Re: Cover Shot

2001-12-22 Thread Dave Weiss

Tom,

What I noticed is that it looks like it was set-up for a cover shot. That
is, I can easily visualize where they would put in the magazine title, story
names, etc, (all that lettering) as the left hand side of the picture and
upper part lack some detail. I might be mistaken, but I think these type of
spacing issues are relatively important.

On my monitor, the pink nicely compliments the blue in a pastelish sort of
way.

Nice picture in any event. Looking at it evokes thoughts of yesteryear.

Pop Photo Winners

2001-12-20 Thread Dave Weiss

Well, now, amazing as it must seem, the grand prize winner in popular
photograpy's annual contest is a pentax user. I personally can't stand this
type of overmanipulated montage but someone must enjoy it. Anyone on the
list have an opinion on this picture? What about the glamour first prize
winner? What is this, james bond circa 1974?

On the other hand, the candid/humor winner is really piglishes and the
photojournalism winner, the world beaten faces of those girls is just right.
I won't even get into what is written on that pole!

Pentax Ads

2001-12-09 Thread Dave Weiss

Hey,

I saw in today's newspaper an ad from a camera dealer selling optio 300's,
they were pushing its small size, and they had a picture of a ant climbing
up a tree with the camera in its mandibles! Kind of cute. The caption
reads "Photo is a modest exaggeration." Anyone else seen anything similar
to this? I think at least one camera store owner would agree with me in
that Pentax noticed how well Elphs sold over the past few years and decided
to get that market.

The camera store, btw, is Dodd camera, local to the Cleveland area I
believe.

They also show that crocidile hunter guy with crocs snapping at his heals
which is somehow suppose to make us want to bring a pentax with us on our
adventures? Not sure hwo effective that is.

Say, here is a potential dumb thread, how would you advertise your favorite
pentax camera? It has got to be better than the croc hunter ad. Maybe we
could award a prize for creativity. I have a few items floating around

Re: Which 100 mm Macro ?

Dan;

Why the negative comment at the end? Is the FA a bit cheap feeling or is it
the optical quality that is bothering you?

Might you know any difference between the various tamron offerings? Does
anyone know what the diffence between the FA 90f2.8 and f2.5 are? It looks
like the newer version is a bit lighter? I am getting conflicting
information.

I've got the FA 100/2.8 (EX from KEH) and it is my most freq. used lens. The
other serious contender was the Tamron SP 90/2.8. From the samples photos
I've seen (and my own with the FA 100/2.8) the two are very close in
quality. The Tamron may have slight edge as far as bokeh is concerned.
Cheaper price and Pentax logo ended up being the deciding factor for me
(still not sure I made the right choice).

Which 100 mm Macro?

2001-12-01 Thread Dave Weiss

Hi,

I was hoping that the friendly folks on the list could help me decide on a
macro lens, roughly in the 100 mm range, prefer 1:1 but 1:2 okay.
I would like to take casual portraits with it and an occasional macro shot.
My main concern is optical quality.

I noticed that the Macro 100mm f/3.5 SMCP-FA Auto Focus Lens is fairly
inexpensive new... any particular reason? Is optical quality good? I had
been set on buying a 100f4.0 M. I use to have one and liked it as far as
optical quality.

I also noticed several Tamron 90 mm adaptall lenses. I have often read on
the list that tamron AF are well respected. I would be fine without the AF
capability. How are those? There seems to be several variations--anyone
know anything about these?

thanks

Shutter Vibration Tested (RE: K2 shutter vibration question)

2001-10-26 Thread Dave Weiss

The following is from Peter:

Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 03:25:33 +
From: "Peter Spiro" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: RE: K2 shutter vibration question

Anybody who has a K2 can test for this quite easily.Lock up the mirror,
set the shutter speed to B, and release the shutter with a cable release,
holding it open. Watch for ripples in the water. If the camera is good,
the ripples should be minimal. Then let the shutter close, and see if most
of the ripple action is concentrated at that end of the cycle. I hope
somebody tries this, and reports back to the group, to clarify this issue.
I will be happy to revise my opinion of what is in many ways a fine camera.

(I just did this test with my MX, at 1 second exposure, with the mirror
locked up. Vibrations when the shutter opened were almost non-existent.
BTW, on my MX the quasi-MLU does not seem to work at B.)

Hi Peter et. al.:

Okay, Peter, I tried the water test with the following cameras:

SPII
K1000
MeSuper
LX
K2

I did this with much trepidation as I had a bad experience Wednesday with
water and camera combination (I dropped my Super Program in creek! Yikes,
what a feeling!)

I put each camera on a wooden cutting board and put a wash rag under the
lens to cushion it a bit. I balanced a coffee mug 2/3 full of water and
fired the shutter in "B" and watched for ripples. I re-ran all the cameras
several times, checking again and again and finally checking the cameras in
order of ranking.

In general, the initial slap of the shutter was much less than the return.
I would say roughly 50% less. Suprising to me was that the mirror lock up
did make more difference than it did.

The following would be my SUBJECTIVE ranking of initial vibrations--

Top 2 were close but

1. k1000 (very short waves, low amplitude)
2. LX - mirror up (similar to k1000, longer waves)

Another close grouping

3. SPII (slightly longer waves than No. 2)
4. LX - mirror down (very similar to the SPII, slight more amplitude)

Much worse than above

5. K2 - mirror up (long wave, a bit more amplitude than No. 4)
6. K2 - mirror down (a bit longer wave and amplitude than No. 5)
7. MeSuper - (longest wave, amplitude)

The return curtain vibrations rankings were similar, maybe less difference
between the LX, SPII grouping and the K2 MeSuper grouping. And I love that
MeSuper! Ah well.

As far as the K2 is concerned, I am sad to report that the initial slap,
while less then the return curtain vibration, was still substantial, in my
less than expert opinion.

I hope someone else tries this as I do not want to be the final word on this
subject.

My brother bought one and he let me play with it last Friday for about 30
minutes. It is pretty impressive in size and quality feel. Very tiny and
seems very sturdy. It does get a little warm along the front side in one
area. I have nothing to compare it to, but it certainly is no stinker. I
was fairly impressed with the quality of the zoom lens. I found it strange
how I had no desire to put my eye up to the viewfinder and just looked at
the LCD on the back to frame the shot. It was very easy to get the picture
onto a tv screen.

OT: Re: Finally a bargain

2001-08-06 Thread Dave Weiss

Eric;

I checked the battery on my multimeter and it is a bit weak (getting about
3.8 v, it should be 4.5v). I was ready to give up on it, figuring the
battery would not be available. I am going to contact polaroid to see if
the batteries are still available.

My dad was a big fan of polaroids so this is a semi-nostalgic journey for
me. I remember doing some physics labs in college (around 1980) and using a
polaroid with b&w film to show the trajectory motion of a ball (using a
strobe light in a darkened room). I am now a science teacher and so I was
thinking of using it for that in addition to just playing with it. Computer
simulations just do not seem as effective in teaching this. The kids
believe you can get a computer to show anything; it just doesn't seem real
to them.

Now you know the rest of the story!

Dave,

Definately give that Polaroid a try. I picked up a Model 250 at an auction
a couple of years ago for $1. The camera looks and works like brand new. I

occaisionally take it out and shoot with it and I find it quite fun. The
camera is well built, the zeiss rangefinder is fun to use and the instant
print is great for feedback. I learn a lot from the instant feedback since
I usually shoot 35mm slides and get them developed through the mail (2 week
turnaround - no local processors). The polaroid costs about $1 per shot - I

usually shoot type 669 color film. The polaroid look is definately
different than 35mm. I believe batteries are still available direct from
Polaroid - or hook up some AA bateries to get the proper voltage (3V or 4.5V

.. can't remember).

Finally a bargain

2001-08-04 Thread Dave Weiss

Hi all;

Well, finally it happened. After all these years reading how pdml members
find lx's at garage sales for $10 or FA 24* lenses in trade for a moldy
beanie baby, I bought today a box of photo stuff for $17.
It contained a polaroid 250 Land camera, a bell and howell duolex-s movie
camera and (drum roll please) an all black rollei 35 s in mint condition. I
am giddy with glee, grinning from ear to ear. What a strange little camera!
Talk about non-intuitive controls! This must take the cake. Luckily, it
came with an owners manual. I am anxious to run some film with it. Also
picked up a spotmatic with case and super tak 501.4. Not at such a great
deal, but the condition was also near mint (no scratches on the base plate.
Ah, my wife for the first time, is happy after I bought photo equipment.
Very strange

I actually want to try to use the polaroid but the B&H will probably be
ebayed. Both of these are in near mint condition. Too bad the film for the
polaroid is so expensive ($7.50 per B&H).

Just had to share.

Hi all,

I'm hoping some members from our Midwest contingent can offer a bit of

few days to Cleveland for a short vacation visit to Six Flags amusement
.

Bill Peifer
Rochester, NY

Bill;

I am not sure how long you will be in town or when, but in no particular
order, here are a few things I like:

1. Near the end of East 9th Street, you have the Rock n Roll Hall of fame
(special John Lennon exhibit), USS Cod (WWII submarine, tours), USS Mather
(ore ship, tours), Tall ships (schooners and such, tours through this
weekend, sailing away on sunday), Great Lakes Science Center (Omnimax
theater is showing the Amazon and Amazing Caves depending on time) and the
Goodtime III which has very nice tours of the Cuyohoga River where you can
observe just about every imaginable type of bridge (scissors, lift, etc).

2. University Circle Cleveland Museum of Art, ("The Model Wife" exhibit is
of particular interest, also did a nice job of renovating its knights armor
exhibit) the Crawford Auto museum (great vintage stuff), Children's Museum
(totally interactive, your grandkids would love this), Hershey Children's
Garden (giant tree house and kids interactive stuff, next to the Botanical
Gardens which is mostly in renovation right now) Natural History museum,
Health Museum, Severance Hall (home of the Cleveland Orchestra, very pretty
inside, tours, Cain Park Arts festival (this weekend). Little Italy is in
this area if you like good Italian food.

3. Miscellaneous. Terminal Tower (observation deck on the 42 floor),
Cleveland Library Garden (small neat reading area), Lolley the Trolley tours
of Cleveland (nice overview), Lake Farm Park (nice for kids), the Cleveland
Zoo (nice, especially the rain forest), metroparks for picnicing, Tower City
(terminal tower) for shopping. About 2 hours to the west are Cedar Point
Amusement Park (a most amazing variety of roller coasters, the world's
tallest?) and the Lake Erie islands (fishing and general fooling around).
About 1 hour to the east is Mentor Headlands which is a very nice beach if
you like sand and water.

Be sure to bring bathing suits with you to Six Flags and get ready to walk
across that %@*)!@# boardwalk.

Well, that should keep you busy.

Me Super Fixer?

Hello all;

I have been in contact with a guy named Klaus
Garcia who has offered to fix my Me Super for
what I consider to be a small sum. My Me Super
does not advance the film at first, and then,
after retrying about 50 times, it will advance it
every third time, then every other time, then
everytime. If it sits again for awhile, this
process must be done again. Anyhow, he seems
knowledgable. He says it is a "gummy mechanism
caused by breakdown of mirror charge arm return
damper."

I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything good or
bad about him. If not, perhaps I will play guinea pig
for the list and let you know how it goes. He is from
California, btw.

I would send it to Pentax for a go through, since they still work on them.
What are the first 3 or 4 serial numbers? There is a web page at:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~cam/serial/
that kind of gives you a rough idea when they were made.
You really will enjoy this masterpiece of a camera. Just do not get
addicted to the accessories .

Thanks, Steve, I feel the need for accessories already!

I looked at the site you referenced above, and it mentions a roller that
when present can help determine the age of the camera. Are they refering to
the roller that would be on the back of the camera that would be right
around the take up spool? This LX does not have one.

Could you tell me what the two brass protrusions are below the pc sockets on
the front of the camera?

thanks

dave

Just serviced but without a mirror form? Sounds like a rip-off. Replace the
form is easy, but the condition like this might indicate more problems have
yet to come. If you intend to keep it, I "guess" you would need another
USD2xx at least for the repair bill in the near future.

Alan;

Yeah, I am starting to lean this way. It is hard to take another
USD200 hit, but maybe it has to be. Paul also was of like mind.

For some of you old timers, the guy who sold me the camera was
Bruce F. (witholding last name). This isn't the same Bruce who use to be on
this list, is it? (Maybe I am thinking of another list).
Was it Bruce R. on this list? Is he still around?

If all that needs replaced is the foam, that's probably about $50. Note: The

Thanks, Bob. I took the LX to a local camera shop, and the repair guy would
not fix it as he did not have self-adhesive foam of that size. He said he
did not want to risk glueing in something and having the glue spill on the
screen. Well, he had no screen removal tool either (he has not seen an LX
in many moons). The whole deal is getting very sour to me.

Old (generally):
   ASA to 1600
   KX style shutter lock
Exposure comp button does not light viewfinder LEDs.

New (generally):
   ASA to 3200
   Shell style shutter lock
Exposure comp button lights viewfinder LEDs.

What the heck is KX style shutter lock? The LX I have before me has ASA up
to 3200, but exp comp button does not light the viewfinder LED's. The
number on the baseplate is 524.

thanks

LX Mania: Advice needed or a cure?

2001-02-12 Thread Dave Weiss

Hi all;

I finally dipped my toe into that rarified pool of LX owners and purchased
said camera via ebay for $465 including FA-1 finder and
50f2.0 m lens. No strap or lens cap. I thought this a pretty decent price.
Anyhow, one of the selling points to me was that it was advertised as being
"just serviced" lubed and adjusted, seals replaced As I eagerly ripped
it out of the package and tripped the shutter a few times, I noticed a
rather noisy mirror return. Looking inside, low and behold, no foam to
insulate the mirror shock!

The camera is in otherwise very good condition, just a bit of wear around
each strap lug, a minor scratch on the finder, bottom plate actually pretty
good. Other functions seem fine. I believe it is an older LX, although I
am not positive.

Could anyone give me an opinion on whether I have been had/whether it would
be a good idea to fix myself/what this might cost to replace by camera
person.

I also notice a bit of foam near the back of the mirror where it pivots. Is
this suppose to be there? It is small, about 1/4 inch long, 1/8 inch wide.
It is actually on the right wall as you face the front of the camera. Could
this be a remnant from a previous fix? On the left side, there is a sticky
area, maybe a bit of goo from old foam in about the same place.

If I would try to repair myself, what is the proper glue, what would clean
up the goo that is left? Where would one get the foam? My regrets in
advance for not copying advice on foam in the past, but I never needed that
advice before.

I know replacing the foam has come up before, so if people want to email me
personally so as not to bore the rest of the list, that would be fine with
me.

Any and all advice welcomed.

300 f4.0 revisited

2001-02-03 Thread Dave Weiss

Hi all;

I recently purchased a 300f4.0 (k) lens from KEH. After having lost several
Ebay auctions, I just couldn't get the bad taste out of my mouth any other
way! Argghhh! That 300m* on Ebay just did not find its way into my
collection. I will be receiving my 300f4.0 in a few days and was wondering:

1. According to Boz's site, the optical formula is 7 elements in 5 groups
while all the subsequent 300 lenses were 7-8 or 7-9. What specifically
would more elements correct? Chromatic abberation? Pincushion? I am going
to put the lens through some tests and thought I might look rather closely
at what pentax thought was its shortcomings.

2. Should I expect a tripod mount with this particular lens?

3. I could not find any specific info and the smc tak version to compare it
to, but have seen the positive reviews it gathered a few weeks ago on this
list. Would this be one of the kmounts which is essentially a redone
screwmount lens?

Any comments would be appreciated.

thanks much

dave

Thanks for linking that picture, and a very nice one at that! You sure have
a lot of depth of field in that shot.

Wow, that is some lens, Bill. Is that the smc tak version? Did you get a
hood with it or did you buy an aftermarket brand?
