How many Torontonians does it take to change a light bulb? Just one. They hold it, and the whole world revolves around them. :) (And yes, I know I shouldn't say "they" and "them", but until English invents a new word to take the place of he/she and him/her, I'm sticking with the plural.) chris

Your second one is more correct, though again Japanese doesn't usually stress syllables so Tah-koo-mar is the proper way. Think of the "ku" in "haiku"... that's a good reminder for the "ku" in "Takumar." Of course, I say "TAH-KA-mar" on a daily basis, so who am I to criticize? Must be that Canadian accent slipping in. chris

You're close Pat, We don't merely ~claim~ to have no accent. In fact, we don't. And, while Boston may be the Hub of the Universe, Toronto is the Centre (note spelling) of the Universe. cheers, frank Pat White wrote: > > Funny, I thought Canadians were the only people who claimed to have no > accent... > > Pat White -- "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. I"m with you, Fred, I've always called it "TAK-you-mar". Like you, it's likely so ingrained that I"ll never change. Maybe I should just stick to "Tak". And like most English speakers (I think), it's always been "ah-SAH-hee". Maybe that's why it's just "Pentax" now... cheers, frank Fred wrote: > Thanks, Ken, for the correction - . Re: How is Asahi pronounced?
US coloquial (sp?) pronunciation, in sentence format: I saw he had a Pentax.
Re: How is Asahi pronounced?
As of Oct 1, 2002, it's pronounced "Pentax." At 11:29 AM 1/23/03, you wrote: Is it AHH-sah-HEE or ahh-SAH-high or something else entirely? Dan Scott

Actually I tkae back what I just said. It's a-sah-hee . There is no accent on any of the three syllables. They are all pronounced equally loud. JCO > -Original Message- > From: J. C. Of course, I've been saying "TAK-you-mar" for so many years that it'll be difficult for me to change, but I'll try... Hmmm... Re: How is Asahi pronounced?
> Is it AHH-sah-HEE or ahh-SAH-high or something else entirely? I don't know, but I heard somewhere that the proper Japanese pronunciation is almost without syllabic emphasis, although your first example seems close to that intent. Nonetheless, I tend to (probably most incorrectly) pronounce Asahi as "ahh-SAH-hee". I even wonder about the word "Takumar". I always say "TAK-you-mar", but I've often wondered if it really should be something like "TAK-oo-mar" (or even something entirely different) - . However, I think I do pretty well with "PEN-tax" - , despite my Boston/Massachusetts accent. (Actually, we don't have an accent here, at the acknowledged Hub of the Universe, but the rest of the world does - . But I digress...) ;-) Fred

On 1/23/03 11:29 AM, "Dan Scott" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Is it AHH-sah-HEE or ahh-SAH-high or something else entirely? In Japanese language, as a general rule, there normally is no real intonation in pronunciation of words (boring language, eh :-). Intonation on the second syllable from the last is the English rule. In case of Asahi, if I have to put any sort of intonation, it might be on AHH-sah-hee, certainly not ahh-SAH-high. Actually, AHH-sah-HEE might be closer :-). Well no, AHH-sah-hee must be it. Cheers, Ken
