Sounds like February has been a good month for orthopedic surgeons. I should be
going home tomorrow after having had back surgery last Tuesday-stenosis repair,
fixing a few bulging disks and fusing a couple vertebrae. A painful couple days

everything and move my desk away from the window air-conditioning unit
that gives me a headache when the cold air blows on the side of my head.
Swapping tables around to put my laser printer down on that end gives me
almost 5' of separation from the cold air vent.

It proved to be slightly more complicated than that, mostly involving
vacuuming behind where the desk & the printer table have been sitting
for a number of years.

The real problem was I got very sick Saturday evening, 102 deg fever &
I've been fighting off the ague and a lot of damn pain since then.
Fever's down to just under a hundred now.

Called for a doctor's appointment with the VA ... May 19 is the soonest
they can fit me in. If it gets too bad in the meantime I'm supposed to
go to the ER at one of the local hospitals (and pay out of pocket).

I am back after traveling for almost 12 months.
Here is a map type of thingy of where we stayed during the trip,
Some places were a day, some 2 weeks. Less then 4% were caravan
parks. The rest was either national parks or free camping.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u626/sup8pdct/camps_zps3ec552b5.jpg

My wife broke her camera in a remote spot in the northwest region.
It was either save the camera or save her face and serious injury.
She refuses to put the strap around her neck as it annoys the living
hell out or her, so she was carrying it. Her foot got caught on a
rock while getting over a pile of rocks. The camera (K5) went
sailing through the air and hit a rock ripping the lens mount clean
off the body. I put it back on again when we got back to camp
without joining the wire up and it still worked, tho no telling when
the screws will rip out again with a big lens or a minor fall. Off
to the camera repair place soon with it.
She also dropped it a few days earlier on to rocks. maybe that
weakened it a little.
Mine is fine tho it took a tumble out of the 4X4 and broke the 77mm
skylight filter on the 16-50 2.8. Again, the wife was at fault. tho
i didn't put it back in the camera bag so will still blame her ;)

She is now asking 'can we go again, please?'

The trip wasn't long enough, but pressing matters like seams to
get in the way.
I took something like 10,000 images on the trip. One or two may be
good enough to get somewhere in comps.

Looks like a great trip. I've visited most of those locations (for
nowhere near long enough) apart from the north-west and the Top End,
which are tentatively planned for 2015. I'm envious of your travels.

I'm Back

2014-02-09 Thread sup8pdct

I am back after traveling for almost 12 months.
Here is a map type of thingy of where we stayed during the trip, Some
places were a day, some 2 weeks. Less then 4% were caravan parks. The
rest was either national parks or free camping.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u626/sup8pdct/camps_zps3ec552b5.jpg

My wife broke her camera in a remote spot in the northwest region. It
was either save the camera or save her face and serious injury. She
refuses to put the strap around her neck as it annoys the living hell
out or her, so she was carrying it. Her foot got caught on a rock while
getting over a pile of rocks. The camera (K5) went sailing through the
air and hit a rock ripping the lens mount clean off the body. I put it
back on again when we got back to camp without joining the wire up and
it still worked, tho no telling when the screws will rip out again with
a big lens or a minor fall. Off to the camera repair place soon with it.
She also dropped it a few days earlier on to rocks. maybe that weakened
it a little.
Mine is fine tho it took a tumble out of the 4X4 and broke the 77mm
skylight filter on the 16-50 2.8. Again, the wife was at fault. tho i
didn't put it back in the camera bag so will still blame her ;)

She is now asking 'can we go again, please?'

The trip wasn't long enough, but pressing matters like seams to get
in the way.
I took something like 10,000 images on the trip. One or two may be good
enough to get somewhere in comps.

FS FRIDAY and I'm back in phew!

2013-09-06 Thread Ann Sanfedele
Don't really WANT to sell the istd body , but since I have the K-5 I'll
entertain offers cause I'm really really broke - two teeth extractions
and slow ebay - a bit scary.

Pictures provided later if you need - I will tell you I decorated the
camera with green duct tape so I could see it before my cataract
surgery. just on the grip. I had one little hitch with it a while back

that was fixed by removing and reinserting the batteries.

I also have a film KX body - my trusty old beatup one that Eric H
did a CLA on last year and a K-1000 also, but the K-1000 would really
be only $20.00 plush shipping as it isn't made in Japan.

Don't know what to ask for the D - you tell me what you think is fair.

plus priority mail shipping in USA - about $10

with some trepedation - I have returned! :-)

Cataract surgery was May 2nd - only on my right eye - marked with a
purple arrow by a nurse. I can see clear_er_ but still not really clear
as that eye is also astigmatic and at the moment there is only
plain glass in the glasses I have on that side.

I was quite nervous beforehand, but it really was no big deal and
rather interesting to watch. My trepedation had much to do with being
knocked out and it ws local anesthetic and a sedative.

For all of you facing this - the improvement in color perception is
terrif - I can see those things in the shadows now, even though my
other eye still has a small cataract.

best of all, it had a definite positive effect on my glaucoma control.

(aside to Dan, 16-16 after surgery ) Doc said that happens in about 20%
of cases.

Only thing that is a bit hard to deal with is how very very drowsy the
medications post-op are making me. three different eye drops on a tight
schedule 4 times a day for a week, then 3, then 2, then once.
plus my twice a day glaucoma drops.

Big plus was my friend with benefits came down from Massachusetts the
day before and stayed for 5 days. One DOES need someone who is not
stoned by sedatives and post-op meds around for a bit. Especially if
you are a cheap drunk like moi - who doesn't drink at all, and hasnt
been even slightly sedated since 1995 after a car accident broke my back.

I was so wired -before_ the op that I was more "awake" than I though I'd
be the first day.

Turns out a friend's son , just by chance, was my nurse du jour before
the procedure, which was fun and comforting for me.

I swore I heard someone say "whose carving?" when I was wheeled into op
room, to which I replied "where's Alan Alda?" - this turns out tohave
been a total hallucination - my doc on second follow up was quite amused
but assured me no one had said _that_ and evryone in the op theatre was
far to young to catch the reference, not to mention the
inappropriateness. I do wonder what was said that became "carving" to
my ear.

I actually watched the whole thing, in a way - you don't have any sense
that anyone is even touching you - very odd - and what I saw was like
watching a spaceship, lots of intersting colors, and so on. Unlike
some friends who thought that nothing had been done and asked when
where they going to do anything, I had specifically asked not to be
heavily sedated, and I did know something was being done and talked with
the doc during it, who kept telling me I was doing fine, as if I were
a participant.

Then there was the nasty stuff afterwards - nono, not physical -
financial! If I had gotten the prescriptions that were written (It
occured to me they didn't know I didnt have the med thing on medicare)
I simply would have been unable to get them - close to $400 for those
three little drops ... HOWEVER,
FWB got on the computer and got it down to $88 through Canada and we
went back to the hospital for the follow up on Friday the 3rd with
papers... I bet they thought he was a lawyer.

Suddenly, I got 3 new prescriptions for generic equivalent drugs that
brought my investment in drops down to $59 total. (I get my glaucoma
drugs free.) Now, even if your health insurance covers those obscene
prices (which, of course, are chicken-feed compared to those for really
serious illnesses) sheesh...

By yesterday I got to reading archived posts and was awfully pleased
by the support you guys all showed - really sweet. Also saw the
book is out and read PUG comments and looked at PUG - wow, Ken! most
gorgeous! and felt bad about mine - darren, I betcha mean't me on the
"not so sharp" bit. I didn't put much effort into that choice, I jsut

with some trepedation - I have returned! :-)

Cataract surgery was May 2nd - only on my right eye - marked with a purple
arrow by a nurse. I can see clear_er_ but still not really clear as that
eye is also astigmatic and at the moment there is only

plain glass in the glasses I have on that side.

Turns out a friend's son , just by chance, was my nurse du jour before the
procedure, which was fun and comforting for me.

I swore I heard someone say "whose carving?" when I was wheeled into op
room, to which I replied "where's Alan Alda?" - this turns out tohave
been a total hallucination - my doc on second follow up was quite amused
but assured me no one had said _that_ and evryone in the op theatre was
far to young to catch the reference, not to mention the inappropriateness.
I do wonder what was said that became "carving" to my ear.

I didn't put much effort into that choice, I jsut
loved the book.

Bought the ebook of the annual - just wonderful! design, photos, Doug's
funny and touching intro and delighted to once again have a quote in :-)
Quotes selected were especially good this year, too - nonono not because
I made it...)

I'm still wobbly under the influence, and have to be especially careful
where I put things (the cheese went into the cupboard for a couple of
hours, instead of back in the fridge and the oatmeal ended up where

I keep the catfood yesterday.) but colors are much prettier and
I'm not wincing over glare.

I might even take out the camera...

thanks again for you well wishes

Thanks EVERYone for all the welcome backs (or is that welcomes back?)

Ken, that overlook was by Mary Carey's B&B - wonder if it is still
there. she was a live then and signed her cookbook for me.

Yeah, I loved the film as well - which I saw before I read the book and
it was chilling when I realised we were there at that time and so close.

with some trepedation - I have returned! :-)

Cataract surgery was May 2nd - only on my right eye - marked with a
purple arrow by a nurse. I can see clear_er_ but still not really
clear as that eye is also astigmatic and at the moment there is only
plain glass in the glasses I have on that side.

(aside to Dan, 16-16 after surgery ) Doc said that happens in about 20%
of cases.

Only thing that is a bit hard to deal with is how very very drowsy the
medications post-op are making me. three different eye drops on a
tight schedule 4 times a day for a week, then 3, then 2, then once.
plus my twice a day glaucoma drops.

I do wonder what was said that became "carving" to
my ear.

I actually watched the whole thing, in a way - you don't have any
sense that anyone is even touching you - very odd - and what I saw was
like
watching a spaceship, lots of intersting colors, and so on. Unlike
some friends who thought that nothing had been done and asked when
where they going to do anything, I had specifically asked not to be
heavily sedated, and I did know something was being done and talked with
the doc during it, who kept telling me I was doing fine, as if I were
a participant.

Then there was the nasty stuff afterwards - nono, not physical -
financial! If I had gotten the prescriptions that were written (It
occured to me they didn't know I didnt have the med thing on medicare)
I simply would have been unable to get them - close to $400 for those
three little drops ... HOWEVER,

Peanuts!

We've just had a case in Belgium of a seven year old boy with a rare
immune condition who needs continuous medication costing 20.000 USD per
month to survive and social security was making a fuss about it.
Eventually, the Belgian health minister negotiated a discount with the
company making the product.

At least the kid is doing fine as long as he gets his pills.

Ann,
Love your style and sense of humor. Absolutely great to be allowed to live the
experience with you.
My wife had both eyes done about a month ago and seems truly pleased (finally)
with the results. Her right eye was somewhat slower in showing significant
visual improvement, but I believe she's now decided it's a total success.

My best hope is that, even without glasses, you won't find it necessary to
strengthen the diopter setting on the camera(s). ;-))

with some trepedation - I have returned!

I didn't put much effort into that choice, I jsut
loved the book.

Bought the ebook of the annual - just wonderful! design, photos, Doug's
funny and touching intro and delighted to once again have a quote in :-)
Quotes selected were especially good this year, too  - nonono not
because I made it...)

I'm still wobbly under the influence, and have to be especially careful
where I put things (the cheese went into the cupboard for a couple of
hours, instead of back in the fridge and the oatmeal ended up where
I keep the

Last time I was under the knife the surgeon was a very shiny, black Nigerian,
and the anaesthetist a very Aryan Austrian. As the anaesthetic kicked in I had
the sudden panicky thought that I was about to be cut open by Idi Amin and
Doctor Mengele...

16-16? Very good indeed! Of course, you would never want to be
considered "normal," would you?

Yes, the price of the drops is outrageous. Medicare pays most of it
for me, and we use a prescription by mail service that make it even
cheaper, but the retail price is just way too high.

Great to have you back!
