Tom, Bill, et al.

I am a member of a local camera club that is very keen on submitting
their work to international competitions and winning prizes. Not for
sake of prizes as such but rather for other sakes which I shouldn't
mention here and now. I don't participate in this hmmm endeavor.

However, what I noticed over the years is that the guys in the club have
found their own understanding of what gets them there. So, indeed, they
get their prizes all right, but I also noticed that their photography
has become influenced by their intended audience (international photo
competitions juries)...

To that end, given that this is was our very first attempt with this
very venue, I think everything came together quite well.

I shall be very curious to see how the next year project will develop.

2010-05-13 Thread Christine Aguila

Thanks, Tim, for your kind remarks. Much appreciated.

As to your comments about exhibition picks: one thing to remember is SPACE
when doing an exhibit; exhibits are limited by space. Remember, our exhibit
had 44 photographs, which is HUGE. PDML is lucky to have been invited by a
gallery that could physically accommodate a large collection of photographs.

Also, it's my view Sue had interest in selecting a wide range of genres,
which reflects the spirit of PDML. PDML is not a one genre photographic
community, and I think she did a good job of trying to reflect our
diversity. If PDML has another opportunity to do an exhibit somewhere else
in the world, the curator of the gallery may not be interested in doing what
Sue did.

Cheers, Christine

Larry's dramatic silhouette menacing AnnSan as he photographs her in

Of the pictures on display, I liked Christine's wonderful Brown-line
composition the best.

OK, here's the controversial opinion. Well, perhaps not, because it's
a matter of personal taste. But, anyhow... I quite strongly disagreed
with the selection from the book for the show. Yes, they were very
good - a tribute to some combination of the PDML talent pool and

Re: Augenblick: Some shots and a controversial opinion

2010-05-11 Thread Tom C
Tim,

Thanks for the post of gallery shots. Fun to relive the moment.

Of the three I submitted, the one I personally felt most likely to
succeed as a piece of art, was neither in the book or gallery. Based
on past experience, I wasn't really too surprised though.

What does that say to me?

I more or less submitted (on relatively short notice) what I
considered possibly my three best shots of '09 (or more accurately
the three I felt most likely to succeed).

As photographer I simply supplied the raw material. The book
compilers and curator(s) did the selection of material.

There were some images hung that were not my favorites either. However
being essentially a non-themed gallery, I suspect the curator was 1)
subjective as we all are, and 2) attempting to be objective so that
images chosen for display would appeal to a wide spectrum of the
general public.

I remember Rowboats, Padstow which was outstanding and Tree in
Field without even looking at the book again. Both outstanding
photos and worthy of high praise, IMO. Maybe they just failed to
speak to Sue as much as others, or it could be she was attempting to
display a wide variety of subject matter, in a limited space.

In any case, I'm positive the curator cannot please all people (put
ourselves in her spot).

Irrespective of my own personal taste and predilections, the book and
gallery had a majority of shots that appealed me. Some shots that did
not appeal to me at first, grew on me as time passed - to my surprise.

I'm not saying anything you didn't already know, just blathering.

Tom C.

In the majority of cases, it was because the photographer chose not to
participate in the gallery exhibit. And we couldn't force 'em ;-)
And most of the people who didn't want to be in the gallery show were

I would have loved to have my piece on the wall too (assuming of
course that it made the grade) but like Mark said the likely cost of
the return/disposal of the print plus the cost to get it on the wall
was a little too much for me to contemplate at the moment, I'm sure it
was a similar case for many others too.

After having gone through this exercise, knowing the work I put into
my individual entries, the work that those who compiled the book put
into it, and the work the gallery curator and Christine put into it,
I've come away with an altered, possibly more accurate perception of
the entire affair.

Knowing the above, I now find myself somewhat less hesitant to
criticize selections that are made. I can't reasonably expect every
image I like to be included, and those I feel ambivalent about to be
excluded. It wasn't my role to select anything other than my own.
Such criticism would, in my mind, seem to devalue the hard work that
went into the production.

I'm not saying anyone's doing that, just that I respect the
individuals and the hard choices they must have had to make.

(and of course not all images were eligible for inclusion)

For myself, it was a terrific opportunity to get my work out there, even in
a relatively small way. Of the three images I submitted, I really do think
the one chosen was the weakest of the lot, but when I mentioned this to Sue,
she very strongly disagreed with me.
I wouldn't have included it at all were it not for a positive comment Doug
made about it when I posted it as part of a GESO last year.
I churn these images out pretty easily, and I tend to be somewhat
emotionally uninvolved with my own work, so it is always somewhat of a
surprise for me when one of my pictures touches someone.
I've done enough gallery shows over the years to not question the choices of
a curator. They know what they are looking for, and usually they have a
better eye for what will succeed on the wall than I do.
