Airport X-ray Advice
I'm taking a vacation to Italy next week. I'm taking a lot of film (before it dies completely) and am actually checking baggage which I really haven't done in the past. If you check film, it's dead. Not just fogged--big exposed stripes from the scanning Xray. Make room in your carry-on! Take the film in your carry-on, and either use a lead-lined bag, or have them hand-search it (this is preferable, but I don't know how to say "please hand-search this bag" in Italian). It's best if the film is clearly recognizable as film, in a clear bag, for hand-searching. I used a ziplock bag on my last trip, inside of a black nylon bag to keep the light off of it. Take ziplock out of nylon bag at security, hand to security attendant. Do not put film into checked luggage. There were warning signs about this at San Francisco, San Jose, Heathrow, Luton, Douglas and Nashville airports on my last two trips. It is best to carry film in clear plastic sacks, optionally in an "XRay Proof bag" as well, and ask (beg) for hand inspection as part of carry-on luggage. Carry on luggage scanners are much less likely to fog film. Or buy it at your destination, process it there before flying home. Film is not dead it Italy. It sleeps with the fishes. Best to check as soon as possible what the rules are about film in hand-luggage nowadays. If they are against you then Godfrey's advice is best. Right after 9/11 I left BWI (the country's lowest rated major airport for everything at the time) and asked for my Velvia to be hand checked. They had no issue at all. Didn't even question it. I had it out of the containers and in a ziplock bag, so it was easy for me to pull it out of the camera bag quickly and request the hand check for my "Professional" film.
