Re: PESO: Neglect
It'd be nice to preserve it but hideously expensive and very difficult to do safely. And that's before you consider trying to bring it up to modern earthquake standards. What's left of the building is badly cracked and considered unstable which is why the perimeter inside the fence is so wide. Whatever the outcome it'd be nice to see some progress being made. I don't have a preference one way or the other. On a brighter note we also visited the great hall at the Arts Centre (the former university) which is built in the same neo-gothic style. The whole complex is being restored and strengthened and is looking pretty good so far. Cheers, Dave > On Dec 23, 2016, at 4:30 AM, Daniel J. The PUG archive is a fascinating tour through the past. What's interesting about the web is how it's a continually updated time capsule that one can consult any time. It's particularly fascinating to be able to go through the era during which photography made the transition from film to digital. When the PUG began in 1997 serious photography, even at the most basic amateur level, was a strictly analogue endeavour; digital cameras of the time were toys with hopelessly limited resolution and dynamic range. Look at those early galleries, made at a time when 400 x 600 pixels was a large online image (when the standard monitor had 600 x 800 resolution). I seriously hope there are good back-ups of the entire PUG kept because it's the kind of thing that will be of inestimable value to historians of future generations. ...and on that note I'd like to add that the PDML Photo Annual has similar value. I do wish we'd started it a few years earlier, so as to capture the height of the transition between film and digital (probably beginning with the Canon D30, which appeared in late 200/early 2001, and being "stick a fork in it" done by 2003 with the Pentax ist-D". But I doubt the print-on-demand publishing industry was quite up to speed at that time either. Still, we're planning on doing another Photo Annual for 2017. Re: OT: Service interruption
Murphy seems to be busy at this time of year ... Shortly after my main computer decided to stop working, my alternate system - a small, lightweight Dell XPS 13 - decided that charging its battery was too much trouble. This left me with an indicated three hours or so before I would be cut off from the internet :-( Somewhat later HP decided that, despite their quoted delivery time when I placed the order (and an assurance in the later shipping confirmation email) my order would not, in fact, be delivered before December 25th; it would instead be delivered on December 28th. Fortunately a quick Google search (using my wife's computer to preserve what little battery life remained on the Dell) suggested that I was by no means the first person to run into this problem, and the recommended solution was to power down & disconnect the battery to force the machine to reset itself. (Some folk suggested simply running down the battery instead, but that was not what Dell product support seemed to recommend). I'm somewhat reluctant to mess around with hardware (especially when poking around near components that don't take kindly to static electricity and the like), but I decided to give it a try. Fortunately I did have the somewhat uncommon tool needed to remove the notebooks's back cover (a Torx T5 driver, I believe), and a suitable Philips screwdriver to undo the battery retaining screws. As you might guess, since I'm able to get online again, I was succesful in getting the system to reinitialize the charging circuitry. Not only that - last night FedEx changed the expected delivery date for my new system back to today, and the current status shows that it is on a truck out to be delivered within the next few hours! I'm keeping my fingers crossed ... -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: And an annual happy birthday to everyone
Yeah, I understand all that part. It's the technical details that continue to elude me. Most of the social media I don't use really doesn't work very well unless you have a smart phone. I don't have one & I don't see that I need one. That might change, but not today. My latest cell phone has a camera. Verizon gave it to me "free" and cut the price of my service plan to get me to give up my old cell phone. I've taken a picture with it. I don't have internet or texting or all that other smart phone stuff on my phone. It's just a basic flip-phone I have so I can make telephone calls. It took me almost an hour on the phone with Verizon's help desk to get the photo from the phone to my desktop (email inbox). I could have solved the problem more quickly by just going home & getting a camera, then coming back to the location & duplicating the photograph (static subject). The there's facebook. I don't have facebook because I have a bad attitude. When it first came out, I was bombarded by people telling me I *HAD TO HAVE* facebook, which pushed one of my hot-buttons. I get stubborn. I *DO NOT* have to have facebook, and I won't. You can't make me, so I ain't gonna'! Plus, I can hardly make heads or tails of Google+, so why would I want another one I can't figure out. I understand email & I understand Flickr. I'm good. On 12/23/2016 1:07 PM, P. J. Re: Lens test from the 67 days
Those tests are based upon a 35mm 6mp sensor monochrome astro sensor. I think they are suspect. How can we know focus was perfect with each one with no live view? I think the 67 lenses should do a little better here. They might not be enough for a 36mp sensor, but they should be resolving more than 6mp on FF. If you extrapolate and enlarge the area to cover 6x7 that would indicate they are resolving less than 12mp if you had a 6x7 sensor since 35mm has a 2x crop factor. Apple supplies the Epson printer drivers. Go to the Apple Store and click the upgrades link. It should automatically check to see if you need them. Make sure also that you have the icc paper profiles and that Lightroom is controlling color. If you're set up to have the printer control color, you won't get good results.
