Re: New Products at PMA

2003-02-20 Thread P Temmerman
I suspect that we'll see some new things at PMA and then more new things at CeBIT.
This is the first time that Pentax will be a CeBIT exhibitor and I would assume that
they would want something newsworthy to amrk the occassion.

Next month is the perfect time for new product releases as major shows are scheduled
for the US, Europe and Japan:

PMA 2003 - March 2 - 5
CeBIT 2003 - March 12 - 19
Photo Expo 2003 Tokyo, Japan - March 14 - 16

Could be that we'll see a range of new products at PMA, possibly with the emphasis on
film cameras, then a big kick-off of digital at CeBIT (this is the first year that
Pentax will be an exhibitor) and finally the grand introduction of the whole new
line-up to the Japanese domestic market.

I should have written 'are launching'. I contacted Pentax Europe regarding some minor

The site is www.pentaxeurope.com follow the link for "Europe".

Not entirely true. By law, ALL German beer must be produced according to the
Reinheitsgebot and there is some truely nasty stuff around. I've run into a number of
German beers in Germany that would put a spike through your head before the glass was
finished. Found this to be particularly true with beers produced around Stuttgart and
Kaiserslautern. I suppose it what you get used to: Stella did the same to me when I
first moved to Belgium but now I can swill it for hours on end with only minimal
discomfort the following day. But give me a Leffe any day.

Re: Anybody out there do aerial photography

2002-10-29 Thread P Temmerman
To all,

Thanks for the input. I think that I’ll stick to the 28-70 as I want to record the
impressions of being in the air rather than ground detail. Since the glider has a
canopy, the 80-200 might be in the way. Most likely will use a 200 or 400 print film
as I don’t want to spend time on making f-stop/shutter speed decisions. Perhaps the
best approach is Dan’s and Deb’s.

Lon, I’m not too concerned with fluid disposal – I spent enough time on C-130s to get
over it. And Cory… are you saying that thoughts of your undoubtedly charming 2 year
old daughter’s portraits are absurd? Shame on you…..

Deb in TX: what part of TX? I spent about a year in west TX – San Angelo.

Thanks all,
Pat

Lately I've been playing around with close-up / macro with the lens wide open for

with wide-angle lenses. Flower petals are the main subject. When the gods are willing

carry a polrazing filter and possible a monopod which is also great as a hiking aid.

OT: AP 12 Oct issue - interview with Janet Wishnetsky

2002-10-11 Thread P Temmerman

I was in the local international magazine store in town thumbing through the latest
Amateur Photographer. I opened it someplace in the middle and thought “What the ….…… I
KNOW these pictures!”

The 12 October issue has a feature article on freelance photographer Janet Wishnetsky.
Janet (who is not a Pentax user, by the way) is a long-time member of the photography
club that I belong to and has become one of my all-time favorite “people”
photographers. Some of the images used in AP can also be seen at our club's website:
www.viewfinders.be - go to 'Members Gallery' and click on the appropriarte "Room". Two
of my favorite images from Janet are in her B&W gallery: "The Ninth Child" and
"Refugees in Train Wagon".

2002-10-02 Thread P Temmerman

Pal wrote: "The Pentax booth was arranged by the German Pentax distributor, not Pentax

Not at all strange and no different than in years past: Pentax Germany has always (at
least for the last 12 years) made the actual show arrangements, with the (former)
Pentax Europe office from Brussels handling hotels and other details. Asahi Optical
Co., Ltd. gave final approval for the arrangements but did not actually get involved
in any stage of the planning/arrangements. AOC always sent a delegation to attend the
show.

Perhaps the bigger-than-usual turnout of head office visitors (if indeed there were
more) this year might have to do with the change in management, management style and
general change in attitude of the company.

Photokina and Pentax - the future?

2002-10-01 Thread P Temmerman

Steven Desjardins wrote “You know, I hate to start speculation all over again, but the
fact that they didn't release anything might indicate that they just chose to skip
this show, no matter how big it is.

>From what I could see, a number of companies decided to “skip the show”. I almost
>had the feeling that Photokina has outlived its usefulness and may turn into a German

Although I haven’t seen any figures, it seemed to me that attendance was lower than in
the past. Saturdays at Photokina used to be a nightmare: overly crowded hallways and
massive queues just to grab a brochure – not to mention the battles to try to get your
hands on some hot new item. Photokina 2000 was more ‘humane’ and this year was no
problem at all. Sure, some stands were drawing crowds – the Canon digital section was
crowded and some other select areas, but in general it seemed like a fairly quite show.

In a market that is rapidly turning digital, with digital product releases scheduled
in terms of months rather than years, a 2 year duration may not make a lot of sense
anymore. The PMA show is an annual event and the CeBit Show in Hannover will now have
a hall available for ‘traditional’ camera manufacturers to showcase their digital
wares. I expect that Pentax will be there.

Keep in mind that these show are HUGELY expensive. I would guess that by the time the
floor space is rented, a booth designed and built, transportation costs for the
personnel working at the booth, meals, business entertainment and hotel rooms paid (at
massively inflated show rates) the minimum that a major company will be looking at
will be nearly a million dollars per show. Do the budget math – how many companies can
actually afford to support 2 PMA shows, 2 CeBits plus a Photokina in a 24 month period?

67 Questions

2002-09-22 Thread P Temmerman

To all of you committed 67 users:

- Is there any 'affordable'system for projecting 67 slides? I remember several years
ago that someone on this list (at that time) had picked up an old maybe large-format
projector that they then modified to take mounted 67 slides. I recall them saying that
they projected the slide across the street onto their neighbor's garage door.

- What is your preferred film for the 67?

The closest that Pentax came to a 'high-end' P&S was the Espio Mini (European model -

MOST things shown at Photokina are available within a month or two, if not
