Re: MZ-5n vs MZ-6
- Original Message - From: Kostas Kavoussanakis snip I am looking forward to hearing people's opinions on the viewfinder of the MZ-5n, hoping I will finally tell them apart. I have no experience at all with the L/6 but I do have the 5N here in Sunny Georgia. It's not a great viewfinder if you're taking a lot of pictures outside in bright light. You simply must shade the camera with your left hand if you want to read the information in the display. This is ok if you have two hands and one of them is free but it is a little tedious if you're out shooting the kids all day. It's also not very bright when compared with my Super Program. Other than that, I'm VERY pleased with my 5N and think kindly of the PDMLr in Austrailia who saw fit to sell it to me at a good price :) Cory Waters
Re: PUG comment reminder
Chris, I'm not in December's PUG. I know we talked (?) about a standing comment request but you said to sort through the folks who do want comments and the ones who don't this month or are not submitting each month would be too much. Anyway, I missed the equinox thingie so Also, I got assigned somebody this month whose submission I couldn't find at the time (have not looked since but I looked MANY times that day). I sent you a note but it may have gotten lost. Cory Waters - Original Message - From: Chris Brogden [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 11:16 AM Subject: PUG comment reminder Ok, here's the reminder. We're keeping it nice and simple. If you want your PUG photo commented on, feel free to send me a letter *off-list* at [EMAIL PROTECTED] saying Hey, this is insert name here and I want to have my photo commented on for this PUG or something like that, and it'll be done. If you send the letter to Bill Robb or the PUG team, they'll ignore it, since the PUG gallery is a separate entity. You could send a letter to the PDML asking for comments if you want, though of course it's hit and miss whether you'll get any. The commenting process is now initiated by the photographer, so if you don't want your photo commented on, you don't have to do anything: the default is no comments. You'll have to mail me a request for comments each month that you want them, as there could be some months when you don't want comments, for whatever reason. The commentators are: Bruce Dayton, Frank Theriault, Luis Pinar, Lasse Karlsson, Jaume Lahuerta, Gianfranco Irlanda, César Matamoros II, and Cory Waters. If anyone on that list no longer wishes to be a commentator, please let me know off-list ASAP. Of course, if anyone has any questions about how this is going to work, or what this whole commenting thing is about, feel free to email me off-list and I'll fill you in. Re: Calibration project was:The weakest link?
That WOULD be cool. I'm so often disappointed with images on one screen and then slightly suppressed when they look better (or worse) elsewhere. I often wonder what my images look like on other people's screens. I KNOW they looked much darker on my screen at work until I got a little too distracted and talked on the phone too long while holding a large speaker just inches from the glass :). Now that monitor gives everything a cool rainbow effect. BUT I got a new(er), larger monitor replacement before lunch that day from the IT guys! But since I took on this task I persuaded it to behave... I used to have a ME super bought around 1981, it has been a very good camera travelling with me all around the world. But one day it didn't like travelling anymore and started to meter all pics one or two stops to low. And since I am a person always forgetting these things I decided to give it in good hands (my brothers wife) and there it has a quiet live now. For myself I bought a MZ-5 and two zoom lenses 28-70 and 70-210 (bad girl). Over the years and several birthdays and Xmases I accumulated another MZ-5n, some more lenses and a tripot. Now I try to remember all the good advice from the PDML (and my boyfriend) but stress the try. My pics are most of the time underexposed or the lamppost is in the middle of the composition and what else you can think of. But gradually it gets better and some of my efforts can be viewed at http://www.kirschten.de I wouldn't call me a beginner but a forgetter. But don't worry I won't forget the PUG though. Since in Argentina there's no Thanksgiving (it seems like we just killed the indians without taking their food first), the holiday means little for us. Also, we don't have any family in the US besides my wife and myself. So, for the second year, we rented the same cabin in South Lake Tahoe with the same two good friends (he's Mexican, she's Spanish, no thanksgiving for them either) Spent the weekend playing cards, seeing the snow fall, and wondering how the heck we'll get out of here tomorrow. No turkey either, but I made empanadas. I shot some frames in the lake with the K1000, new for me. Everybody knows that last October 14th, I was stolen, and I lost my second LX, with 50mm 1.7 and 100mm Macro. I received a great amount of support from this great list (I' ll contact two members privately in this regard). Here in Buenos Aires, there is a downtown street called Libertad (freedom, ironically), that's full of used equipment stores, including stereo, video and photo equipment. Everybody knows it's all stolen stuff, but it exists (corruption) and will exist forever. So, since I was stolen, I keep a copy of the police report in my wallet just in case. And since I go downtown almost everyday for work, I try to pass by Libertad always I can. Well, last week I saw a 100mm Macro in one of this stores cabinet, and a cold wave runned thru my body. I knew it was MY 100mm f4. The LX wasnt there, just a Spotmatic and some other lenses. I asked if they had more Pentax gear, and they said not by now. I said fuck! This guy has my camera, I know, but I can't do nothing (I don't have the serial no. of this lens). Yesterday, I went again, and in the same store it was, voila, my dear LX, without the strap, but with my custom shaped and painted Grip A and all the use marks. Adrenaline runned thru my body. I didn't entered the store and went right to find a policeman. I find him round the corner and explained the situation, showing him the copy of the police report. He followed me to the store, and asked for the camera. Thanks to god, the serial number was still there, not sanded or scratched (a common resource of this kind of guys). But imagine my feelings when the policeman says This is not your camera. I say What? This IS my camera, I have all the papers. He says but the last number is a 5 and your report says it is a 6. Legally this is not your camera. I felt I was going to die, but I was decided to fight to the end. I said it was my camera and that the difference was obviously a typo (I took the serial number from the webpage David Chernicoff made when he selled it to me, and he had written it with a 6) and it was a miraculously coincidence the lens number was the same (the guy of the store was stupid enough as to leave the original lens on camera, despite having another 50 1.7 and 50 2 in the cabinet). This IS my camera, and you know it. I want to do all necessary to recover it. The police man said ok I will call reinforcement and start the procedure. I said ok. While we were waiting, this policeman told me They aren't going to give you it. The serial number is not the same. I said THey will, believe me. I was hypernervous. The police car took 45 minutes to arrive. The second policeman (far more friendly) entered the store and asked for the camera. The store guy told him The serial no. is not the same, and this second policeman, thanks to all gods, was more aged, with worst eyesight, and told, yes it is, this is a 6. I told him, no it's a 5 but it's obvious now that's very easy to misread, and the lens has the same number. He said I was right, and asked me to leave the store for a moment to make some kind of arrangement with the guy. 5 minutes later, he calls me and tells me the guy has something to say. This m..fu..er tells me Give me the 150 bucks I paid for it and it's yours I said What? Are you kidding? I already payed for it. It costed me a month of salary, I had to buy it from usa, a guy showed me a gun, and now you ask me to pay for something that's already mine? Come on! (I was starting to really upset. The policemen took a really passive, contemplative attitude). He told me Ok, let's share the cost, fifty and fifty, I couldn't believe it. I insisted I will not pay a cent, I will take him to court. The situation continued this way for about another 45 minutes, and finally he accepted he was lost and gave me the camera. I finally told him: And please don't tell me I have to pay you, you still have my 100 macro. In fact it was thanks to it I discovered you. Don't worry I don't have the serial no., so I can't recover it, but please don't fuck with me. Bye. He put his best surprise face, neglecting it. I say yes, yes, bye. So, after two hours of fighting, I leaved the store with my camera. The police asked some more data, a handshake and I went back to work with the biggest smile and happiness you can imagine. Back in the office, I received the congrats of all my coworkers, who knew of my

How it SOUNDS
I was just taking some shots of my daughter with my A3000. I hadn't used it much since I got my MZ-5N and I was struck by how much cooler it sounds than the newer camera. There's a definite KA-chunk with the A3000 followed by the winder. The winder sounds like it's working a bit to advance the film. On the MZ 5N, it's much more sterile. The mirror/shudder noise is relatively non-existent and the winder sounds less interesting. Sounds a lot more like my Kodak advantix PS than the sound in my head that represents expensive(good?) cameras. (Think early 80's pop song by the J. Giles Band Freeze Frame) I don't have a lot of experience with SLR cameras. The two I have are the only ones I've messed with for any length of time. I guess I'll have to buy a bunch of cameras to evaluate the noises they make so I can report to the list...:) Cory Waters Thinking my wife won't buy that particular reasoning and will counter any enableing that might flow from other list members. :( - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Were you using the built-in flash past 10 feet or letting it provide the majority of light for the exposure? What could have caused it, do you think? I'm chalking it up to plane-old inexperience. I was using a dedicated for Pentax JCPenny non-TTL flash (Only flash I have). I hadn't really used that flash on the 5N yet so I didn't know how it would perform, especially in a large room or on groups of people. I had the flash set to auto-mode. The setting on the flash calls for F8 when using ISO400 film. Probably a combination of the flash reading the room's lighting wrong and the distances being too high. I thought that the sync speed might have been too high but the flash's manual says it was set-up for M series cameras and most of them sync around 1/100 as well (per Boz's site). Did I mention that pictures taken with my A3000 and the same flash came out ok, save for the poor composition? The A3000 syncs at 1/60. I also took a couple shots with the flash on manual mode (with the 5n) that came out OVERexposed due to my not setting the aperture right. SO Learned that with the settings recommended, it'll underexpose with the flash set to auto. Probably had enough light output to expose correctly if I could have figured out the aperture setting needed. OH well. Live and learn. At lease they weren't paying me. I agree with some others that I would like the shot to include more of the stadium and less of the track in front of the runners. I would also like to see a little more space to each side, though I think you said there were offending items to each side that you chose to omit. Love how you were able to capture the runners at various stages of their finish-line stride. It's good to get all the runners in a single shot like that. I understand you were actually in the run-off area. It's an extraordinary place to be for that race, those guys seem like they would be so focused on their race that they'd run you over in a heartbeat and get up wondering what happened. Keep your head up mate. Looks like they were all pretty close at the end, who won? Our Lady Of Three Graces --Jim Brooks I was struck by the ghostly look of the faces. The grain is a little distracting. I'd like to see a little more definition in the face on the right, though that might lessen the ghost-effect I like so much. Why are the noses glowing? I find it amazing that this is a photo of statues outside. It's something I'd like to see in person. I would really like to see the rest of the statues, I'm curious to see how the faces are portrayed in real-life :) Alto -- D. Glenn Arthur Jr. This is an interesting shot. I know I would have included the whole instrument, probably to the detriment of the image. That lavender tint in combination with the star filter reminds me of the Seventies and ABBA for some reason. The watch is distracting. Three flashes eh? Some day I may work that hard and achieve a nice images like this. Probably not though Where's the other hand? Of course, I could be full of it. I don't really know anything about pictures anyway :))) Cory Waters Atlanta, GA USA - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Pentax Users Gallery (PUG) ppro So Paul, When I'm out passing film back and forth in my new MZ-5n while my Kalimar zoom is mounted (you don't think I'd have a Pentax lens if I had some money?), I'm not a Pentax user but If I mount my Pentax lens I am? IMO, this makes no sense. If you are using anything Pentax, you are a Pentax user. Perhaps I should subscribe to the Pentax Bodied But Sometimes Other Manufacturer's Lenses Mailing list The rule works for me in it's currently posted form: 9. Re: picking black and white print film
I have used Tri-X with good results. I do NOT like the kind-of BW films (Kodak) that can be processed with normal color processing. They have a tint that I find yucky. So, if you can have the developing works for about $60, how about some recommendations from the list on what tanks, reels, chemicals, etc. to buy as a beginner? It's such a pain to get BW developed 'round here. I found some interesting information on developing BW film here: http://www.photogs.com/bwworld/bwresources.html Cory Waters Atlanta, GA USA liking his new MZ5-n a LOT :) - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: new camera
Interesting how this thread has progressed I have years time and effort invested in Wife V1.7 (1.7 = 7 annual upgrades of version 1.0). I acquired her as a version of Girlfriend long time ago. I've even had a little (VERY little) success over the years adapting the application for my specific needs and acquiring the plug-ins Child 1.3 and 2.1.5. Both these applications are very problematic and requiring a LOT of time to customize with varying results that may not be fully realized for many years. Not to mention a significant financial investment and a host of specialized technicians and caregivers. The thought of upgrading or switching platforms at this time is very scary. Especially since I have a good working relationship with the software providers (in-laws inc.).
