Ansel Adams exhibition

2005-11-12 Thread David Mann
I went to the AA exhibition at our art gallery today. It's the only
showing in NZ so I wanted to be sure of seeing it as I doubt I'd ever
get another opportunity.

I'd seen many of the photos before in books and on the web. But
nothing compares to seeing the prints. They are absolutely
breathtaking - I have never seen anything like it before. Even some
of the photos I didn't think much of previously - seeing the prints
changed my opinion very quickly as I was able to take in the finer
details.

A must-see IMO.

It's always a revelation when you get to see an artist's work in the
original, rather than in the form of reproductions in books. Glad you
got to see this exhibition.

No kidding, especially someone like St. Ansel, and how he treated his
printing ("the negative is the score, the print is the performance").

I was lucky enough about a year or 18 months ago to see a Magnum
exhibit here in Toronto (I know I told you all about it already), and
to see iconic prints by my heroes (HCB, Erwitt, Robert Capa, Arnold
and more) is as close to a religious experience as I'll ever have .

Glad you got the chance to see the AA exhibit, Dave. Even more glad
to hear how much you got out of it.

For anyone who is going to be in the Boston area, there is an Ansel
Adams exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts through Dec 31. Called The
Lane Collection, it includes many prints which have seldom been on exhibit.

IIRC there were a couple of portraits and maybe a half-dozen
architectural ones. I don't recall seeing any commercial work there.

According to the AA website, I saw the Anne Helms Museum Set.

My only wish is that the prints were larger... like 6 feet high.
Just about every print had me walking closer and closer, constantly

Well, it's not at all the same, but the Magnum show (I think it was
called 50 years of Magnum) featured all 8x10s! Mind you, (virtually)
all of them were 35mm, and many (surprisingly) not that sharp even at
8x10.

With AA, however, huge would be wonderful!

OT: Ansel Adams Exhibition

2013-08-27 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

My wife and I are both emerging from 'The Lost Weekend' having lunched
on what we suspect was a dubious chicken (aka a crook chook) last
Friday. It's at times like this that a house needs more than one
bathroom...

However, before our date with the drumsticks of doom we went along to
the exhibition 'Ansel Adams - Photography from the Mountains to the
Sea', which is currently on at the Australian National Maritime Museum
in Sydney. The link between the exhibition and the maritime theme of
the Museum is a bit tenuous but I'm not complaining.

There are over 70 prints on display most, if not all, by Adams
himself. They are both impressive and inspiring - certainly to my
untutored eye. It's quite informative to compare the density and tonal
range of many of the prints with the lack of those characters in some
of the reproductions in the exhibition catalog.

Many of the images were photographed in Yosemite National Park, which
we had the great privilege of visiting just a couple of months ago.

Details here:

The exhibition runs until 8 December 2013.

I love the first. That diagonal line makes it. Very basic, very dramatic,
and very Ansel Adamish.

I think I've seen all the others before, except maybe for Pass Road (I think
you've showed something like it, maybe this is a different rendition). I
also really love Pass Road, lovely lines, depth and perspective and the sky
was
