.

My usual load is a K-5, 16-45, 50-200, and 10-17; though I have
occasionally added a 24-90, a few primes, a flash, and a K-7--which is
to say that it holds a LOT more than I can carry comfortably.

There is a backpack adapter for it (which I have) and it works very
well. I think backpack camera bags are a huge pain, because you have
to take the damned things off to get anything out. For transportation,
okay; for shooting, yuck.

Cheers,

Rick

Re: PESO: Watching me

2016-11-08 Thread Rick Womer
IIRC, the field of view is nearly 180 degrees. The fovea (area of
greatest sharpness on the retina) is way off-center so that it is
still engaged when looking ahead. I also recall reading that raptors
have the equivalent of 20/4 vision, and it includes UV.

That’s the combo I’m lusting for.

Meantime I get by with a Fuji XQI. Only one dial for shooting mode. Everything
else controlled from buttons on the back, which are programmable, and the
menus. No viewfinder, which I’ve gotten used to—except in bright sun. But I get
astounding images—to me anyway—with it.

Here's one from the state cross country championship here last weekend.

The X-Q1 was my “wide angle” lens for this occasion. I shot the races with my
K-5 and a DA 4-5.6/50-200 ED WR. Here’s one of my favorites with that combo
.

FWIW, the team I’ve been following were state champs in their division for the
third year running. All the kids are refugees. (Yes, I know, I’ve gone
off-topic here.)

Under The Canopy is my favourite. An interesting gallery.

Thanks Steve,

Actually, I am having an in-between period.
Working 3 days a week.
The days I spend at home did not turn out to be as productive as I imagined.
I have plans & dreams and.. I have my fears that they will remain like that!

Re: Advice on large format photography

2016-11-08 Thread Bulent Celasun
Collin,

Thank you very much for your detailed, informative advice.

A print size of 16x20 (say, 40x50 cm) is surely big enough for me.
That makes the whole idea of LF rather suspect especially since
I can have "some movement", when needed, with the GX680.

>My thoughts are then:
>First) 4x5. You'll be able to do medium format as well as sheet film.
>Not very heavy but holders can be bulky.

(Un)fortunately no 4x5 is available locally.. as yet!

>Second) Medium format will let you do everything a 4x5 will.
>More weight on the hardware side, less work in the darkroom.

Sounds logical... again...

>Third) 8x10. Make your time worthwhile and just print contacts.
>You'll not be disappointed.
>But you'll spend a bunch per shot so make 'em count.

This reminds me of -once again- "the price"...
Decreasing income & rising prices for a "hobby"...

Oh well..

...

I have a handful of (!) medium formats around and I find it difficult

Extremely difficult...
