Re: Back up your CD-R's and DVD-R's

2020-03-28 Thread P. J. Alling

Dave, you might want to try a paid program called IsoBuster.

I used to have a license for it many years ago, and it was astounding
the files it would recover from badly damaged media.

I haven't used it in a while but compared to all the other recovery
programs I've tried, you might as well get one of the free ones they all
do the same thing.

IsoBuster bypasses the OS routines for reading files off a drive and
goes straight to the hardware to attempt to read whatever data might be
on a CD or DVD.

Unfortunately for all it's capabilities, it only runs under Windows, and
IIRC you're running some flavor of MacOS, so you'll probably have to use
an emulator, it's supposed to work with those, but I have no experience
there.

Re: Current Camera Line

2020-03-28 Thread P. J. Alling

New flagship, K-3 replacement supposedly coming in 2020...

Given current world events it might take until first quarter 2021.  The
camera body itself looks good, but I doubt it will be a gigantic leap
over the K70 or the KP, at least as far as imaging is concerned.  There
may however be a big change in the viewfinder, autofocus when using the
OFV, and possibly a major improvement in the focusing in Live View, also
possible an improvement in movie recording, to go along with a faster
frame rate, maybe a faster frame rate based on electronic shutter.
Certainly the the physical UI will look more like a K-P or K-1, since
that seems to be the direction Ricoh want's to go.

Most of those things don't really mean that much to me.  If I were
interested in buying a new as opposed to used camera I'd probably buy a
K-70 based on it's current capabilities and pricing, and be happy,
especially as the K-70 has the closest UI to the K-50 which will
minimize learning where everything you use now is.

On 2/19/2020 11:21 AM, Ed Keeney wrote:

My K-50 has been acting up lately (again) and I figured I would look
at the current options for a replacement.

Anyone have inside information if/when Pentax will be updating their
line of cameras?

The K-70 will be 4 years old this year
The KP is 3 years old
The K1 II is out of my price range

Thanks!

the jaggies more or less disappear.  For me it's an artifact of how the

Stupid Adobe Question

2020-03-28 Thread Bill

Hi, I am toying with the idea of subscribing to Photoshop/Lightroom.
The website lists two options:

"Photography", which includes Photoshop and Lightroom for US$9.99/month

or

Photoshop for US$20.99 and then Lightroom plan for US$9.99.
This Lightroom comes with 1T of online storage, something I would
probably never use and the Photoshop comes with some storage and Adobe
Fresco, Adobe Portfolio, Adobe Fonts, and Adobe Spark, as well as Access
to the latest features and updates as soon as they’re released

Had I been smart and bought the extended version of the Photoshop I am
using, I wouldn't really be looking to upgrade anything, but I've run
into a couple of irritants in Lightroom, and there are some Photoshop
features I would like to have that I don't because I'm a cheap bastard
when I shouldn't be.

My stupid question is this: Are the versions of Photoshop and Lightroom
in the 10 dollar offer the same ones in the 31 dollar offer?

Thanks

It does not look overdone to me. It’s possible that if I compared it with
another processing technique I would feel differently, but on it’s own it looks
fine.

Thanks for the link, Bob.

You might want to put such contributions into a thread of their own. I'd
almost missed it. Not everyone is still following the endless discussion
if an idiot should be called an idiot. :-)

At this display resolution, I do NOT think it looks noisy.

There is a sense of grittiness but I feel it is due to cold, damp,
overcast weather.

PESO: Some old iron and a call for help

2020-03-28 Thread Ralf R Radermacher

I'm playing around with ON1 Photo RAW, yet again. They're offering it at
half price until next week and I've bought it as another string on my bow.

The thing I'm still not happy with is the sharpening on export. The
names of the settings are cryptic and there is no easy way to set the
intensity.

Please have a look at this:

https://www.fotocommunity.de/photo/neujahrsparade-in-zwankendamme-fotoralfbe/43633243

Are you OK with the sharpening or is ON1 overdoing things?

The photo shows a bunch of Belgian electric locomotives at the former
Zwankendamme halt between Bruges and the port of Zeebrugge in 2011. The
engines and the halt are history.

Magnum photographers are posting their 'lockdown diaries' to Instagram. Very
interesting to see how they deal with this. Emulate them.
