Ring Light Question . . .

2005-05-19 Thread Alexander Grigolia, Jr
I'm looking for a Ring Light for the SMC Pentax-FA 645 120mm macro.
The only Pentax Ring Light I can find is the AF-140C. This comes with
49mm, 52mm 58mm adapter rings. Unfortunately the 120mm macro has
67mm threads.

Does anyone know of a Ring Light that works with the 120mm macro?
Thanks for any information you can offer.

about getting to a library), I've been fooling around with it, not
knowing much what I've been doing. At least since I've so far only
been fiddling with BW photos, I don't have to worry about the colour
stuff, so that simplifies stuff a bit.
I must say, I'm quite blown away by what little bit I've figured out
that I can do. You know how I'm always saying, the scan of this
one's horrible? Well, it was. Not the scan, per se, but the
software I was working with was really bad.
Here's an example of a fairly notorious shot of mine (at least
notorious to me - one of my faves). Old scan:

New scan:

Now, someone tell me that isn't night and day! And that's without
really knowing too much what to do. (I did burn her ring in a bit -
kinda cool, eh? g)
So, here's a question: When I first posted this one, someone (maybe
Bruce Dayton? I can't remember) said that he suspected that there
were some highlights in the dark hair of Lucie on the left. There
were indeed some highlights on the print, and I think they've come out
a bit better on the ps version. If I wanted to bring those up a bit
more, how would I do it? Any suggestions? Everything I've tried has
looked pretty bad. Or, should I just leave it?
I'm having so much fun with this!! Thanks for your help.

Re: Minolta is game again, where is heading Pentax!?

It appears that Pentax IS coming out with a new lens line (or two)!
The SMC Pentax-D FA appears to be the new top-of-the-line lens series.
It is designed for digital quality but also covers an entire 35mm
negative! The new SMC Pentax-D FA 50mm 100mm macros are just the
first to be announced.

Not only is BH short of FA lenses but KEH in Atlanta Adorama in NYC
are short or out entirely.

Might Pentax release an entirely new lens line at Photokina? Some of
us oldtimers remember Pentax releasing an entire new lens line in the
past.

New Limited Lenses?

2002-08-09 Thread Grigolia

Is there any word that Pentax may be introducing new Limited lenses at
Photokina? I love the Limited lenses! But three lenses, no matter how
exquisite, is not enough to build a 35mm system around. (And I refuse to own
the plastic alternatives!)

If Pentax doesn't introduce new Limited lenses in September I'm dumping my
MZ-S and Spotmatic and switching to the Leica M-system. VERY unhappy with
Pentax's LACK of follow-up on the exceptional 31mm, 43mm 77mm Limited
lenses!

Re: New Limited Lenses? Don't Mean to Rant ...

2002-08-09 Thread Grigolia

Chris asks good questions about WHY I'd want a Leica rangefinder over a 35mm
SLR. First, most of my photography is now done on a medium format SLR (so I
don't need another SLR.). I'm looking for a rugged (I beat my equipment up
pretty good), compact 35mm system as a light travel kit. I shoot primarily B
W using a modified Zone system, which means I want tack sharp lenses with
high contrast. And, lastly, I neither use nor want auto anything!!!

I grew up on a Spotmatic with their solid lenses. And I've owned both the
PZ-1p and MZ-S. I love the Limited lenses, but would like a basic five-lens
kit; say, 22mm, 31mm, 43mm, 77mm, 120mm. I really don't think that asking
for a quality five-lens kit is very demanding!!! (Especially, since the 43mm
Limited lens was introduced FIVE years ago.)

Sorry, but waiting on Pentax has drawn my nerves rather tight! (And this
from a former PENTAX FAMILY member!)

Limited Lenses I'd Like to See ...

2002-06-04 Thread Grigolia

Since Photokina is only a few weeks (ok months) away, here is my dream list
of Limited lenses I'd like to see:

SMC Pentax-FA 22-44mm f/2.8 AL Limited zoom lens
SMC Pentax-FA 44-88mm f/2.8 AL Limited zoom lens
SMC Pentax-FA 88-176mm f/2.8 ED IF Limited zoom lens

I'm basing these optics on the belief that a 2:1 zoom range can deliver
excellent image quality in a small package. Plus, no one to my knowledge has
EVER used these lens lengths before. And aren't these the characteristics of
a Limited lens?

Re: Need buying advice: 67II or 645

2002-02-11 Thread Grigolia

Sid,
Just a thought, but you may have answered your own question. If 75% of
your work is landscapes and architecture it sounds like the Pentax 67 II is
what you're looking for! Since NO camera system is perfect. Go for the
system that fits your major needs.
But I've also seen fashion photographers shooting with the Pentax 67
system. So while the 67 II may not be best for casual portraits you might
find it can meet 85-90% of your needs. And that's really a VERY efficient
system!
The only thing I'd recommend is that you find a 67 user and try lugging
the 67 II with three or four lenses around for a few hours. If you don't
mind the weight, go for it!

Re: The LX Let Me Down, A Mamiya Love Affair in the Offing?

Shel,
I also looked at the Mamiya 7 II and loved it. I decided against the
Mamiya because it didn't have lenses in some of the focal lengths I wanted,
it's slow lens speed, and it's slow top shutter speed.
But if you're going to use the camera primarily tripod mounted the
Mamiya is hard to beat!!! The camera is a dream to handle. And image
sharpness is exceptional.
I finally settled on the Contax 645 because of lens selection, lens
speed, 1:4000 shutter speed, and interchangeable backs! But I really do love

PENTAX MZ-S ... Feeling Camera

I just received a new 8-page brochure on the MZ-S from Pentax Japan as
part of my PENTAX FAMILY membership. The brochure is entitled, PENTAX MZ-S

letter accompanying the brochure was in Japanese.)
The full page cover photo features a beautiful young Japanese woman in a
burgundy formal gown, with long white gloves and pearls, holding an MZ-S
(with battery grip attached). All photos in the brochure are large, sharp as
a tack color photos. All photos were taken with the MZ-S. And full photo
credits are given for each picture (photographer, lens used, and settings).
The full page photo taken with the new 31mm Limited lens is stunning.
This photo alone would convince me to purchase the 31mm lens. Super sharp!
There's also a full page photo of the MZ-S (again with battery grip
attached). Both photos of the MZ-S show the camera in black finish. And in
both photos a black 31mm Limited lens is attached. The black Limited lens
looks to be a perfect match to the black MZ-S body.

Re: Pentax FA 18/2.8 AL

2001-08-15 Thread Grigolia

Paal,
Is the new 18mm f/2.8 AL going to be a FA* lens?
This would be a natural fit with the FA* 24mm f/2.0 AL. I would also
imagine at least two additional FA* lenses, a 135mm f/2.0 ED (IF) and a 35mm
f/1.4 AL. This would give a rather complete FA* lens series for those that
require top quality fast lenses!

Pentax Battery Grip BG-10

2001-08-13 Thread Grigolia

I just received my new Battery Grip BG-10 from Adorama in NYC!!!
First impressions: Light, solid, wonderful finish, excellent ergonomic
design! Easy to install. For those of us with larger than normal hands the
MZ-S/BG-10 configuration seems a natural fit. In fact, after ten minutes of
shooting I can't imagine using the MZ-S without the battery grip!
If Pentax is indeed designing an updated LX, I recommend they include
the vertical release and molded grip of the BG-10 as part of the standard LX
II camera design!

Re: Is Pentax About to Release New Lenses?

2001-08-07 Thread Grigolia

I doubt very highly that the drop in prices was due merely to currency
fluctuations! Why were the very popular FA* 85mm f/14, FA 50mm f/1.4, FA
35mm f/2.0, FA* 24mm f/2.0 lenses, and two Limited lenses NOT effected by
these price fluctuations? Further, the price percentage drops were not
uniform as would be expected with currency fluctuations.
 Note that the FA* 28-70mm f/2.8, FA* 80-200mm f/2.8, FA 135mm f/2.8, and
FA 100mm f/2.8 macro lenses that WERE effected could all be replaced by more
modern designs.
 Again, just a thought!

Is Pentax About to Release New Lenses?

2001-08-04 Thread Grigolia

I just checked the BH web site to see if the black Limited lenses had
come in. They haven't, but a number of the FA* lens prices have dropped
dramatically:
  FA* 200mm f/2.8 dropped from $1,039.95 to $854.95
  FA* 28-70mm f/2.8 dropped from $1,064.95 to $979.95
  FA* 80-200mm f/2.8 dropped from $1,674.95 to $1,299.95
Additionally, a number of prominent FA lenses have also dropped:
  FA 100mm f/2.8 macro dropped from $559.95 to $489.95
  FA 135mm f/2.8 dropped from $349.95 to $309.95
The price drop has been selective. Less than half the Pentax lenses
show price reductions! In the past such price drops have either been made to
bring Pentax lens prices in line with the competition or to reduce stocks
prior to the release of new lenses.
With the release of the MZ-S and rumors of an updated LX, could Pentax
be considering releasing a new series of lenses? Possibly expanding the
Limited lens line? (Hey, I'm running a fever and not thinking clearly, humor
me!) :-

Cameras Professionals Use ...

2001-07-29 Thread Grigolia

The Professionals' Work section (pages 29-86) of the 2000-2001 PENTAX
PHOTO ANNUAL exhibits photographs taken with the following cameras:
  Pentax 645/645n -- 17 photographs
  Pentax MZ-3 -- 12 photographs
  Pentax 67/67 II -- 6 photographs
  Pentax LX -- 3 photographs
  Pentax MZ-5 -- 2 photographs
  Pentax Z-1p -- 2 photographs
The 42 photographs were taken by six different cameras and three
different formats! So, it would appear that even professionals can't agree
on what makes a pro camera!
Or could it be that professionals simply use what feels right to them?
 What a novel concept! :-
Oh, for the number crunchers in our group, the number of photographs
does not equal the number of pages due to the fact that a number of photos
were 2-page reproductions.

Re: New Pentax LX ... I'll Stick with MZ-S

2001-07-24 Thread Grigolia

Don't know if I'd even buy the LX. Ever since working with a friend's
Leica twenty years ago I've longed for a truly professional-quality compact
SLR. I figure the MZ-S with Limited lenses just might be the system I've
been looking for!
I shoot BW exclusively. Shoot almost entirely manually. (Except in
very low light.) And require a quality spot metering system. So why in the
world would I want a more expensive, larger camera loaded down with features
I have no need of.
If you ever get a chance, look throught the Pentax Family yearbook,
PENTAX PHOTO ANNUAL. Each volume has a section of photographs submitted by
professional photographers using Pentax equipment. The professionals use
virtually EVERY type of Pentax camera imaginable, including an occassional
point and shoot image.
The only conclusion I can draw is that it isn't the camera, it's the
photographer! If an updated LX is your dream system by all means go for it.
For me, I want a quality compact system that will give me the quality images
I desire! And the MZ-S / Limited lens combination looks to be just what I've
been hoping for!
Instead of saving up for an updated LX I'll probably be trading in my
FA* lenses for equivalent black Limited lenses as soon as the new compact
lenses are released! My days of carting around a bulky pro system are
over! I'm going compact and loving it!

Re: New Pentax LX with AF!!!!!!!!

2001-07-21 Thread Grigolia

Paal,
A new 50th anniversary LX flagship does make perfect sense. It also
explains the comparrisons of the MZ-S with the Nikon F100. The new MZ-S
new LX would offer two professional quality-build cameras with two levels of
capability. The photographer chooses what system meets his or her needs.
It will be interesting to see if the new LX will be a film based camera,
a digital camera, or possibly offer BOTH film AND digital backs! A
revolutionary approach that would guarantee if immediate acceptance and
respect!
I don't know about the Limited lenses being built for the new LX
however. I think the larger FA* lenses would be more in line with a large
new LX while the compact Limited lenses are more in line with the compact
MZ-S. We'll have to see if Pentax continues issuing BOTH Limited and FA*
lenses!
 FA* 18mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/1.8 lenses are missing from a
complete FA* lineup. Limited 16mm, 22mm, 120mm, 180mm, and 250mm lenses
would be nice additions as well.

Ordered My MZ-S ...

2001-07-12 Thread Grigolia

I finally gave in to the urge and ordered the MZ-S from BH in NYC. Not
only is the camera in stock but the price has dropped from $899.95 to
$874.95! (The price will probably drop further by Fall.)
Ever since my old Spotmatic began showing its age I've wanted a compact
pro-quality camera system. And I think the MZ-S camera with 'Limited' lenses
might fill the bill. As I shoot BW almost exclusively I don't need a lot of
bells whistles. The MZ-S' sturdy compact body and spot metering system
should satisfy my needs!
I also ordered 20 rolls of T-Max 400 so I should be able to give a
pretty thorough report in a week or two!

Prices for 'Limited' Silver Black Lenses

2001-07-12 Thread Grigolia

The Pentax Japan home page under What's New 2001.07.12 lists the
following prices for the 'Limited' silver and black lenses:
  31mm 'Limited' lens -- silver = 127,000 yen; black = 130,000 yen
  43mm 'Limited' lens -- silver = 69,500 yen; black = 72,500 yen
  77mm 'Limited' lens -- silver = 97,000 yen; black = 100,000 yen
These are, of course, prices in Japan. We should expect to pay more for
the 'Limited' black lenses (about 3 % more in Japan) but hopefully importers
will keep this increase to a minimum.

Re: A 16mm Fisheye rear filter?

Pentax-A 16mm f/2.8 fish-eye lens Danilo states, Consisting of nine elements

Since the included four filters can't fit in front of the lens I think

Re: MZ-S gripes

2001-06-10 Thread Grigolia

Some random thoughts on why Pentax placed the exposure bar oriented
vertically in the MZ-S.
 1. When you think of something being over or under exposed you're
naturally thinking vertically.
 2. The exposure bar in the PZ-1p is placed vertically along the right
side of the image in the view finder (so Pentax is following recent
tradition).
Personally, I prefer the vertical display. I shoot BW exclusively
using the Hyper Manual mode with Spot metering and a modified Zone System
approach. To me the vertical display seems natural.

Re: MZ-S gripes

2001-06-10 Thread Grigolia

Paal,
I think the whole exposure bar problem is primarily a matter of
familiarity. I came to the PZ-1p from the Pentax 67. My first reaction to
the little wheels and mini-buttons on the PZ-1p was shock! What ARE these
things?
Than I read the PZ-1p Users Manual! Wondered what I'd gotten myself
into! And longed for the good old manual 67. But now I LOVE the PZ-1p.
I think if the MZ-S is anywhere near as rugged and professional as early
reports indicate no one will mind the little differences. :-

Re: Clue re next limited lens

2001-05-22 Thread Grigolia

If we're going to bet on the new Limited wide-angle lens I'd bet on 22mm.
If Pentax is consistent, the 43mm lens was midway between 50mm 35mm.
The 31mm was midway between 35mm 28mm. A 22mm lens would fall midway
between 24mm 20mm lens offerings.
For a medium telephoto I'd predict a 110mm lens. Which would probably
be followed by 175mm 250mm telephoto lenses.
And I still think if there is a 18mm lens in the near future it will be
an FA* lens. An 18mm f/2.8 is a pretty standard ultra-wide-angle lens
offering!

New Lens Series?

2001-04-29 Thread Grigolia

I was rereading the Pentax PMA 2001 Press Release for the MZ-S. And I
keep coming back to one paragraph that begins: Along with the launch of the
MZ-S, Asahi Optical will also introduce a selection of new lenses and
accessories to optimize the MZ-S performance.
As far as I've heard, the only new lens designed for the MZ-S is the new
24-90mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom lens. Any rumors, speculation, or pure guess work on
what these new lenses may be or when they may be announced?

Initial Thoughts on the FA* 28-70mm Zoom

2001-04-28 Thread Grigolia

I've only had the FA* 28-70mm zoom for a few weeks but I love it. (I'm
the list member that checked out tv's zoom.)
If you like compact Pentax 35mm lenses this zoom might seem heavy at
first. But as I've used the Pentax 67 II the lens seemed light. The lens
balances perfectly on the PZ-1p so after a few rolls you shouldn't notice the
weight. And the build quality is superior to my 43mm 'Limited' lens.
I never use either the auto focus or auto zoom capabilities. (Ok, I
admit it, I'm a manual snob.) Operating the lens manually is quick and easy
even in low light.
The negatives are sharp and crisp. 8x10 prints are not quite as sharp
as prints made from my FA* 24mm prime lens, but are sharper than any zoom
I've tried.
For general photography this zoom will be my lens of choice. If I have
the time and desire for a fine print I'll switch to my FA* prime lenses a
sturdy tripod!
 Hope this proves helpful!

  Solar Terrestrial Dispatch

29 March 2001

MAJOR CLASS X1.7 SOLAR PROTON FLARE ALERT

 Supporting imagery is available at:
http://www.spacew.com/astroalert.html

A major class X1.7/1N solar proton flare was observed erupting from the
mammoth naked-eye sunspot group identified as Region 9393 at 10:15 UTC (5:15
am EST) on 29 March. This event, although not tremendously large in spatial
size, was very bright in x-rays. Increasing energetic proton densities at
greater than 50 MeV (million electron volts) from the event began to be
observed shortly after 11:00 UTC (6:00 am EST). Protons are expected to
continue gradually increasing in density throughout the rest of the UTC day.
There is a risk of proton densities becoming strong enough to begin causing
minor satellite anomalies (single event upsets, phantom commands, etc).

A fairly well defined Earth-directed full halo coronal mass ejection was
observed emanating from the Sun, beginning near 10:26 UTC in SOHO spacecraft
imagery. An accurate time of impact of this disturbance is not yet available.
However, it is a reasonable estimate to assume that the disturbance will
impact the Earth on 31 March or perhaps 01 April.

The impact of this latest coronal mass ejection should come on the heels
of the anticipated impact of an earlier coronal mass ejection (currently
expected to impact on 30 March). This series of events is likely to result in
a prolonged period of enhanced auroral storm activity during the 30 March to
01 or 02 April time frame. Observers interested in watching for auroral
activity should keep a close eye on the sky and conditions during this time.

An addendum will likely be posted later today concerning this event.

PMA 2001 a Week Away ...

2001-02-04 Thread Grigolia

PMA 2001 is only a week away. It will be held 11-14 February in
Orlando, Florida. Is anyone on the list planning on attending?
Will anyone be giving onhand observations?
Or will we have to rely on official Pentax releases?

Re: Protective filters

2001-01-04 Thread Grigolia

Shel,
Pentax apparently makes two grades of filters. The basic filter just
reads Pentax. The higher grade filter is a coated filter. The coating is
the same SMC coating found on Pentax's lenses. This higher grade filter is
labeled SMC Pentax.
The SMC filters are solidly built. The 49mm filter ring mount is thin
but strong. The 67mm 77mm ring mounts are quite massive.

Re: Protective filters

2001-01-03 Thread Grigolia

I routinely order SMC Pentax UV glass filters from B+H with each Pentax
lens I order. The SMC coating on the filter matches the SMC coating on
Pentax lenses. But the filters ARE expensive. (Even slightly more expensive
than B+W filters.) The 67mm filter I ordered with my 24mm f/2 lens ran
$59.95!
