I like the pics--both are very evocative.
Since Conrail snuffed it years ago, you must be referring to
Connecticut Shore Line East as the operator. I've seen (and heard, and
smelled) a few of their trains go by, and all three senses indicated
that they were diesels. Why they should be running diesels on
electrified lines is a mystery.

It is Milford CT. There are a number of old diners in a number of towns that I haven't visited lately that might or might not be neglected or being restored. There was one in Middletown CT where I ate a central Connecticut "delicacy", (steamed hamburgers), for the first time 12 years ago that seemed to have been abandoned not long after that. I think it was still there, unoccupied, on my last stop in town, but didn't take the time to stop to be sure. It's a small early streamline dining car style, IIRC, special more for it's location than anything else. Next time I'm up that way I'll try to get a photo. My main reason for being in Milford was to stop in at Milford Camera, not that I can actually buy much there, they carry everything but Pentax, and much as a number of EVIL cameras are tempting, I need another system like I need an extra hole in my head. Wonder of wonders they actually had something that I did buy, a twenty pack of 11x17 Inkpress photo paper, at half price. They had an interesting tale to tell, the Inkpress paper just wasn't selling, (I don't know why, I've been using it for larger prints for several years with very good results), so they decided to change over to Ilford for inkjet papers, just in time for Ilford Imaging to go bankrupt. I'm all about learning new stuff, so I appreciated P.J.'s correction (in the thread above). This led me to a little Google-Fu workout and I thought I might share something that might be of interest to the Photoshop users of the group. This little plug-in is free to try, but only works on images up to 800x600. To use it on larger images, one has to pay the 15 euro shareware fee: http://flofilters.free.fr/ I have not used either the trial version or the full version yet, but I thought I would pass the info along in case someone has experience with it or would like to give it a shot. Cheap enough, if it does what it says. It seems it has been recommended by a lot of people over the years, but not mentioned much in recent years - so maybe there is a better tools (or one that comes with post-processing software?) It doesn't have a very dark background, so matrix worked fairly well. I'd guess that had you used spot metering on it's body, you would have gained the desired additional feather detail. That's not CA that's sensor bloom. The lens itself exhibits almost no CA. Supposedly CMOS sensors have done away with blooming but I see it all the time in lens reviews, refereed to as CA, because well, CMOS sensors did away with bloom, but CA is almost always two color red/blue, bloom is purple or just plain white. Now I'm going into this because I'm really tired of seeing obvious sensor bloom in images and having it be miss identified as chromatic aberration, they are not the same thing. CA is caused by a lens defect, bloom can be exacerbated by having a high contrast lens with even a very good sensor. Neither of those things is a defect. The issue of removing the sensor bloom is another problem, I've never successfully been able to do that. If it's there I just live with it. After calibrating my new IPS monitor, with the help of Bruce (no, that is not a conflict of interest!) there is more distinction. Surprisingly the monitor was not too far off just out of the box, but it was enough to be visible. I look forward to seeing the actual prints... Basically, yeah, the faint tonal differences are intentional. But my first cut had more separation; the version you saw had been tweaked to push the whites right up close to 100% which flattened the tone curve near the top. I backed that off and restored the original version once again, so have a look at it now. It's subtle, but the outline of her arm is visible. As I said to Jack, you need you monitor to be well calibrated as I push the tones at both ends of the scale, without blowing them out. Jack, I've been studying a lot of B&W studio work lately. Here I was going for an almost abstract look -- outlines, areas of (almost) solid tones, skin pale, hair dark, etc. So I cranked the whites way up and the darks way down, leaving the midtones almost empty. There _is_ definition in the lights and darks but you have to look very closely, and have a calibrated IPS display too. :-) I intend to print this image to get the full effect. I expect to have to to a few runs to get it right as it probably pushes the paper/ink abilities. PJ, I especially like how the steam locomotive's wheel show. This is always hard to show being black on black. Being old and faded probably helps, but you still did a fine job. The 1890's swing bridge looks good. We have one of similar vintage in Rock Island, Illinois. I'd suggest including some closer-up photos of the ironwork. I'm always inpressed by the contrast between old and new bridgework. The old bridgework is like lace - holy with rivits holding it all together. The photo above the flowers is O Sensei, the founder of the art, and the reason I left it in, in this composition, is that it "places" the photo, not just in an Aikido dojo, but in our Aikido dojo.
