We're still part of The Commonwealth and Queen Elizabeth II is still
officially our head of state.

But that doesn't concern me. They can have their grey rock, and I'll
enjoy our red one surrounded by warm water:

Not a bad way to spend a 43°C summers day: scuba diving & enjoying all

Re: Why Pentax?

2010-01-16 Thread David Savage
2010/1/16 Igor Roshchin :
> I would be glad to hear what others have to say about these thoughts.

My Pentax history

In the northern winter of '93/'94 I was travelling around Alberta &
B.C. with my dad, happily snapping away with my first SLR, Minolta
SRT-101.

It was an awesome trip & I got to see my shots quite soon after taking
them because we were having the film processed locally almost straight
away (this is very cool when driving around meeting family and being
able to show them photos from where you have been, and more importantly
who you had just seen).

Then one day I walked into a mall and made the mistake of visiting
some hole-in-the wall photographic store. I picked up a brochure for
the P/Pz-20. Much paging through said brochure saw me fall in love. My
uncle took me to his local dealer in Red Deer (McBain Camera) some
weeks later. The rest as they say is history.

I had that camera and the FA 28-105mm PZ for many years and it served
me well. I drifted away from photography. But my interest was
rekindled with the news of the release of it *istD. I started shooting
film again and I ordered my first Ltd. Lens (31mm) when I went in to
pick up the lens, I asked to have a look at the *istD. Needless to say
that that was a very expensive day.

The purchase of that first DSLR saw me invest in a lot more glass. FA
31mm, FA 50mm, FA 77mm, FA 80-200mm f2.8, FA 200mm f2.8, FA 300mm
f4.5.etc, etc, etc...

Then came the K10D, followed by the K20D. The cameras were great, but
my needs were changing and the persistence of high ISO noise & sensor
amp glow continually frustrated me.

I've now been shooting almost exclusively with the D700 for about
18months. I've shot more frames on that body than I did with the
K10/20D combined.

I'm happy I made the change. Nikon glass is crap by comparison, but
the quality of camera, and the IQ makes up for it.

Cheers,

Dave

I've said it before but I'll say it again. IMHO I think Pentax should
become a 3rd party lens manufacturer.

Designing quality optics is what they do best & I think they could

Re: How useful is SDM?

2010-01-12 Thread David Savage
Here's a question for the K7 crowd...

How many AF points does it have?

A couple of people during this discussion have poo poo'ed the need for
a swag of AF points, but one of the things I like about the D700's 51
point AF is I can select 1 particular point and with the flick of a
switch the surrounding 8 points come into the equation (think 3x3
grid).

I find this really useful when shooting action and the subject is
moving toward/away from me.

Flick the above mentioned switch again ane all 51 points come into
play with surprisingly accurate results.

The main benefit of in lens AF motors for Pentax users is how quiet it
is. Compared to my Nikon kit, the gear noise from Pentax lenses & in
body motors is horrendous.

I'd also say it's slightly faster, but I reiterate that the main bonus
is near silent AF operation.

YMMV

OT PESO - Condensate

G'day All,

While it may be cold in where a lot of you are, it was bloody hot here
today. I was sitting in front of the computer when I noticed my bottle
of water backlit by the monitor:

Direct link (~350kb)

Enjoy.

Re: Wide angle for K-X?

2010-01-03 Thread David Savage
I agree, but it's the DOF control offered by the fast stuff that gives
creative possibilities.

I just bought the Nikon 85mm f1.4. Sure, it's not at it's best at that
aperture, but the ability selectively isolate details and surround
them with soft bokeh goodness is awesome.

I agree. That's not a big difference. But the big plus for me with the K7
has been the exposure accuracy. No comparison between that camera and the

metering system as the K20. It's considerably less sophisticated in that
regard. That would be the deal breaker for me. Plus, I think it's even
smaller. The K7 is borderline in that regard for me, even with the battery
grip installed. I need mass for handholding. As far as low light is
concerned, I've found the K7 to be quite adequate at 3200 with accurate
exposure, and that's all I need. My commercial work is never low light. I
do shoot lowlight snaps of Grace and pics for grins, but those aren't

Good points all.

This was the free form session at the end of the workshop where we
were basically pointed at the models, handed some lights & reflectors
and told "put what you've been shown over the last day and a bit and
see what you can come up with"

I admit I need more practice. Oh well. I'm willing to suffer for this "art".
