Guys, this is Jason aka Rapture. I subscribed back with my other isp mail
yesterday as I have not been able to
access my ficnet.net pop account for a couple days. I had thought it was
the typhoon and the flood over here in
Taipei, Taiwan that caused much flooding and affected many companies
including my isp which caused it to go down.
Today, i got back and received this email from myself, from this address -

I do not know what is wrong but I have mcafee in my pc and it isnt affected
as far as I know. Even then when ficnet
was still up, it has virus detection and informs me each time an infected
exe file is being received. Hinet also automatically
deletes the virus file as u can see below. I also do not open any unknown
exe file and always delete away shit.
I do know the pc stuff and will not ever get myself infected, unless some
goon friend does it without me knowing.

I will do my investigation over my side and let you guys know of the outcome.

Thanks Kelvin for explaining on my behalf, appreciate.

Re: Filters for the SMCP-F Fisheye Zoom 17mm-28mm f/3.5-4.5

2001-06-09 Thread Rapture

Sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4.
Not for ya if you like to have filters on them. At most it will
take is a UV or remove it for a CPL.
With CPL and Lenshood, slight vigetting but I still love the extra 3mm
and what i can get for 1/3
the price for a lens comparable to the canon equivalent.

My 2 cents,
Jason

this in one package deal for a zoom?

I was just wondering about the SMCP-F
Fisheye Zoom 17mm-28mm f/3.5-4.5 and if there is filters that are
made for this lens. I am pretty sure that it has no internel filters but
perhaps small filters to attach to the back maybe? If any one who owns
this lens or who is familiar with it can get back to me I would
appreciate the extra information.

The other lens I am looking at getting if the
filters for the 17mm-28mm can't be done with is the SMCP-FA 20-35mm
f/4 AL
Is this a favorite for anyone out there in the
pdml world?

Recommendations for Light/Flash Meters

2001-06-09 Thread Rapture

Hi Friends,

I would like to hear recommendations from you guys out there on the most
suitable light/flash meter for me.

I have been using the MZ-7 for about a year and would be upgrading in a
month or two with the MZ-S.
I mainly do outdoor landscape and portrait shots and occasion still
lifes. I do both Slides and B W.
I sometimes encounter harsh weather conditions in country i am in and the
weather hasnt been good
recently. So i decided to get one lightmeter that can last me for years to
come.

I am not a professional but a serious amateur. There is also a possibility
of going further into it.
I travel a lot and probably need a light meter. Of course there are
reviews and places where i can
get more information on light meters but i just need to hear comments from
you guys before i commit,
why? because this list is one of the best i have seen around.

if there is need for me to provide more information for you to comment
upon, please let me know.

Cheers,
Jason Kiew

Hi Eddie, welcome to the list. I believe there are lurkers from both
Malaysia and Singapore but its
good to hear from you. I saw your three pics, love them. Good patience
there :)
I am now in Taiwan and Taiwan seems to import quite a substantial amount of
MZ-3 Limited Black body
package(with 43mm). Some Shops still have them and seems that no one wants
to buy them.
I have checked with Cathay Photo and a couple others and they have no
stock. And Damn, you have
both lenses, envy! Are you gonna get the 31mm Limited also? Should be out
in these 2 or 3 months.
MZ-S should be out in May over here. Will email you separately once i get
more time. Ciaos.

Hi All,

nice!!
I do mostly macrophotography and dabbled in some UV reflectance images. They
can be seen at http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/windows/htmls/index9.htm
showing macro shots of palm flowers not fruits as captioned. When I got my
LX about 3-4 years ago, I sold off a lot of other equipment to purchase it
and did not regret it at all. Since then I acquired the PZ1 SE, the
43mmf1.9, 77mm f1.8 ...I don't know when this acquisition is going to end!!
I have heard that MZ3 and the two lenses above now comes in black. Have not
seen it yet!! The silver chrome ones complements my PZ1 very well. These
lenses are beautiful and sharp!!

PUG Gallery Comments [Tom Van Veen Steve Larson]

2001-04-02 Thread Rapture

Tom Van Veen - One Way
What caught my eye the first time i saw this picture? The One Way
signboard. Next the clouds. And the black thick line.
Still unable to figure out what the black thick line is(rooftop?).
I am surprise the sky isn't that dark since a red filter was used.
However it did made the signboard cryout, and lighten the slopes and the
wall. I would like to tell you that I love this picture, the
composition, the title, the clouds and the signboard but IMHO i felt that
this picture could well be better for another theme. Pardon
me but i tend to view the theme and pictures related to it in such a way
where i can say Hey, look what nice patterns and textures
this picture has captured

Steve Larson - Yum!
Great idea and creativity. Those chocolates are so
inviting, both to the tummy and to the theme. I would even have
stop for
a second look and admire how they were made and how different each can
be. I see that your focus was sharp in the
center, pretty shallow depth of field i would say. Since there 5
types of chocolates in the picture, you may want to consider
setting
a smaller f-stop to make them sharp so that more emphasis can be placed
on the pattern and textures. I am also unable to figure out
what is the white area on the top center to left picture, and the
pinkness in a couple of chocolates in the front. Better DOF would
reveal all that to the eye. I believe this shot was taken pretty
near to the chocolates as distance affects DOF. Looking at the
picture again, it may be possible to have a few compositions from
different angle. But I still love the idea and how these chocolates
can actually portray the idea
of the theme.

I admit i am being rather harsh on my critiques but this is what we need
to improve.

In my most humble opinion.

has used Pentax gear for more than a quarter century. He has since
augmented his Pentax equipment with other brands/mounts. Anyway, he swears
by the Nikon soft-focus filter. He explained to me at length how it differs

Re: Tokina ATX270 28-70/2.8 (Not PRO model) opinion welcomed

2001-03-09 Thread Rapture

I would say this would be the best third party standard zoom around.
Solid Built. Sharp.
do a search under http://www.photozone.de/
under pentax compatible, f2.8, standard zooms.
I still like the AT-X better than the AT-X II.
and who said it isnt a Pro Lens?

Hi all,
Well, I'm getting another body through auction. (Woo hoo!!)
It'll be my first AF body, and come with F35-80/4-5.6.
However, I prefer a constant open F value, and came across
with the above lens. So, I'd like your frank opinions on
this.
If anyone has/had this zoom, how does it feel, and how well
(or poorly) does it perform? And what is the appropriate
price?
I've searched KEH for its modest price, but they don't seem
to have one in stock.
Your opinions/comments will be highly appreciated.

" Climb It! " by Jason Kiew

You know, this shot *does* make me want to climb it. :) The angle is
excellent, as was your decision to crop out the sky. I personally would
have gone with a smaller aperture to try to squeeze out as much DOF as I
could, at least in the foreground. And if you're trying for a symmetrical
look, you could work on positioning the handrails more equally. As it is,
the right one doesn't quite reach to the bottom of the frame and seems a
little tilted. Or maybe it's the stairs that are tilted. The shadows,
however, are intriguing and well-documented. Great job! I like the
shadows on the left railing and along the bottom of the right railing,
too. That telephone pole on the left isn't doing very much for me, and I
wonder if that could be removed by using a slightly lower camera
position. I'm very impressed with the shadows. For a photo taken in
bright sunlight, you did quite well. There's really no glare or hot spots
in the shot, other than the house, which looks good the way you have
it. Congrats!

Thanks for the critique.
I was away in Central Taiwan for a 2 day excursion and can't get enough.
Basically can't get enough of this country actually. Back to the picture,
I had only like 2 minutes before i am overwhelmed by another group of tourist
and that place is so crowed(as you can see through the right poles). Did 2
shots
of it, one at 17mm, the other at 35mm, so time was not on my side.
Part of the telephone wire would still be seen no matter how i move since i
did my 2 shots
lying down with hands supported on the ground, guess only way is to remove
it digitally.
I just like the way the shadow to form 3 patterned shape. The sun was on
my left, like the
8oclock position, that's how the shadow gets its shape. I would love more
sharpness and DOF
as you mentioned but in that situation and with people staring at you for
lying down in front of
the stairs, i think it made me nervous a little. I am just glad i was
there. Thanks once again
for your comments, appreciate them.

Hello
My advice is : DO NOT BUY Tokina: AT-X Pro 270 AF
28-70mm f/2.8
Unless it is a very very good bargain !!!

its a discontinued model since replaced by Pro II. Going
for NT$7,500 which is about USD$215. What do you think?

You can find a much more better lens: SIGMA 28-70mm
f/:2.8 EX AF !!!

sigma is cheaper purchased brand new, however i believe it isnt
as well built as the tokina, weather if it is the Pro or Pro II.
Is optical quality that big a difference between the sigma and the tokina?
what kinda enhancment is there on the sigma if i may ask?

Of course, it is not as well built but the optical
quality is much more enhance !!! And Sigma makes lower
its price because of a coming up new version. But
optically it will be the same ! So you may affort to

i thought the sigma is new enough...

buy a 50mm f/:1.4 AF or the 135mm f/:2.8 FA !!!
If you prefer Tokina, the new 28-80mm f/:2.8 seems to
be a better good bargain (Longer range )

no doubt, yes but i dont need to extra focal length in my humble opinion

This is the major opinion in France about these
28-70mm f/:2.8 zooms
See you

thanks! is there any chance u could leave a email?

Re: Film Questions

2001-03-01 Thread Rapture

Bill, i use Kodak Porta 160VC and Fujicolor NPH 400. The Fuji is good for
overcast conditions, both give excellence skin tones, color and
grain. Reala can be considered too. Supra and Superia comes next. For
black and white, the two pro-oriented chromogenic films, Ilford's XP-2
Super and Kodak's T-Max T400 CN.

If NPH is not available, go for the 160VC.

I have a wedding to photograph in a couple of weeks, and once
again, the
film choices have changed on me. I don't shoot a lot of weddings
anymore, and tend to shoot either black and white or chromes,
for a variety of reasons.
I will be using Kodak film for this, but am undecided about
whether Portra or Supra would be the better choice.
So, a bit of background about this wedding. I will be doing
it completely on 35mm colour negative film. There will be no
studio portraiture, we will be going to our local legislative
building to do photos amid the marble columns of the Grand Old
Lady of the Wascana.
When I was doing this sort of stuff years ago, I would use a
tripod, hold the flash above the camera and drag the shutter
speed down to around a 15th second to allow good fill from the
primarily tungsten lights. This imparted a beautiful warm glow
to the picture that I found very pleasing.
With this in mind, would I be better off with
Portra or Supra?
I haven't really shot much Portra, and no Supra at all, but
I trust Kodak to provide good picture quality no matter which of
their
films I choose. What sort of differences are there between the
two groups?
Also, I will be shooting 400 speed to maximize the available
light without compromising the shutter speeds over much. Is one
or the other noticably less grainy? When I ran my resolution
tests two winters ago, I thought the Portra 400 to be
surprisingly grainy, much more so than I was expecting. Have
they improved it? Is this an area that the Supra is better?
I do thank you for any advice you can give.
thanks
Bill

Your choice for a f/2.8 Zoom

2001-02-19 Thread Rapture

Hi all, this is my first posting in PDML since i joined.
I owe a MZ-7 and also has in hand a PZ1P. I am in need
of a sharp and good zoom at long focal length. After doing
some research, this is the list i narrow down to:

[Tokina 828AF PRO 80-200 f2.8]
Diagonal Angle of View 30°20'-12°20'
Closest Focus Distance from Film Plane 1.8m (5.9ft)
Filter Size 77mm Diameter 84mm (3.3)
Length 184mm (7.2)
Weight 1,350g (47.2oz)
Tripod Mount: Not sure

[Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX]
Angle of View 34.3º-12.3º
Closest Focus Distance from Film Plane: 180/70.9
Filter Size 77mm Diameter 84mm (3.3)
Length 183mm (7.2)
Weight 1,220g (43oz)
Tripod Mount: Not sure

[Pentax 80-200 f2.8]
Angle of View: 30.5º-12.5º
Diaphragm: Fully automatic
Minimum Focusing Distance: 1.4m (4.6 ft.)
Macro Magnification: 0.19x
Filter Size: 77mm
Weight: 1,507g (52.7 oz.) w/hood; 1,591g (55.7 oz.) w/tripod mount
Tripod Mount: yes

All 3 are pretty heavy and @ 77mm. Does the Tokina have a good tc
to go along?
The sigma has the 1.4x 2x but it seems to be available only for
Nikon D mount, anyone
uses them on their MZ and ZP?
I believe the pentax tc should work with the pentax prime right? Anyidea
if black is available for pentax?
What is the difference for the price for these 3 lens in your
country?
What do you think of the focusing speed for that 3?

CHeers, Jason
