Re: Water your wiskey

2017-08-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
If the pipes (or the solder in the pipes, are causing high levels of lead
in the water, the amount in a "splash: of water added to whisky is a minor
concern, compared to the other uses of water for drinking, cooking, making
teas and coffee, etc. Even lead can be filtered out. I highly recommend
testing the water supply for lead and other contaminants, but not because
of the small amount of water used to enliven my whisky.

Heya Cotty!

A strapping lad! I was going to say ... if he gets much taller, he's going to
have difficulty walking through doorways! Last I saw him (2013?) he was already
taller than you, I think. Which means he's ginormous. ;-) But really: he's
filled out a lot since I last saw him, getting broader and more muscular. Ah,
youth!

Congratulations for him as well as you and Alma!

I'd hoped to get over for a visit this year, but there are only diminishing
chances that I'll get there around the end of the year now. I'm far too busy to
get out of town, it seems! So much for "relaxing in retirement", eh?

Onwards!

OT - Stefan Shooting Edinburgh

2017-08-23 Thread Steve Cottrell
Apparently I'm not allowed to post this in Facebook! But he didn't say anything
about me posting it on my web site and telling the PDML ;-)

Stefan's first solo job with Associated Press and he gets whisked off to
Edinburgh for the Festival and 2 days filming there with a reporter for a
middle eastern TV channel.

Just a pic from a proud dad. He's certainly grown a bit since his visit to
GFM

Re: OT: Water your wiskey

2017-08-23 Thread Darren Addy
Just one other thought regarding water and how it effects the taste of
what it is used with/in:

"Distilled water, as virtually all bottled water, is stored in cheap
plastic containers. Some have been known to leach methyl chloride, a
carcinogen, into the water and also gives off plastic tastes and
odors. Water has been called the universal solvent, whatever it
touches it will pick up. Distilled water being virtually 100%
contaminant free might leach plastic tastes into the water from the
inferior bottle it’s being stored in. Besides glass, consider buying
bottles made from Lexan that won’t give off any plastic tastes or
odors."
