Same here on my old AMD Duron 1800/ 512 RAM. Quite slow to say the least. Godfrey === I'm missing what Lightroom is supposed to be. I know Elements, and some of PS. How is Lightroom supposed to be different and/or better? o It has an integrated image management system that is greatly superior to anything in Elements (ability to create collections of images from various shoots, to rate images and to only show images above a certain rating, to tag and sort based on keywords, etc., etc.) And while it is quite able to create and maintain an image library for you (including converting to DNG while importing, if you so choose) it will also work with your images in their original folders if that's how you prefer to operate. o The RAW conversion is far more powerful than that in Elements (although perhaps not quite as flexible as that in CS or CS2), and includes curves, lens profiles camera profiles, plus a whole lot of other features I haven't played with to date. o It's not an image editor (so no healing brush, layers, etc.). In fact it never creates a new image file (unless you tell it to do so) - it just stores the history of the adjustments you make to the image, and applies them when you select the image. The one big drawback I see, at present, is that if an image is in multiple collections then these are all references to the exact same set of adjustments - there's no way to have both a colour original and a BW conversion in separate galleries. Adobe know this is a limitation, and will address this in a future release. Lightroom is supposed to be your primary interface to digital imaging. It deals with importing and catalogueing your images (including sorting, classifying and selecting those images that you want to work on). It also deals with adjustments you make to the whole image (white balance, exposure, black point, white point, brightness, contrast, ...), rotation and cropping. For many people this is all they will need for a first print (or export to web). To go beyond this (selective touch-up on just some parts of an image, etc..) you need an image editor such as Elements, CS, CS2, or some other external program. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

There's quite a good review/introduction on Luminous Landscape. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/software/lightroom1.shtml I've managed to download Lightroom for Windows and from the brief play I've had with it I think it is probably going to suit my needs quite well when it's finished. Re: Adobe Lightroom for Windows (almost) available now
No - that didn't work at the time I tried it - that was a broken link to a page on the Macromedia web site. It has now been replaced by a working link to a page on the Adobe site (and the link now says Download Macintosh or Windows Beta). As I said, the email was alittle premature; they hadn't quite finished updating the links on the web pages. So is anyone experimenting with it yet? I'd be interested to hear your comments. I have experimented on and off with Lightroom beta 1 and 2 on Mac OS X for several months. I'm not wholly convinced one way or the other yet. It's such a different way of working from my Bridge-Camera Raw- Photoshop workflow that it presents a challenge to understand how to get the most from it, and I keep feeling that I'm missing something. Re: Adobe Lightroom for Windows (almost) available now
Best be prepared for some kind of 'Elements' type of thing - or just a high price. Adobe has Photoshop and Elements and then they have the video editor Premier and you guessed it - Premier Elements. They seem to like the high priced pro product and the stripped down, low cost amateur product arrangement. Obviously I don't know really what they will do, but they do show some history with high priced, full featured products and low/no cost products for the entry level. -- Best regards, Bruce Wednesday, July 19, 2006, 2:04:52 PM, you wrote: RRR Godfrey DiGiorgi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So is anyone experimenting with it yet? RE: Adobe Lightroom for Windows (almost) available now
That's an interesting comment. What specifically is different about the workflows? I've used PS on and off for years (since v3), but never really invested a lot of time in learning it - it has always seemed to me like a hydra multiplied by an octopus times several squids crossed with a multi-limbed dinosaur. I'm starting to pay more attention to it since I bought my dslr and the new printer, and I have some hope that Lightbox will relieve me of the need to use PS too much, but Adobe won't cooperate with IE7 and/or the way my machine is configured, so I haven't downloaded it yet. I'm also a bit wary of learning something else at the moment. I'm very interested to hear more of your experience and the differences. -- Cheers, Bob -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Godfrey DiGiorgi Sent: 19 July 2006 21:46 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Adobe Lightroom for Windows (almost) available now So is anyone experimenting with it yet? Godfrey I've just started experimenting with it. So far I've just played a bit with the initial Library interface (I've only imported one photo collection so far), and am concentrating on playing with the Develop section. This gives me rather more control over the RAW conversion than was available in Photoshop Elements, and of course it detected that I had Elements installed, so defaults to that as the external image editor (but will let me use another editor, too). I haven't tried that yet, though, so I don't know how seamless that will appear to be. So far I like it - it's fast, fast, fast compared to Elements, and Adobe suggest it will get faster as later Beta updates appear. I expect I'll be buying the retail version once it is released; I've heard that the price will be above elements, but (considerably) below Photoshop CS - I'm expecting a street price of $160 - $180. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
