...and only have access to the kit lenses Those kit lenses are really optically fine. Don't short change 'kit' lenses from Pentax and don't shortchange your own picture taking. They're very nice. RE: A few more pictures
From: Jeffery Johnson Thanks John I will try again and yeah I know not good to try and capture a full on moon but hard to pass up. Jeffery The good thing about shooting the full moon is you get to try again every 28 days. And in the meantime, you can practice on gibbous moons, quarter moons, crescent moons, new moons ... go out and shoot the moon whenever you want to. Back when I was in High School, it was an almost regular occurrence on Friday Saturday nights. Exposure for the moon is different when it's on the horizon than it is whenever it's directly overhead. For the full moon on the horizon, I generally bracket in 1/3 stop increments from -2/3 to +3; overhead +1 to +3. It's not always exactly two stops over and I find shooting a range of exposures usually gives me at least one usable result. Sometimes you might have to slip the moon from one shot into the frame with the horizon from another to get the composition you want, but that's really a whole different discussion. - No virus found in this message. The moon is an excellent test subject because it doesn't really vary that much. In and of itself, there's only so much you can do artistically with it. But if you want to compare two telephoto lenses, or tripods, on any clear night, the moon is going to be pretty much the same. As a matter of fact, if you keep track of what exposures you use for photographing it, after a while you shouldn't even need to meter. Someone pointed out to me that the sunny 16 rule works with the moon. For what it's worth, I've got a few attempts at the moon in my night photo collection: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157612290300186/ I've tried different lenses, and teleconverters versus cropping and pretty much came to the conclusion that if I want the best quality photo of the moon, I should just buy one from someone with the proper equipment, such as a telescope on a clock drive. They're nice... Well, the moon doesnt do much for me, but it wouldn't if it were perfect technically so that doesn't count :-) I like the first sleeping neighborhood cat the best... I would link to that one to be more precise but flicker flummoxes me.. What is nice about these is the subtle color, the soft light and cat placement, like that comfy raggged old chair too. ann Jeffery Johnson wrote: Here are a few more pictures that I have taken with my K-R.
