So what do you do with em?
So we all take photos. For those who don't take pictures professionally, what do you do with your photos? Stash them in boxes? Frame them? Stash them in boxes? Give them to people? Sell them? Stash them in folders on your computer? I took all my favorite photos and pinned them (not through the photo, mind you) to the wall in my study. Then I can see them all the time. Also, I like to take my more favorite photos and skectch them and then hang those on the wall or add them to my porfolio. However, I admit, a great number of my photos still end up in boxes and photo albums. What do you do? rg2 *PENTAX SAMURAI*

Re: Sorta got published
LOL, does the rg vs rg2 give it away? Well, it wasn't just the fact that the last name's the same and you're from the same area. After all, you've got a very popular surname for Texas. It was: Last name's the same, live in the same area, and BOTH USE PENTAX! yep, he's the whole reason I like pentax, my first camera was a basic olympus, got most of my learning how to take care of a camera on that one (dropped it down a mountain. twice. still takes great pictures) and then I inherited his pentax p30t. Re: Stripes on digital image - followup.
I don't actually know, but I recently noticed the same sort of stripes on a picture my dad had taken. He told me that it was an abberation of some sort in the sensor because it was straining to take in photons in a low light situation. So when you take pictures in very low settings I think these lines show up where the sensor is not as strong as the rest of the sensor (or whatever it is that takes in the light to create a photo, sorry I don't know much about digital jargon). You might check back later to see if he also posts a more coherent reply. rg2 *PENTAX SAMURAI*

I guess the Vikings got there during summer, where the coastal areas appeared quite green. Remember that the climate at that time was considerably warmer than it is today. Greenland is up to this day still a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Erik the Red, was a Norwegian Viking (actually rebbel an a murderer - a kind of an outlaw - a refugee from Norway and Iceland) left Norway to go to Island and later moved on to Greenland. On a trip to Greenland in 985 he missed Greenland and reached North America, which was then called Wineland, because they found wine plants there (somewhere in todays Canada, I believe). The first European to see North America was a man from Iceland, travelling with Erik the Red. His name was Bjarni Herjolfsson. Actually he dissovered North America, not Christoffer Columbus, who got there about 500 years later. Erik the Red Never reached America himself but wnt back to Greenland. His son Leif the Happy, got to America 10-14 years later. They never really established a Viking coloni there, because the native population (indian, inuit) was giving them a very hard time. So, it was in fact the Vikings who discovered America. After that the world was never the same... Hey you guys, just thought I would toss out one my random and rather infrequent posts, have fun :o) Just for starters, so you know what I am talking about, in the movie The Last Samurai, Japan is going through its industrial revolution but the Samurai think it is a bad idea to have so much technology because everyone is forsaking the old traditional values of honor. Therefore, I think that all of us here on the Pentax discussion list who refuse to switch over to the digital world should call ourselves the Pentax Samurai, because we still believe in the old ways of true art and honor. I believe digital photography is basically the same as photographing with film. The overall technology is the same: A lens is covering an adjustable opening in a small, dark chamber (=camera), in which a light sensitive reciever/perceptor/recorder is placed for the purpose of recording and storing an image, which is drawn by the lens, in a (short) period of time. How the recording device is made does not change the basic principals of photography IMO. As far as Pentax is concerned (this is a Pentax user mailing list) - well Pentax does not provide/make the sensors anyway. Most Petnax lenses are suitable for both film and CCD sensors (and others) anyway. Hey I just wanted to tell everyone how great I think all the pictures are this month. :o) Seems everyone is kinda putting out their comments, figured I would try also. Red and green vegetation by Thrainn Vigfusson, I really love the contrast of colors in this picture. Hot Water by Cotty, This is SO cool! Did you ever see the documentary at the end of Disney's Bambi movie? They took a bunch of pictures of milk dropping so that they could draw it acurately. Too bad you weren't on their team! Bell Flower by Robert Herz, This is just really beautiful to me - especially all the really tiny drops of water on the edges of the petals. Fountain in the Luxumbourg Gardens, Paris by Ann Sanfedele, I like this one because it is really dramatic. Fountain by Bruce Dayton, So bright and pretty! All these pictures are so well done to me. Sorry if I didn't complement yours specifically, but I really think they are all great. :o) Rebekah

One of my recurrent themes is people reading; this is a nun in a monastery garden in Northern Romania: http://www.web-options.com/Moldovita1.jpg (with thanks to Valentin Donisa for driving me around!) But, since using the Kodak Supra range of print films, and also scanning them, I'm beginning to suspect I like Supra better as an all round film. The colours are more muted, with less contrast and a subtler range of tones. Kodachrome can sometimes look rather brutal by comparison. -- Cheers, Bob Tuesday, January 13, 2004, 5:34:58 PM, you wrote: Actually, I also enjoy Kodachrome 64 as it was the predominant film my father used to use, and he turns out such beautiful slides that I also have an appreciation for it. Re: Ducks
Thanks goodness. I was afraid to ask someone what latitude mean, but fortunately you have supplied the information, and it all makes a lot of sense. Today I have half a roll of Kodak Elite, and then I want to use a print film because I am rather impatient, and also I believe there's nothing quite like holding a picture (carefully, no thumb prints!). I will definitely take a picture metered on the duck(s) so that I can see exactly what you mean in detail. I guess you could call that learning from your intended mistakes. :-P Rebekah - Original Message - From: Steve Desjardins [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2004 12:35 PM Subject: Re: Ducks I always shot print film so I'm the wrong guy to ask. For print film, you worry more about shadow detail since there are features of the development process the inhibits the highlights from washing out. For slides, you worry more about, i.e., expose for, the highlights. I happened to remember that you had asked about slide film so my comments were aimed that way. One easy way to view all this is that for slides the number of stops to go from very white to very back is about 5. This is called the latitude of the film. A simple meter will try to make the entire picture average to middle gray. If you were to base your exposure purely on the white duck (get really close so the white feathers filled the viewfinder) the duck would come out gray and the rest of the picture would be too dark. Green grass is often a good source of middle gray for most lighting, so you could meter on that and just accept the exposure. A safer this to do (to protect the highlights) it to meter on the white feathers and open up a stop or two depending on how white you want those feathers to come out. Of course, I'm explaining this to you in front of a lot of people who probably understand it better than I do. Print film has a wider latitude (more stops form black to white) so you don't have to be as careful. Digital is a lot like slide, so I have to think more about that now. Which is why I look a lot at the histograms. . .

Obviously, very slow. Provia (ISO 100): Fine grained, good color accuracy and saturation but rather low contrast. Decent latitude. Also the standard for many nature photographers. I bought a brick of it last year - it's OK and I got some good shots using it. I prefer the Kodak emulsions that are a bit punchier but would use Provia without a second thought if need be. Kodak E10oG: I've only shot one roll of this. It's said to be nearly identical to the E100S film that it replaced. E100S was fine grained, had a bit more saturation and contrast than Provia (IMO), about the same latitude. It's been my standard for serious work - I still have a brick in the freezer and will probably switch to E100G when it's gone. What I like about this film is the color accuracy and saturation - when I look at the fine gradients in a bird's feathers, IMO E100S and Vevlia do the best job of capturing the subtle tonal changes. But I miss too many bird shots with the slow shutter speeds with Velvia, so prefer E100S. Kodak E100 VS: Very saturated, not quite as fine grained as E100S / E100G, higher contrast. Can be a great film in the right conditions. My #2 choice after E100S. Sensia: I've hardly ever used it so have no opinion. Kodak Elite Chrome: Kodak's consumer ISO 100 standard saturation slide film. Good stuff, great with reds, a little more grainy and less sharp than E100S. Kodak Elite Chrome EBX: The high saturation consumer slide film. Wickedly sharp, somewhat grainy, very punchy colors and high contrast. I've not used the Agfa RSX films for some time, but found them to be quite good a few yeas ago when I did try them out. The first is an E6 film which can be processed at any number of labs and offers very nice grain and moderately saturated images. The second is a rather ancient film that is still revered in some quarters for its color and sharpness. It must be processed by a Kodak lab. If you're a film enthusiast, you should try a couple rolls of kodachrome then a couple rolls of Elite Chrome and compare the results. If you scan the images, you'll probably find that the E6 processed film is easier to scan . For projection, you may find that the Kodacrhome images are superior. But we're splitting hairs here. Re: Unsubscribe
Ok thanks Paul. Actually I just subscribed to the digest instead, and I could share my overpowering opinion with anyone, so I was just trying to get into the discussion. Seems I've upset everyone already. I have no plans for leaving though. I think you guys need some young blood on the list here. :o) Rebekah

to Shel
Hey Shel: I love your picture of the elderly lady in the rain, it's really original and very well done. I have a question, though, out of curiosity, because I am trying to learn a lot about cameras, as I previously owned a point and shoot. I noticed that everything in the picture is in focus, even things far away. Is this a product of a digital camera, or did you just have you lens on a high numbered f stop?
