If you were completely insane, you could just put a new internal

Re: PESO - a framed photo by...?

2018-12-22 Thread ann sanfedele
Ken - it is clear you are right...  though the photo of the photo I
showed you guys is askew.. there are other bits in other party goes
photos...
Also, given the size my friend has and the prices for a framed numbered
and signed print on his web page of that specific shot The ID of the

work my friend has is solved..

But two other photographers have been credited with what looks like an
exact photo on the web  I'm not thinking the other photographers
plagerized Mangelsen's  work or claimed they or he or she took it, but
that multiple mistakes have been made in attribution.

Ken - there are cases on line of that exact photo being attributed to
two other photogs - not "similar"  - perhaps because all three are noted for
their photos taken in Churchill - perhaps a lot of innocent
misattribution by deduction, as it were.

When I've googled my name in the image google search, lots of photos
appear that were neither taken by me or are photso OF me  - of course I know
which are mine and which photos I'm in, but someone doing sloppy
research might put my name on someone elses work, then someone sees that
and continiues the myth.

I|m really glad you knew for sure... and I am familiar with his work,
too, but not to the extent you are - seen some interviews and such on
PBS for instance..

To me, the photo is not one of his best by a large margin.. too static
and a bit too cutsie-pie for me... which goes along with my opinion of

deceased friends taste in general.

There's no plagiarizing going on here IMO. Mangelsen and Ward are well
known outdoor photogs and travel extensively to capture the images
they seek. Polar bears are a favorite subject for alot of outdoor
photographers and are photographed in numerous place. Just because
similar images are taken by several photographers doesn't mean there
is any plagiarizing going on - except maybe from the first photog to
show a polar bear image like "Winter Solace". As far as I know,
Mangelsen was the first pro photog to shown a Grizzly bear at Brooks
Falls in Katmai Alaska, with a salmon jumping into its mouth. All
similar shots like his have been called the Mangelsen shot by other pros.

Finally, that's a mighty cheap looking frame for an image that sold
for so much.

As noted on the Mangelsen web page, he offers the image in 8 different
display options from framed to canvas only.

A limited edition print should also be signed & numbered, usually on
the mat.

According to Mangelsen's web page - "All Mangelsen limited edition
photographs are assigned a unique number and hand-signed by the
artist. Each photograph includes a certificate of authenticity".

I note that Mangelsen Gallery doesn't identify a photographer, but
presumably if
another photographer had taken it, the gallery would attribute it to
them, so it

"must" have been taken by Thomas Mangelsen. ???

That raises more questions than it answers.

We now have three versions of the same image (one a mirror copy)
supposedly

taken by Thomas Mangelsen, Kennan Ward and/or Tom & Pat Leeson.

I just don't see the three** of them standing tripod to tripod to tripod
photographing the same trio of bears. So who plagiarized whom?

I still wonder how the two versions of the image came to be mirrored
and was it
taken in Churchill in Manitoba or at ANWR in Alaska ... or somewhere
else? But

that's the least of the questions I have about the image.

Another thing ... if it was purchased from Mangelsen Gallery, there
should be a
label on the back, especially if it's a limited edition print
(certificate of

authenticity?). A limited edition print should also be signed & numbered,
usually on the mat.

Finally, that's a mighty cheap looking frame for an image that sold

I don't know how big your hard drive is, but with external drives down
under $40/TB this might be a good time to buy an external drive and
copy your applications folder, your home folder, raw files and catalogs
to it.

If you were completely insane, you could just put a new internal drive
in your computer, get an external case for your old drive, and just do a
completely clean install of OS, apps, etc. and then copy your data over
to the new machine and use your current drive as a complete backup.
Once the dust settles, keep it at a friends house as a offsite backup.

First: I presume you've checked the folders on the hard drive and all the files are still
there. If you have used the "Metadata > Save metadata to files" command, all
your metadata, including keywords, are saved on disk in the actual image files for DNG,
TIFF, and JPEG files, and in .xmp sidecar files for the native raw files. (I do this
regularly, as I work through a session, so that I don't have to do it en masse. So all is
not lost, if you've saved regularly as you work.

I would definitely load a recent backup of the catalog file and test that. The
likelyhood is greatest that something simply clobbered your current .LRCAT
file. If no backup .LRCAT works, you can always start LR up, create a new
catalog, and then have it import all the existing files in ADD mode and
recreate most of the .LRCAT that way, minus virtual copies etc.

PITA for sure, but I wouldn't link it with the Google API change other than
maybe as a side effect of something that notified you.

you have to do to decompress the older backup?

Maybe make a copy of the older backup and decompress from that.

That way you'd have the status quo ante to return to if it somehow screws up

whatever is going on with it.

Any other suggestions?

Hi Rick,

I agree with the other responses: I doubt this had anything to do with
the Google API change. It certainly hasn't happened on my system, and I

First: I presume you've checked the folders on the hard drive and all the
files are still there. If you have used the "Metadata > Save metadata to
files" command, all your metadata, including keywords, are saved on disk
in the actual image files for DNG, TIFF, and JPEG files, and in .xmp
sidecar files for the native raw files. (I do this regularly, as I work
through a session, so that I don't have to do it en masse. So all is not
lost, if you've saved regularly as you work.

I would definitely load a recent backup of the catalog file and test
that. The likelyhood is greatest that something simply clobbered your
current .LRCAT file. If no backup .LRCAT works, you can always start LR
up, create a new catalog, and then have it import all the existing files
in ADD mode and recreate most of the .LRCAT that way, minus virtual
copies etc.

PITA for sure, but I wouldn't link it with the Google API change other
than maybe as a side effect of something that notified you.

Godfrey,

The following things abruptly happened in LR6 and just about the time

- I have a “Photos” folder containing one folder for each year on an
external drive that I use as my “photo drive.” The number of photos
reported overall, and the number of photos in each annual folder, went
to 0. Oddly, most of the monthly sub-folders still display accurate
counts, though some (like all of them from 2015) report 0.

- My keywords vanished, almost every one of them. Some groups of photos
still have their keywords, but the search function can’t find them.

I tried quitting and restarting LR, and quitting and restarting my
computer and hard drives. No use.

2018-12-22 Thread Rick Womer
Today I restarted the computer again, running fsck in the Unix shell on the
way. No problems.

Since the image counts and keywords are missing even in almost-2-year-old
copies of the catalog, it seems it must be a mutation in Lightroom itself.

My backups include LR6. Would I be inviting further trouble if I decompressed
and ran one of them?

Even dealing with the Kodak Labs in Fair Lawn was more fun dealing with these
computer problems.

Re: Done with my backlog

2018-12-22 Thread Stanley Halpin
My reaction is a bit more muted than John's. I prefer the color version. I see
some potential but generally would say “neither.”

The framing does not appeal to me. I want to take the two chairs that intrude
on the margins and get rid of them before taking this shot. That would leave an
interesting still life of sorts. But those two chairs are just too much added
clutter. Particularly given that all three chairs in the scene are different
styles.

But given the image you have, and assuming no heroic Photoshopping to clean out
the clutter, then the color version is better because the several bits of red
help to unify the scene. That gets lost in the b version.

Re: OT - Le Photospot

2018-12-22 Thread John

It wasn't just Disneyland.

The "Kodak Scenic Spot" campaign started back in 1920 and ran through 1939,
although the company continued to place signs up until the late 1980s. At its
peak, the program there were over 6,000 "Kodak" scenic spots, picture spots,
photo spots ...

I don't know if Kodak marketing ever used the campaign outside of the U.S., but
I would be surprised if they hadn't.

Nikon took over the sponsorship of the "photo spots" at Disney properties in
2013 when Kodak filed for bankruptcy and ended their relationship as the
"official" supplier of cameras and film.
