Re: I Sold One!!
Sure you may ask. I, however, needn't answer. :-) (That's something my father would have said. Remember that post about me becoming my parents? It's happening again g) I'm about 6000 messages behind :-( But seriously, $60 Cdn for an 8x10 signed print alone. That's a very, very low price. That's for an archival Fibre Base print, which for some reason I thought was around $30 to print. Turns out it's $40 to print. So, I'm only making $20 on it. I recall once (either on the list or in person, can't remember), Aaron (late of this list) suggested selling prints for at least twice your cost of printing. So, now knowing that 8x10's are $40 each, I'll raise my price to what I think is a more realistic $80. That's still a very, very low price. Anyway, thanks for the answer - after all, you didn't have to answer ;-) ukasz [EMAIL PROTECTED] === www.fotopolis.pl === internetowy magazyn o fotografii

Hu.I have several prints on Canon paper and Ilford semi gloss and pearl that are well over 1 1/2 years old and now loss in quality with the S800.(My test strips) I offer a 10 year quaranty with all my digital prints,no one has taken me up yet. Is it possible then that there's something wrong with my printer (don't think so) or the inkset that came with the printer? FA 50/2.8 Macro
Hi there, I have an opportunity to buy this lens in ex + condition for the equivalent of $188. Is this a good price? And another question - I love 50/55mm lenses. Really liked my M 50/1.7, was very fond of the FA 50/1.4, and now I'm a proud (and happy) owner of one K 55/1.8 and one K 50/1.4. But... Always willing to try something new, I thought I'd a macro 50mm a shot this time. Since I lost an A 50/2.8 auction on ebay last night, I thought maybe the FA 50/2.8 would be a good choice, since I have one available locally. How bulky is this lens compared to e.g. a K 50/1.4? Subjectively speaking - I know their dimentions. How is the manual focus? I love the feel of manual lenses, but can live with what my FA 35/2 can offer. I'll use this lens (i.e. the FA 50/2.8) on a MX. I'm not that much of a macro-shooter, but would like the ability to close focus to 0,19m. Anything else I should know? TIA. Regards, ukasz [EMAIL PROTECTED] === www.fotopolis.pl === internetowy magazyn o fotografii
Re: FA 50/2.8 Macro
The lens has a dampening switch on it so when you use it in manual focus it feels like a manual focus lens. That's one of the most important things for me - it's good to know that I'll have an opportunity to handle this lens before buing, though :-) I knew about the dampening swich, but I've read conflicting reports about it's efficiency, so to speak. It is a bit large for a 50mm, probably twice the length of your 1.7 or 1.4 and has a metal barrel so it is a little heavy for a 50mm as well. I think it is worth the size and weight for a lens so sharp and versatile. Many thanks for your opinion, David - especially since you, like me, are not a regular macro shoter. Re: Pancake SMC-M 40mm 2.8
I only used one for a couple of weeks, courtesy of Wendy, and I loved it. Not only does it's size work nicely with the MX, but I liked the fact that it focuses from about 17 inches out (someone correct me if I'm wrong). You called, Frank? g From Boz's site - it focuses down to 0,6 m - that's almost two feet for those metrically challenged :-) And that's exactly what I don't like about it (from reading about it on the internet). I always wondered why my brother's Nikkor 50/1.8 focused down only to 0,6 m. I really love the ability to shoot detail with a Pentax 50 mm - focusing down to 0,45 m. Still, I'd like to own one for some time, if only just to be able to see the 40 mm focal lenght throught the viewfinder - so far my only experience with a 40 mm lens has been with fixed lens rangefinders. Yes, I know - it's in the photos, but still, I'd rerally like to be able to look throught the viewfinder and see exactly what the lens sees_before_ realising the shutter. Re: Pancake SMC-M 40mm 2.8
I don't doubt your (or Boz') figures. I thought it was closer, but what do I know? g No more mean comments from me today, so I'll pass :-) My point, I guess, is that for street shooting, hyperfocusing from 2 feet to infinity gives one pretty good focus-free range, and that makes the MX/Pancake combo very good for street shooting or candids. I agree. regards, ukasz concise as usual

I've recently bought a SMC A 24-50/4 lens that's optically identical to the F autofocus version. Haven't had the time to develop the first negatives, but from what I've noticed just by shooting with it - don't be surprised 'cause the lens flares like hell. Yes... The LX SC-21 screen is a little brighter than the standard MX SC-1 screen. Is the difference significant? I did have the meter adjusted on my MX to compensate for the slightly brighter screen. How big the difference is? Is it possible to compensate for it by adjusting the ISO dial? The new LX SC-69 screen is even brighter than the SC-21, but they do cost more... AF Adapter 1.7X on a manual body
Hi all, I've just bought an AF Adapter 1.7X from a fellow PDMLer, and it seems there's something wrong with it (the adapter, not the man :-) It seems the adapter is focusing closer than it should (from 0.5 cm to a few cm - that's 1/5 of an inch, and then a few inches for those not so familiar with the metric system). The difference is smaller with shorter distances and bigger with longer distances. I'm using a FA 50/1.4. Focus confirmation indicates the subjet's in focus, but it's not. Some of you may remember that some time ago I asked about possible problems with my MZ-S's autofocus, but after shooting a roll of slides I determined that everything was fine. And then the differences between what the AF indicated and what my eye claimed was sharp were really minimal - with the adapter they're much greater, and therefore I tend to think that it's the adapter's fault. And now to my question. I have only one AF body - my second camera is an MX, so I have no way to check it on another AF camera (at least today). Does the adapter work on a manual focus body as a regular teleconverter and I should be able to focus from short distances to infinity? Thanks in advance, ukasz PS. And yes - I'll shoot a test roll of slides with the adapter anyway. === www.fotopolis.pl [EMAIL PROTECTED] === internetowy magazyn o fotografii --r-e-k-l-a-m-a- Szukasz banku bez prowizji ? mBank - za konto http://epieniadze.onet.pl/mbank

Probably MZ-S focusing problem
Hi gang, I think my MZ-S may have a focusing problem. Everytime I use autofocus the object isn't criticaly sharp. I mean, when I switch to manual focus and turn the focusing ring a bit (maybe a milimeter) to the right (i.e. set a bit longer distance) it is noticeably sharper. It's a small yet visible difference. I happens with all my three lenses of which two are autofocus (FA 50/1.4 and FA 28/2.8). The same thing happens when I use the manual lens and use the focus confirmation. I use the central sensor and do not recompose (I know, I know... I'm saying that just in case someone asks). I tried to mess with the diopter correction, but still can't make the image to be critically sharp when autofocused. For now the diopter correction thingy is set to its central position, because it seems I see the viewfinder info a bit more clearly than when its set to the adjacent positions. Anyone has an idea what can be the problem? The camera is new - never dropped, kicked, etc. Thanks in advance, ukasz === www.fotopolis.pl [EMAIL PROTECTED] === internetowy magazyn o fotografii --r-e-k-l-a-m-a- Tanie bilety lotnicze! http://samoloty.onet.pl
Re: Probably MZ-S focusing problem
Just an idea, but...try setting the diopter while looking at a blank subject, such as the sky or a plain wall and using the diopter setting to get the AF and spot circle indicators sharp. And that's the problem - they *are* sharp! Congrats, Glenn! ukasz === www.fotopolis.pl [EMAIL PROTECTED] === internetowy magazyn o fotografii - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, January 26, 2003 7:07 AM Subject: My Exciting Evening When I and the friends mentioned in my previous message went into a coffee shop, I noticed local-artist art on the walls with prices next to each piece. So I asked our waitress whom I'd ask about getting my photos on their walls, and she said that their art director wasn't in, but she'd give him my contact info. When she brought our order, she told me the art director had come in and was upstairs, so one of my friend and I went to fetch my portfolio out of my car a few blocks away (which I'd tossed into the car on a random whim), and I asked him to look at it. Now I've had show my portfolio to a gallery or a restaurant on my to-do list for about two years, but I'm _shy_[1]. I'm also insecure. You see, I know that I've made some photos I can feel proud of, and I'm used to hearing my friends tell me in impressed-sounding voices that I've got great photos, and I've started getting accustomed to strangers and vague acquaintances saying, Hey, these are pretty good! when I show off my work (but never buying anything). But an art director, or a gallery-owner, or someone like that? Whole different level of ego-issues; whole different bundle of stress and insecurities; and complete lack of confidence regarding how to _approach_ someone like that (which is where the shyness comes in). The art director at Xando (31st Charles, for folks who know Baltimore) looked at my photos. He made the expected noises that I interpreted as, Yeah, that's okay, and That's nice enough, but didn't seem _impressed_ at first. Then he got to a photo that he reacted to by changing his body language. (It's one that I consider _pretty_ but kind of cliche -- the Baltimore Aquarium on a sunny day.) Then a few more that seemed merely ok, and another that he looked at a little longer and said, That's nice, a few where he asked where they were shot, and another that seemed to get a reaction from him ... and so on to the end of the binder. Then he said, My first available slot is September. I was expecting, I'll keep you in mind. No, he was telling me my photos would go up in September and asking whether I wanted the whole restuarant or only part of it (I opted for just downstairs). He also said that if I wanted to hold a reception, that'd be cool. #blink# *pause* BOUNCE Looks like I've got my first public showing lined up several months from now! Big step for me. The art director said that the photographer who has nine photos grouped together downstairs now is making a lot of sales; I hope I manage to sell a few this Fall. Now I get to: drive myself and my friends crazy trying to decide which photos to show at what sizes and changing my mind every time I start to second-guess my own judgement; come up with money to frame enough prints and get a few printed at larger sizes than what I've got; and try to figure out how I should price my work. WHEE! Advice and pointers from those of you who already know how to play the fine-art game Extremely Welcome. This is water I've been trying to work up the nerve to dip my toe into for a long time, but it's all unfamiliar territory. (Now to go dig through my archived mail for what folks said when I first said I was interested in going in this direction...) September. Looks like a long time from now, but it's probably a good thing I have that long to prepare. -- Glenn [1] Yeah, yeah, I know, I hear it a lot: How can somebody with the guts to wear a skirt and heels with a beard in public be shy? I am; I just managed to conceptualize that as a Different Matter than my shyness -- it doesn't involve _approaching_ people, or calling them on the telephone. In fact, since folks sometimes approach me to talk to me because of how I dress, it even helps to _compensate_ for my shyness a little. I talk easily to strangers if they start the conversation or if there's a BIG conversation-starter to comment on, and I do fine in the spotlight (including public-speaking), so most folks think that's the whole story and don't see where I have trouble; but I'm not making this up -- I really am shy about approaching people. Less so than a dozen years ago, thank God, but it's still a problem. ***r-e-k-l-a-m-a** Chcesz oszczdzi na kosztach obsugi bankowej ? mBIZNES - konto dla firm http://epieniadze.onet.pl/mbiznes

Fw: Z-1p shutter and mirror noise
How noisy is the Z-1p? I'm mostly interested in the shutter and mirror noise, but if you know something interesting about it's film transport - let me know too ;-) What about vibrations caused by the mirror slap? Is it damped enough? How does it compare to the MZ-S in this respect? I'm considering buying either a MZ-S or a Z-1p. If I chose the former, I wouldn't have enough money for an autofocus lens. If I bought the latter I may be able to affor two not so bad lenses or one really good. I can live with the slower autofocus of the Z-1p and it's bulkier size, but I'm concerned about the noise it makes and the mirror slap. Thanks a lot in advance. Fw: some Pentax (but not only) stuff for sale
Hi there, To raise funds for my-to-be Z-1p or MZ-S I need to sell some stuff. I'm afraid that because of the shipment price my offer could only be attractive to our Polish members, but who knows. Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f/3.5, the first version with the 67 mm filter thread. A few dust specs inside, otherwise almost perfect. $100 Winder MX. Like new but for the foam inside the battery chamber - it deteriorated with time so I scrubbed it off. Doesn't affect functionality. Box and manual. $70 Black Super A. Doesn't look good - lotsa brassing (previous owner probably repainted the whole thing). CLA'ed and 100% functional, but immediatelly after the CLA the shutter release button started behaving oddly - sometimes it seemed as if it had been blocked. After a while the problem vanished and never came back, but I though this had to be clear. $100 SMC M 75-150 f/4. Very minor signs of use on the barrel, but otherwise perfect. I like this lens so much that I may not sell it after all, but you can get me now when I'm weak :-) $120 Contax G1 + 45/2. Like new save for very minor scratches on the back (of the camera of course :) caused by the previous owner's glasses. Boxes, papers, manuals, lenshood, caps. $500 And that's about it. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Best regards, ukasz PS. HI, I bought a very nice Fujica ST 901 last year. A very nice, advanced camera for pentax screw mount. It has features years ahead of Pentax' most advanced M42-- the ES II. But, it requires lenses with a special coupler arm on the mounting plate to take advantage of its open aperture metering. I found a 200mm brand new Soligor made for the fujica ST system, but as yet have not found any other focal lengths-- I bought a fujica 55/1.8 thinking surely any Fuji would have the feature, but no. OK, Bob - now tell which part is sad? Lukasz -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, October 19, 2002 5:24 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: How many bodies? - a sad tale Well, I can't seem to part with a Pentax. I started with a new ME that I used for many years. Then added a new Super Program and later thought I needed another, back-up Super Program (I love 'em!) Then reading Shutterbug bought a Yashica GSN rangefinder ($50 w/1.7 lens) I thought the wife needed an A3000 so she could take some pictures. And how about a Minolta PS with 2 lens settings 40mm 60mm, (just for the times when you didn't want to lug the Pentax gear or to loan the kids) Then a PZ-1, a very different experience that I liked Then got a AF35 point-n-shoot at a camera show (couldn't be seen with a Minolta) Then a Yashica half-frame (Shutterbug reading again!) In the meantime, I had begun collecting M series lenses, so I bought a brassy black MX to be a companion for my old chrome ME. Then I found a Mint Black MX in the box... And how about that cute Black ME, why didn't I buy one of those to start. And how about a P5 or two (they still don't match-up to a Super Program). It has been all down hill from there... More Super Programs cause I love 'em - honest dear, their for the kids! People on this list started talking about KM's and KX's and K2's so I had to get some. The KM was easy, the K2's not difficult, and the KX's hard. They all seem to have dents at the top of their pentaprisms And ME Supers. They are so popular with you folks so let's try some. Fred sold me a MEF. I remember looking at one before buying the Super Program. Then he told me about the elusive Black MEF... and that took another 18 months. And then there are the LX'es. With so much praise, I had to have one. Have I lost track of one, or was that the cleaning lady walking off with one? My daughter shows some interest in Photography, so an SF1 joined the household. Stan sold me a PZ-1p for just that extra boost to 3.5 fps over the PZ-1. And as appeasement, the wife got a new Yashica T5 Super for her photos. Then JCO started talking screwmount so I got a Spotmatic at a show. Just to try some lenses, I picked up another complete kit with a H3. And to complete the set, I found a good deal on a K so I bought it. And that's my sad tale of how I became a Pentax collector. As to what I 'need'? I find myself carrying an LX and the PZ-1p when looking to take general pictures. The autofocus is useful, the LX classic... two different feels and two different ways of working, but easy to keep separate on those two bodies. And I still love those Super Programs. I can shoot them in my sleep! But hey, the ME Super is pretty good too with that big viewfinder and quite shutter. And have you ever tried an H3. It's a 40 year old mechanical camera and still delivers high quality pictures. Well, I'm addicted... Regards, Bob S.

RE: how many bodies do you own
I was asking to make myself feel less miserable. I'm a bit paranoid about having a backup. That's why I bought a beat-up Super A (but working fine). BUT, when it returned from the CLA it was certainly looking better, but sometimes the shutter didn't fire. So I returned it to the technician who did the CLA. He said there was nothing wrong with the camera, but he cleaned it again anyway and said it should work fine. And what happened? Now the camera thinks the batteries are low (and they're new, I mean a couple of sets I've put in the camera to check) and it fires only at the mechanical speed (i guess, does the SUper A have a mechanical speed?). So now I'm left with only a MX (but still have a Contax G1, a Rolleiflex, and a small Yashica rangefinder, so it's not that bad :) Regards, ukasz -Original Message- From: gfen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 18, 2002 9:12 PM To: pentax Subject: Re: how many bodies do you own On Fri, 18 Oct 2002, [iso-8859-2] ukasz Kacperczyk wrote: I'm just curious how many 35mm slr (or maybe not necessarily slr) you own. I also own a P645, YashicaMat 124G TLR, and a Speed Graphic Pacemaker which I suppose could've been considered a rangefinder before I took everything off to make it a field camera. At some point, I'm still compelled to add a KX to the collection.

RE: Test, but please read and respond off list.
I didn't know that I was the cause of so much trouble :) Never received such an attachment myself (despite those from Brad which I deleted immediately for my anti-virus software is down temporarily and I don't want to take risks). I'm replying to this on-list because it may be interesting in clearing up why some people's messages appear as if they were attachments, when viewed in MS Outlook, and possibly in Outlook Express. I believe it may be because of the use of various international character sets in the Windows world. For example, many of gfen's (real name?) messages and those from Lukasz Kacperczyk, together with replies to them, appear as attachments in the form ATTx.txt Charset = X-UNKNOWN. This is because I use the standard English (both US and elsewhere) PC-8 character set, and do not have the other sets loaded on my systems. This is probably true for most of us. Solution? Load every known character set for presentation purposes! In practical terms. recognise genuine attachments (which I think the list server now strips automatically) from this particular band-aid from Microsoft. RE: Well, in an effort to bring around additional topics...
What a refreshing thread - no mention of a non-existant Pentax DSLR :-) Good luck with the camera club - it should be nice to have some themes imposed on you, so that you would shoot something you wouldn't otherwise. Cheers, Lukasz
RE: Well, in an effort to bring around additional topics...
Read Mike Johnston's Sunday Morning Photographer column from yesterday. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/sm-10-06.shtml It's a very interesting read on the difference between a pro and an amateur, and the importance of careful editing. But maybe I like it so much, because it seems the author somehow entered my head and stole his ideas from there ;) I have yet to enter a picture for the PUG gallery, but hope to try soon :) Regarding the yearly self-portraits, I think it's an interesting idea. ukasz -Original Message- From: gfen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, October 14, 2002 10:10 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Well, in an effort to bring around additional topics... I figure if I activly try to shoot for the Pug and for that, it should be nice. I'd been thinking for awhile of trotting out my old highschool assignments and reshooting them, just to have some drive and push. I guess the next meeting they'll pick next year's themes, as well. You know, I do wish that the PUG would've put in a self-portrait theme for every year, it'd be interesting to see how people have changed from the old ones...

RE: Re[2]: Well, in an effort to bring around additional topics...
I feel the same. You can't make good pictures being interested only in photography - you can't make good portraits if you're not interested in people, etc. Something has got to make you leave home (or enter the studio). Well, OK - you could make nice pictures of your cameras, but that's really a niche activity :) Lukasz -Original Message- From: Bob Walkden [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 15, 2002 12:05 AM To: gfen Subject: Re[2]: Well, in an effort to bring around additional topics... Hi, No, that's nothat I mean.. I don't know how to explain it.. People who know what they want, though, in a photograph and drive themselves to it, rather than people who just take pretty pictures and like to share. David Hurn explains what I think you mean in the chapter about choosing a subject in 'On being a photographer' - it's available on the web somewhere - Google will find it. In it he suggests that being a photographer is secondary to other interests, and it is the pursuit of these interests, of course coupled with technical and visual skills, that often produces the best photographs. --- Bob
RE: New lens got me thinking
Well, if portability is an issue I'd opt for the 100mm and the 200mm. I wouldn't bother with the 85 or 120, cause they're too close to the 100. I'd go for the zoom if flexibility was most important (and in overt photojournalism - i.e. when you're not bothered that your subject knows you're there). Still, if you don't have the need for autofocus and the 2.8 speed, the Series 1 Vivitars 70-210/3.5 should do well - the second one (with the 62mm filter thread) is supposed to be smaller than the first one, but even the latter isn't that big (sure it's not an M135/3.5 but not a Tokina ATX 2.8 either). Just my two cents, Łukasz -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, October 10, 2002 5:12 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: New lens got me thinking Just picked up a mint SMC M100/2.8 and it got me thinking. (Anything to get my mind off this Digital discussion) I've always had a craving for an 80-200/2.8. They are certainly convenient and very high quality lenses. Problem is, they are big, heavy and very expensive. So I was thinking. Would I rather go out with my miniature 100/f2.8, my 200/f2.5, and maybe the 120/f2.8 or the 80/f2, as opposed to lugging out the 80-200/f2.8. Certainly there would be less changing of lenses with the zoom. But, if you're like me, you often end up using the zoom more or less at its two extremes most of the time — At the 80 end or the 200 end. Not a lot of in between stuff. In fact, I usually end up at the long end wishing for more. The zoom seems like overkill if you're mostly using it at around 80 or 100, surely the 80/f2 or the 100/f2.8 is a better choice. And it's even pretty big at the 200 end compared to say the 200A*/f2.8 or the older 2.5. Maybe I'm better off without the 80-200/f2.8. Just some food for thought. What do you think? Vic
