Probably ought to suggest he at least *look* at Lightroom CC.

I don't use lightroom, so I don't feel like I'm trying to steer him

the most free online support for.

Yes it does, but and compared to a Photoshop or Lightroom it's a bargain
at a one time purchase of $99.99, and hay, it's on sale until Sept 4th
for 59.99, but there are other options that do basic photo editing for free.

No lever locks, but the Feisol ball heads have pretty large knobs. I'm
using a CB50D (load capacity 41lb) on my small tripod and their CB70D

Manfrotto ball heads made me swear off that type of head for a couple of

That's a tough question - I know the cats too well, so I see
what I expect to see. I'll give you a potted biography for
each of them, and see if that matches your impressions.

Anthony is an old cat (16). He is one of a litter of 4 kittens
that we fostered. Unfortunately they were almost three months
old when we got them, and had been living a semi-feral life.
By that age they are pretty much set in their ways.
When he was a kitten he was always hiding somewhere - behind
a box, in between the cushions on the sofa, under a chair, ...
For most of his life he didn't really interact much with us.
In the last year or so, though, he's been having some digestive
issues, and needs to be fed a special diet. He's got used to
coming up and demanding food, and seems to have forgotten that
people were scary - he will lie beside me on the bed, and has
even settled down on my lap on a few occasions. He still has
more than a few doubts about my wife, though.

Alex is my wife's cat. He will allow me to stroke him, but
makes it very clear that this is a poor substitute for the
real thing. He spends most of the day asleep waiting for my
wife to come home so he can leap up on her desk to greet her.
He also supervises her when she gets up every morning.

Eve was a cat we didn't plan for. I had just taken one of
Anthony's siblings to the local humane society for her last
trip - while there wasn't anything medically wrong with her
she'd stopped eating, had difficulty walking, etc. She'd
decided she had come to the end of her time, and was just
waiting for the inevitable. Rather than prolong her pain
and suffering I gave her a peaceful ending. Even so it's
a hard thing to do, so I sat for a while in the cat area
before driving home. There were only a couple of cats out
at the time, and I was told that one of them wasn't really
sociable - she hardly interacted with any of the volunteers.
The cat, however, obviously had othe plans. Almost as soon
as I sat down she leaped up onto the bench beside me, then
head-butted my arm out of the way to climb onto my lap.
Apparently she had decided she was going home with me.
Other than that she's a fairly typical tortie - she can
go in a trice from accepting all the attention you can
give her to biting the hand that dares to disturb her fur.
And what fur it is! Long and silky, but maintenance free!

Ella was a cat returned to a local shelter when her owner
went off to college. She's taken a while to accept us as her
new staff. Unfortunately she seeks a cure for her insecurity
in the food bowl, and could really do with losing some weight.
But with multiple other cats in the household (who all want
to eat on different schedules) there's always food available.
Sadly, her fur isn't maintenance free, so we do sometimes
have to make her suffer the indignity of being brushed.

Spot was one of the fosters we had last year (a mother and
her five kittens). The mother was, unusually, a ginger tabby.
(that's far more common in males than in females). All of
her kittens were boys, and all of them were ginger tabbies.
The mother was semi-feral (she eventually got a placement
as a barn cat), so even though they were used to the presence
of humans (we got them when they were a couple of days old)
they weren't particularly demonstrative, and were always a
little withdrawn when interacting with people.
Spot (named after Data's cat on Star Trek) didn't originally
have that name. We were working on names for the kittens,
and had got as far as "ginger" for the one that didn't have
Any white fur. One of the others was, as is typical, somewhat
smaller than the rest. At one point I referred to him as the
baby cat. That gave me an idea, and the other three were from
that moment Sporty (who became Spot), Scary & Posh.

Re: Ball Head Question

2018-08-26 Thread Larry Colen
A few years back I realized my tripod head was not up to the task, and
despite my having a big investment in RC3 I realized that the quality of
RC3 compatible gear maxed out at "pretty good, but not good enough".

There are companies like Custom SLR that make plates which are both RC3
and Arca Swiss Compatible.

Also a lot of QR mechanisms are attached to the head with a 3/8-16
tread, so I was able to convert at least one of my RC3 ballheads to arca
swiss.

There is a lot out there at all price ranges for arca swiss.

Re: Ball Head Question

2018-08-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
I love my Sirui ball head. It’s beautifully engineered and machined. I have the
Arca mount on it. I used The Manfrotto mount for years, but once I became
accustomed to the Arca I much preferred it.

Re: Ball Head Question

2018-08-26 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Henk. I've never used the Arca Swiss system and appreciate your
comments. I wondered if there was much difference and it seems that some
AS plates have a lip on them that can be mounted against the back of the
body, preventing it from rotating on the plate. That feature (which
apparently is only on some plates) and the availability of an L bracket
for the K1 led to look at Arca Swiss compatible heads.  I think I'll
take a look at Manfrotto's offerings and see how they stack up.

Recently I bought for flower pics a sturdy mini tripod with ballhead,

I found it much easier and safer to mount and unmount the camera on
the Manfrotto RC2 system, even with one hand is possible.

So I got rid of the Arca-Swiss system. Having two systems is bad option.

Thanks, Larry - those are two very good suggestions. The Induro BHD1
looks to be very close to what I want. It doesn't have a lever lock per
se, but the knob is looks to be pretty large with good grips, so it
should work even with gloves. I'll be taking a closer look at the Induro
line up.

Thanks David. Yes, 7135 is my favorite, a shot of the kid next door. His

Re: GESO Football

2018-08-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks Dan. St. Hugo was an 11th century monk who was instrumental in
developing monasteries, hospitals and more. St. Hugo of the Hills is a parish
in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan that was built on the former estate of Ted
McManus, a pioneer in automotive advertising. McManus’s sons died young and he
offered to give the archdiocese about 40 acres of property and build a church
on the land if they would allow internment of his sons in a crypt below the
church. The archdiocese had to get dispensation from the pope to make it
happen. Today, the entire McManus family is in a crypt below the old church. A
newer church was built some 40 years ago. The parish thrives in the heavily
catholic and rather wealthy community. Most of the kids in my sub go to the
elementary school, which still has five teaching nuns, very rare these days.
The football team is called the Vikings, BTW, even though the parish is heavily
Irish.
