Re: Pentax K-30 experience
Nice review. Shutter is noisy just that would be a big step back for me; I found the quiet shutter of the K-5 to be a valuable asset for candids; it was an evolution for me: *istDS' shutter noise could wake the dead, K10D felt much better, but K20D made me realise how loud a K10D it was, finally the K5 feels like the pinnacle of Pentax DSLR shutter quietness evolution (I'm guessing the K7 was the same, never tried one). Before using a K5 I considered the original istD the most acceptable of the pentax digitals when it comes to shutter noise. On Mon, Aug 13, 2012 at 11:09 AM, Margus Männik mar...@eol.ee wrote: Now I have walked a week with (literally) K-30 in one hand and K-5 in other. I wrote a review for our local press, but obviously I'm not going to translate the whole thing, but just want to share some points (and please forgive me if my English is not good enough). + Nice body. I'm not very happy with K-7/K-5 body design (especially w/o battery grip attached) and K-30 feels better. First it looks a bit suspicious, but it's really comfortable in hand, even for a long carrying/shooting. + Two-wheel user interface. I've never liked single-wheel cameras like K-r (and many other). Considering the price, it's really nice feature. + Very good viewfinder and possibility to change focusing screen. Once again, I wouldn't expect those features from less-than-top-line camera, especially Pentax (who has such a short line of cameras). + The picture quality is nearly the same compared to K-5 under ~ISO 6400. I've really compared around 100 parallel shots and just sometimes K-5 images seem to have a tiny bit more dynamic range. At very high ISOs K-30 noise becomes more prominent and has different nature (rougher grain). Considering that Pentax K-5 have been named as the very best APS-C SLR, it seems that now the second best is also Pentax. + Video quality is superior to K-5. It's not much surprising as K-30 utilizes the same PRIME M processor that we've already seen in K-01. Focusing in video mode has made a significant leap forward compared both to K-5 and K-01. 0 Much praised modifications to focusing system are nearly unnoticeable. K-30 may be a bit more self-confident with SDM lenses, but can not drive older ones as fast as K-5. - Battery life is not impressive and there's no battery grip either. Of course, 450 shots per charging is not THAT bad, but serious enthusiasts will definitely need a spare battery. - Shutter is noisy, about the same as K20D. Continuous drive at 6 fps sounds quite scary. - Video soundtrack is mono and camera has no external mic connector. - Image buffer could be larger. Nowadays the memory chips are inexpensive, after all. All together, we have got an really impressive camera. IQ is much better than K20D and almost the same as K-5. My personal favorite is still K-5 (I need battery grip and don't care about video), but I'm quite sure many existing pentaxians will prefer K-30. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I decided to include it in the print-a-day project because of the big areas of blue sky. In the past, with other printers, I've had trouble with this type of gradient. There can also be an issue with blue and cyan. The representation of this part of the color space can differ between monitor and paper. I added the vignette to help define the border. I had not felt that was necessary until I saw the printed version. Now that I've seen it, I prefer the version with the vignette. The final print and a nice smooth gradient with no banding. Re: How much difference does optimizing the aperture make?
I personally know by memory for the prime lenses I used the most, and out of personal experimentation in real world shooting -just because I like to know- although P mode with MTF program will get you there easily. For the non-chip lenses I guess a couple of clicks from wide open. The ones for me that I found is worth knowing (partly because I used them often) are the 43/1.9 (some magic happens at f4 and 5.6), 31/1.8 (f5.6), 21/3.2 (f8) and 15/4 (f8 or f11). In some cases finding those sweet spots rekindled some lens love. And I also know that I get slightly sharper images with the 35/2 than the 31/1.8 @f2, that the DA40/2.8 is slightly sharper at 2.8 than the 43/1.9 at f2.8 and that the 50/1.4 gets ok at f2; for the rest I don't care that much/don't know/don't shoot with them that often Photozone.de has charts that I found pretty accurate for the lenses I have; and I used them just to answer questions like is the 16-45 better @ 16 than the 12-24 @ 16? without having to test myself (which I won't do anyway) On Mon, Jun 4, 2012 at 6:22 PM, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote: I was thinking about my quest for sharpness, and was considering trying to do some research into what the aperture sweet spot is for each lens, and was wondering if anyone had already made a chart of them. Then I wondered how much it really matters. I've heard a couple of stops down from wide open, anywhere between f/8 and f/16, and a couple other rules of thumb. I do know that on some lenses, particularly the FA50/1.4, that stopping it down a couple of stops from wide open, makes a huge difference. And I suspect that if you look on an MTF chart, you might be able to easily see the difference between f/4 and f/8, but is there a practical noticeable difference? There is also the question of sharpness at the critical focus distance, and overall sharpness. That a lens might be sharper at f/4 than f/16 at the focal distance, but with a lot more depth of field, more of the photo will be sharper at f/16, than at f/64. I'm primarily interested in answers based on personal, practical experience, rather than theory. My hunch is that as long as I'm not too close to wide open, or pushing diffraction limits, optimizing aperture for sharpness is not the most productive place to spend my time and energy. That I'm generally best optimizing the aperture for the picture, and not trying to optimize the aperture for MTF. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: When high ISO performance matters (was: Pentax K-Q adapter and such)
Dario, I'm not participating of the high ISO discussion, but those first two shots are awesome. On Tue, Sep 13, 2011 at 3:21 AM, Dario Bonazza dario.bona...@virgilio.it wrote: To me, high-ISO performance and dynamic range are paramount and are the single most important feature in choosing a SLR these days. Hence, 3-4 extra stops would have come in handy (i.e. ISO 100,000). This way, I'm going to supply a 'creative blur' image. Last year, neither the K20D nor the K-7 were able to manage situations of this kind and sometimes I had to give up shooting. This year, the K-5 came to rescue. ISO 10,000, DA* 50-135mm @ 85mm f/3.2, 1/60s: www.dariobonazza.com/public/K5_23850x.jpg In this case, ISO 10,000 was on the verge of getting the required picture. Of course, a few extra stops would have allowed higher IQ. ISO 8,000, DA* 50-135mm @ 55mm f/3.2, 1/60s: www.dariobonazza.com/public/K5_23921x.jpg In this case, ISO 8,000 was again on the verge for the required picture, and I was able to get it only because I took them at the highest point of their jump. Having an extra margin would be welcome. I have to mention that flash was strictly forbidden. I understand not everybody is facing such challenges, but I do appreciate high ISO settings with good noise performance. Back to the undergrowth/corn: I have many shots taken from a few feet to the left, a point which allows me to look along the roadside edge of the corn field. And some from a bit further back, higher on the crown of the road we were on. I felt that this one that used the corn field as the foreground was less cluttered and allowed the focus to be on the barn and moon. Thanks for looking Jack! stan On Sep 11, 2011, at 10:32 PM, Jack Davis wrote: Really well done exposure balance. If only the barn were somewhat more prominent. That's good to know, haven't been online that much. When we moved to the current host, in 2006, I didn't carry over a local archive, since we were pretty well established on mail-archive by then. There may be a little gap there around that time, due to propagation and merging issues, but it's pretty complete. This brings up something I'd like to ask The List about. When in April we had to move to another server, our hosting company realized we were occupying a largish amount of server real estate, and told me it would cost an extra ten bucks a month to continue to house the archives. At the time I told them to go ahead, but it's stayed in my mind, given that the mail-archive space gets far more traffic, so let's put it to a vote. Do we want to keep the local archive, or not? Let me know here or off-list. Now would also be a good time to chunk a couple bucks toward the PDML fund, if you'd like. It's certainly not required, but will help offset some of the costs. Also, I don't think anyone cares one way or the other, but yes, I'm still here. Stepping out of my silence to thank Christine publicly -and Mark for the print- it looks beautiful decorating my place -it was worth the wait (including some extra strike delay thanks to our fine postal service). Re: Prophoto RGB, gamma and other Qs
Thanks Godfrey, I went with the Eye One Display 2 based on your advice -and with Bill Robb later confirmation as well. Today I got a batch of prints done at my local Photo Lab (http://www.pikto.ca/). It's close to my place and has profiles available -I used their Frontier+Fuji Matte Paper. I`m happy with the result, even viewing under tungsten light prints match fairly well -had to play with some of the options in photoshop soft proof menu though. Finally no more darker prints: thanks to Mark's Monitor tips and the i1 calibration recommended by Godfrey, now I have an affordable color calibrated setup and I even successfully played with skin tones (wouldn't dare before) -testing lightroom as well, found that nudging the red and orange I get better skin tones (Hue Red +20, Lum Orange +18 and Sat Red -9) still found Capture One pro skin tools more useful though (using both tools on trial for now). And speaking on Lightroom V3, that BW module is awesome -better than anything I tried other than PS. Again, it must be emphasized that I have been more than happy to do this, as well as the maintenance over the years. I've just added a donation button to the pdml.net site. It looks like shite right now, and I'm hoping to re-write the page to look better some time this weekend; keep in mind that I am single-parenting this week while Mrs. List Guy visits her grandmother in Colorado, so time is hard to come by. Re: Chicago
Regarding photography, these are my problems defining art exclusively by intent: +When I take a photo I always have the intention of creating an image, the same goes when my grandmother takes a photo. Does this fact declare as artists? If that intention is not good then what intention/s define art? Art is defined by the intention of making art? +An artist's father owns a company that cleans dead people's apartments. Possessions that are not claimed -like photos, in most cases family snapshots- are selected by the artist with the intention of communicating the value of certain aesthetic. Most of these photos where not created with the intention of creating art, they become art by the view of the artist that is showing them. By this extreme example you can say that any photo is potentially art, waiting to be interpreted as that by an artist. Intent needs to exist before the photo is created or can be found after its creation? +What about Lartigue? He's the father of vernacular photography, lots of these photos are the equivalent of today's snapshots, he just happened to be wealthy enough to have access to technology that wasn't easily available to the rest. I don't think that when John Szarkowski found his work he pondered about intent. +The same goes with the example of the NY Crime Scene photos that I posted before. On Tue, May 18, 2010 at 4:33 PM, eckinator eckina...@gmail.com wrote: 2010/5/18 Tom C caka...@gmail.com: On Tue, May 18, 2010 at 2:55 PM, steve harley p...@paper-ape.com wrote: another problem with requiring intent is how does the viewer know about the intent ... is it always obvious? is any intent sufficient? must one meet or learn about the artist as well as experience the art? what if we perceive intent where there is none? what if we perceive no intent where there is some? what about art that deliberately manipulates the perception of intent? Well I have my simple answer to that. 1. I can tell art even when it's art I don't like. There's a ton of art that I do not like or that I actually detest, or I think 'why would anybody do that?', yet I will admit it is art. 2. In my book if there is no intent or if the shown item (assuming we're limiting the discussion to things visible) displays no intent, then I'll conclude logically that there was no intent, so I don't define it as art. Put another way, if the maker of something deliberately produces something that is so incongruous or disharmonious, that ist's devoid of perceivable intent, then I have every right to view it in that way. I would likely view it as junk and not art. I would also venture to say that a random sampling of the general populace would view it the same way and that virtually the only ones that would view such a work as art, is the art theorists themselves. Really I've tried to see it from their point of view but I couldn't get my head up that far. Everyone of course is free to disagree. I couldn't agree more. My thoughts exactly. Definig good or bad photos around the viewer Was: What Makes a Good Photograph?
I see lots of arguments here defining good or bad around the viewer. This reminds me of this discussion I read some time ago, it's a simple thought experiment that got me thinking about why I shoot what I shoot. The premise is simple: Let's say you just emerged from a cave to find that everyone else was gone. You're the last person on the planet. None will ever follow. You have every camera ever made at your disposal, as well as unlimited lenses, film, batteries, paper, as well as crates all the world's remaining Polaroid film. Whatever you would need to shoot whatever you want for the rest of your life, without consideration of cost or effort, would be at your disposal. (Your cave is also stocked with food, water, clothes and all of that other stuff, so you won't need to expend much time or effort on basic survival.) Knowing that you will be the only one to ever, ever see your pictures, would you still bother to make them? Source: http://www.flickr.com/groups/onthestreet/discuss/72157611943044274/ On Thu, May 13, 2010 at 11:26 AM, John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com wrote: Stick my two cents in here ... for whatever it's worth. I'm one of those who doesn't get Eggelston. To me his work looks like a compilation of discarded snapshots purchased from yard sales and flea markets. But it's a matter of taste. Some people appreciate it, some people don't. Same could be said about any photographer. Annie Liebowitz has her fans ... so do Tony Sweet and Ken Rockwell. For me, a good photograph evokes a response from the viewer - it could be an emotional response or an intellectual response, but it evokes SOMETHING from the viewer other than boredom. That's why it's so hard to define a good photograph, because what evokes a response from me might not evoke one from you. There seem to be some photographs that are universally acclaimed, some that are not. How do you catalog the characteristics of those universally acclaimed photos to define goodness? What minimum of those characteristics are required for a new work to automatically become a good photograph? I don't think anyone has yet found the surefire recipe. From: Tom C Hi Doug, (take everything I say as not an argument, but more or less musing) I don't know the history of Eggleston or how/why he became famous. From the exhibit I saw, I suspect either some beatniks in a coffehouse somewhere or some art professors who talk vs. do, were looking for deeper meaning and stared at some photographs long enough until they thought that they'd found it. Realizing he could achieve fame and/or money by doing more of the same he set out to deliver what the 'intellectuals' wanted. The above may not be true, but it's the sense I get, because if I were to show a similar set of photographs, which would be quite easy to produce, I'd be uniformly chastized. If a person deliberately sets about shooting in what I'd call a 'crappy snaphot style', is it good because it was deliberate as opposed to haphazard? Or is it good because it reminds people of the way things were in years gone by and hence evokes an emotion? I called his photographs crappy because I found them largely devoid of any discernible style or intent, and I did not find them aesthetically pleasing. I did not enjoy the majority of them individually nor did I see any cohesiveness as a group. If that was what he was shooting for, he achieved it. And what I'm trying to do, somewhat clumsily, is get you to articulate those reasons. What I'm trying to get at is that we all have our templates, as photographers, and sometimes to our detriment. How often do we take the lazy way out and just rely on the rule of thirds to compose a photo instead of taking the time to think about what composition really suits the subject matter best? The rule of thirds is not the only game in town, and the same can be said for any other compositional/sharpness/exposure/color habit we get into. Yes, I deliberately tried NOT to articulate the reasons why I would consider a photograph good, and leave it open to interpretation. :-) Why? Because I KNOW, that sure as grass is green, if I elaborate on some specific criteria that someone will argue the opposite or the exception, and point out to me (as if I'm a total idiot) that I cannot be the sole arbiter of what makes a good photograph (and I can't). So I did not fall into the trap. :-) I do however agree with your statements above. The formula for making a good photograph is wide and varied, and we can easily become trapped in our formulaic way of seeing and producing. That, in essence, probably becomes our style, but it's certainly good to keep an open mind and consider that our subject at the time could posiibly benefit from a different approach than our norm. The same can be said for how we view photographs. We like best those that are like what we shoot, as photographers. The
Re: Definig good or bad photos around the viewer Was: What Makes a Good Photograph?
My conclusion was the opposite ;-) Basically this is the photo-existensial version of the if-a-tree-falls-in-the-forest-and-no-one-is-there-to-hear-it-does-it-make-a-sound question. The reason why I answered 'yes' is because I realised that there are shots that I make just for me -heck I have complete sets that I don't believe in general no one else but me will like. This doesn't mean I lack the skills to discern -with certain accuracy- what shots might appeal to some crowds: all the shots I sent for the PDML annual are the ones that I believe can stand on their own while still being truthfull to the type of photograph I like the most. This also goes with experimenting and working outside of my comfort zone, even if this means failing -for the general public- 6,000 times before I get a great shot. On Thu, May 13, 2010 at 1:42 PM, Tom C caka...@gmail.com wrote: The simple answer is No. Images are a means of communication. If there's no one to communicate with, the image is useless. In that case I'd be essentially communicating with myself from the past. Tom C. Re: What Makes a Good Photograph? Was: Chicago
I think the approach you guys are using to analyse this might be flawed for some type of work, some photos need to be evaluated as part of a whole, and even in an intended sequence (e.g. Robert Frank's The Americans). These are the photos that evaluated individualy are mundane but are elevated to a different level as part of a whole. On Wed, May 12, 2010 at 9:45 AM, Tom C caka...@gmail.com wrote: On Wed, May 12, 2010 at 12:47 AM, Doug Brewer d...@alphoto.com wrote: OK, if we're going to discuss this, first you have to define what exactly makes a good photograph, without saying a good photo is not this... or a good photo is not that... Fire when ready. Thought about in my sleep. :-) I'll cop out with the following: We and I may be mixing up the terms art and good in this discussion... oh well... There can be be no single answer to the question because photographs are taken for a variety of reasons. Some photographs are intended as a form of artistic expression while others may be simply documentary. Some are documentary of an event, say a party, while others are taken for more mundane reasons. I believe some photos are taken for practically no reason whatsoever - the person has a camera and therefore is using it (similar to what happens if you give a child a camera and they mostly, indiscriminately, start walking around actuating the shutter). (Like Eggleston, IMO, wink) There's at least two ways of defining good when it's applied to photography: 1. Good because the image fulfills the requirements for which it was taken 2. Good because the image possesses some attributes that make it stand out in a positive way Individually we all define good somewhat differently. It seems to me that invoking/or not an emotional response is not the whole thing either. First, one viewer is different from the next, so will be impacted differently. Second, the viewer may have an emotional response to the image that has little to do with the merits of the image itself. Example 1: I love my baby, so a picture of my baby invokes an emotional response. Example 2: I remember the day JFK was shot, so when I see images of that traumatic event, it invokes an emotional response. In both examples above the subject matter alone is what may produce a response. I would think that a snapshot baby picture or a hastily taken image documenting an event, likely does not qualify as art unless it invokes a response for reasons other than the subject matter itself. In the GESO I just posted of wide angle portraits. Are they good or bad? Are they art? I didn't intend them to be art. Nor would I ever submit that they are such. Yet, I took them with the sole purpose of invoking an emotional response (which from what I read is either amusement or horror). Are they good? IMO, yes, but only in that they invoked the response I was hoping for). Are they good because they possess some other qualities, such as excellent composition, lighting, exposure control? No. In the end, I suppose, the only statements I can really make that are unassailable is I like that image or I think that's a good image. My thoughts and emotions are my own and require no validation. If someone disagrees, their opposite statements are just as valid. As I said, I think the PDML exhibit in Chicago was a far better collection of images than the Eggleston exhibit. That's my opinion. For instance I saw nothing artistic or good about the photographs of a pile of garbage or the black porcelain interior of an oven. It's probably easier to define a bad photograph as opposed to a good one. A bad photograph is one that a person sees once and never cares to look at again.
