Yep, I generally start missing it in late May. But I rather like my
cold weather, must be the Finnish side. Anything over 25C is too hot
unless the humidity's eally low.

We could really use a bit more rain around here (south-east US).

We've had occasional thunderstorms late in the day, but all we're really
getting is humidity reaching the tipping over point where it storms
down. It's been hot and humid, but that's just the moisture in the
ground getting baked out.

There's no net gain in rainfall. We're not there yet, but we're slowly
heading towards drought again. Maybe the fall will be wetter and we'll
dodge a bullet again.

But if it keeps on like this, 2011 is probably going to be a repeat of 2007.

2010-08-16 Thread Paul Sorenson
You could have some of the rain we had a couple weeks ago. About 6
inches of rain on two separate occasions about a week apart. The second
one dropped 6+ inches in about 4 hours. Streets turned into rivers,
basements flooded and collapsed. Most of the residential damage was in
the inner city where folks can least afford to do any repairs. No flood
insurance and they're talking about razing homes. A sinkhole opened up
at one intersection and swallowed a brand new Escalade - about 20 ft
down. The driver got out OK but he'd just filled up with gas and didn't
turn off the engine. The thing was still running 24 hours later - just
sitting there idling.

That's not an unusual problem, Toronto regularly runs through its snow
removal budget 1-2 months early whenever we get Canadian winters.

No, Toronto generally gets a quite mild winter. When we get a winter
that more resembles a real Canadian winter, Snow removal actually has
to work and that's not in the budget. And most of Canada greatly
wishes that Toronto wasn't technically in Canada.

It's not that bad, Victoria, BC doesn't even own a snowplow. Of course
they've had about 3 feet of snow cumulative in the last 20 years, 2
feet of which happened in one day about 14 years ago.

The Quebecois actually think that they are all that matters.
Think of an entire province that acts like the post office and you have
their attitude in a nutshell.

Quebec is sort of the spoiled stepchild of Confederation
I suspect that if they are foolish enough to hold another referendum about
sovereignty, they will be asked to leave, and we'll take Labrador back and

Well, or Westerners generally don't like Québécois and you're getting
the opinions of Westerners.

It's more than a subset of them are convinced the rest of us aren't
Canadian, rather than that they aren't. Said subset is in a demographic
vise and knows it. (Rather like Toronto is currently past 30% recent
immigrant; the Bay Street image doesn't fade very fast (what with Bay
Street still being there) but having one metro region have a quarter of
the population of a country still has side effects.)

I have no French to speak of but quite like Quebec and various Québécois
colleagues I've had over the years. Anyone with landscape photography
ambitions could do a lot worse than to spend some time around Quebec
City, and you could die of your age before getting through all the good
food in Montreal.

Note that while I'm a native Westerner, I'm bilingual (well used to
be, my French is bloody rusty) and also lived in Northern Ontario for
a decade, in a city which was 40% Francophone. I quite like the
Quebecois as a people and individuals and the province itsef is
gorgeous.

I however do not like their continual demands for special treatment
politically as well as for recognition as a 'Distinct Society' or a
seperate Nation under the same sovereignity. It's historical hogwash
and pure greed. The Quebecois have been a more equal part of
Confederation since the beginning (along with Ontario) and frankly,
both the Maritimes and the West keep getting screwed by them both.
Quebecois, or Quebec residents have dominated Federal Politics since
the 1960's. We've only had 3 Prime Ministers since 1968 who didn't
come from Quebec ridings and two of those lasted a collective 12
months in power (the third is our current PM, Stephen Harper). Not to
mention the billions of dollars in Transfer payments that already-rich
Quebec has received from taxes collected in Ontario, Alberta and BC.

Frankly, if they want to leave, let them. If not, let them shut up about it.

If not, let them shut up about
it.

Thank you for putting my thoughts into words.

Just another note on this, but Westerners are not in a demographic
vise, that's mostly affecting the Maritimes, and to a lesser extent
Quebec as the economic and population centres shift from being Ontario
and Quebec to Ontario and the West (BC/Alberta mostly). The west is
also much less homogeneous than Ontario or Quebec, which are dominated
by Anglo-Saxons and French respectively with most of the other
ethnicities being relatively new arrivals from the post-WW2 period.
The West was settled by subsequent waves of European immigration and
has had significant non-European immigration on and off for almost 130
years and there's really no dominant ethnic groups unlike in the east.

Folks form Southern Ontario and Toronto in particular are somewhat
notorious for assuming that their basic values define 'Canadian
Values'. The CBC, which is functionally a Torontonian monopoly, is the
most guilty, but given that much of the National Media is
Toronto-based and Torontonian-staffed, folks from outside of Southern
Ontario get this alot (Hate Toronto is not just a Western thing,
Northern Ontarians and Maritimers do too). Often times these 'Canadian
Values' aren't shared by those outside of Southern Ontario.

Interesting stuff. We toured through Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in
August last year and were bemused by the way the francophone population were
fixated on events that occurred 250 years ago, right down to the slogan on the
Quebec number plates - Je me souviens ("I remember").
We joked that the rest of Canada should adopt the slogan "Get over it!". They
seem to have the same bloody-minded attitude that afflicts the Irish. So much
energy wasted on meaningless issues, since one European derived way of living
is usually similar to another. It is nothing like living in the Middle East or
Arica where being part of the wrong group can result in persecution or death.

Sure ... for large values of "almost".

Make the value of "almost" large enough and Toronto's "almost" as far

It depends on if you are an anal retentive pedant or someone who can operate
in a world of generalities and doesn't mind a little hyperbole every now and
again.

I figure T.O is perhaps 400 miles north of SF.
That really isn't very far considering that Canada is NORTH of the USA and
SF is in the third state south of the border.

The same has been true of many parts of Northern Ireland for much of the last
forty years.

For that matter, there were parts of the North Bay in Boston where speaking
with the wrong (that is to say British) accent could be seriously detrimental
to your health. Fortunately it was fairly easy to spot if you accidentally
wandered into the wrong bar; the collecting tin for the IRA sitting openly on
the counter was generally a giveaway.
