I discovered it quite accidentally: After returning from my first photo trip there I was completely unimpressed by what I saw on my screen when I looked at my shots. For many of them I couldn't imagine why I had pressed the shutter. Then, a few weeks later, I tried rendering one in B&W and it just came alive. WHen I went through the rest of the photos they all "worked" in B&W in a way that they simply hadn't in color. I grew up shooting B&W film and tend to "see" certain kinds of photographic scenes that way even now. They're all long shutter speed (from 1/4 second to 20 seconds, IIRC). Oh, and the ones that look as if I were sitting on a rock in the middle of a raging river were actually taken while sitting on a rock in the middle of a raging river. Climbing out there with several thousand dollars worth of camera gear was nerve-wracking to say the least. Re: Back Home from Grandfather Mountain.
Good to see you at the mountain, John. It was a really good weekend. I'm at my friend's place in Ashe county (about 50 miles from GFM) and got thoroughly soaked on the ride here. The phrase "biblical proportions" pretty well describes the downpour I rode through. I'm hoping for better weather for the next two days of travel back to Boston. Motorcycle travel is not for wimps! One sad note to the weekend: Don Nelson, former Pentax rep and pretty much the founder of the PDML (at least he was the one who decided to turn it over to Doug Brewer) died on Saturday. He'd been in poor health for a few years and had a stroke a week ago. It would be difficult to overstate Don's influence on the PDML as a whole and several of its members, myself included, in particular. I'm still down in Thomasville, Georgia at the moment but I'll be heading up to Grandfather Mountain for the Nature Photography Weekend first thing tomorrow morning. I just talked to Doug Brewer on the phone and it seems he'll also be arriving tomorrow afternoon. So there's no telling what kind of trouble we'll get up to. GESO: MotoGP in Austin, TX
It's been a busy week with the end of the semester coinciding with the release of the PDML Photo Annual, so it's taken me a long time to throw together a gallery of photos from last week's race. It's a bit rough and hurried but it should give you an idea of what the event was like. http://www.robertstech.com/temp/AustinMotoGP2017/ Equipment was the K-1 and K-5 for bodies, the K-1 being used with the FA*300/2.8 and a Sigma EX 1.4x teleconverter. The K-5 was used with the DA 12-24 and the DA-L 55-300. Things I learned: It's much easier shooting these events when you have press credentials. Bob Capa was right: If your pictures aren't good enough you aren't close enough. It's much harder shooting these events when you have press credentials. It's work. You can't stop and enjoy the race. And you have a shedload of images to sort through, edit and upload on a short deadline. Always have your gear organized well before the event. I meant to take the Pentax F 1.7x teleconverter but grabbed the Sigma by mistake. I could have used the extra reach of the 1.7x and I think the Pentax is a little sharper. The Pentax is definitely faster focusing (I can actually notice a difference between the faster bikes/riders and the slower ones because the slower ones are more likely to be in focus!) No matter how good your gear is this kind of photography takes skill. Practice is vital for this kind of work and I very much noticed how out of practice I am. My race day photos would have been much better if I'd bought a three day pass and photographed all the practice and qualifying sessions first just a couple of days practice would have helped me get back a lot of my motorsports photography technique. Just finishing up the last bits of this year's book. I think it should be uploaded and available tomorrow (Thursday, 27 April). This will be too late for me to order any copies to bring to the UK (I'll be there May 6-13) but I could get some to bring to the Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend (June 2-4) and of course for anyone in/near/visiting the Boston area any time. Re: Advice for a newly minted photographer
Go to a library and look at books of photography. Lots of them. Then decide what kind of photography you'd like to try. Street photography? Landscapes? Fashion? Wildlife? Look at as many genres as you can and decide what you'll like to pursue. Always remember that you can change your mind in a month or a year or ten years, but pick one to start. Ask around about what kind of kit suits your chosen interest and go buy some secondhand stuff at B&H, Adorama or KEH. PDML Photo Annual update (21 March)
After a couple of phone calls and a couple of emails we've made the selections for photos that will be in this year's book. A small handful may change when we get to pairing them up together in spreads, but that's not very likely. I've got the theme chosen and the overwhelming majority of the design work done, somewhat to my surprise. After weeks of panicked work while feeling myself to be falling hopelessly behind schedule I suddenly find myself all caught up. Don't worry my ability to fall behind yet again will doubtless reassert itself shortly. For now, I just have to pair up the images as best I can and start building the spreads in InDesign. Mostly grunt work. Of course, there's always the issue of getting Doug to write the foreword... -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PDML Photo Annual update
Sorry I've been silent for a while but you know how life intervenes on things... We've got all the photos saved and organized and we've almost finished making the selections. I'm in the middle of Spring Break but, as you may have heard, also in the middle of a major storm hitting the east coast. It's turned out to be not quite as bad as feared but I still spent most of the day shoveling wet, heavy snow out of the driveway. I've got the theme for this year's book settled and most (but not all) of the typography sorted. In the next couple of days I'll try to get through to Doug Brewer for a final consult on photo selection. In the meantime I'll be working my way through the graphic design of the main section header pages and assorted other oddities. (It's gonna be really cool. Trust me.) In short, things are proceeding as usual: I've started out in a deep fit of depression, not knowing how this thing will ever come together, and proceeded on to a sudden fit of inspiration leading into the oppressive weight of the onerous workload ahead and the panic of not knowing if Doug will deliver his Foreword on time, to be followed eventually by the exhilaration of the release of the final publication. That's the plan, anyway. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Anyone ever tried it? -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

In the PDML Photo Annual archives I have a few photos by the late Bill Owens. How abut if I submit one of them in his memory? He was a long time contributor to the PDML and a good guy in general. (He was the one who alerted me to the existence of the Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend, in fact.) -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

You're going to *love* the K-1. Great control layout and user interface combined with stunning image quality. I use mine primarily with the FA 20/2.8, the 31/1.8 Ltd and the 77/1.8 Ltd. Re: What can Pentax do to convince Sigma to make K mount lenses again?
Larry Colen wrote: >There was an interview in the past year or so, and I can't find it right >now, which listed two reasons. At this point Sigma is going to be designing all its premium lenses with electronically controlled aperture. The change for each lens mount they support is minimal compared to designing complete mechanically operated aperture just for one manufacturer (one with small sales volume, at that). Although it isn't clear from the photos I've seen so far it certainly looks to me as if the new D-FA 50/1.4 has no diaphragm actuation lever. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
