Ah, good, I hoped you had but wanted to make 100% sure as it's easy to get
bitten. I've also been bitten by a couple of spammers using one of my domains
as a From: address... then I get 300 bounce messages in a day. Hasn't happened
for a while though (fingers crossed), I guess most sensible admins have now set
their systems to black-hole invalid addresses.

It's not a problem for me, except that Ann's provider is too dumb to
recognise that the From: address is not related to the actual sending domain
so they've blocked the domain on the From: address. They should be doing a
reverse DNS lookup and blocking emails where there's a mismatch.

Yeah I've had to deal with this kind of crap at work a couple of times. A
provider should never use one single parameter to judge an email as spam. Do
you have an SPF record set up? That might help in some cases but it's really a
long shot.

Unfortunately you don't hold much sway over providers unless you're the size of
ebay. Heck, even our own spam filter at work tends to delay or block emails
that I send myself when testing web apps.

Personally I think the whole email system needs to be redesigned from the
ground up. But I don't want to be the poor sucker who gets to do it as no
matter what you do you'll break some legacy system somewhere.

Here's a tip... make sure your server is configured to NOT send a bounce reply
back when it receives mail for an invalid address. Spammers will send out
messages where the From: address is the intended recipient then send the
message to a randomly-generated address at your domain. Your server would then
bounce the spam back to the From: address.

This one bit me not long ago as I'd had that setting still active on an old
domain. My hosting provider limits my server to 1,000 outgoing emails a day
and I was starting to get warnings from their system.

Cheers,

 address.

It's already set up that way. Anything incoming with an invalid To: address
is just ignored.

Anyone who has found a valid email address at this domain can send to that
email address, of course. What happens is that I receive mail from spammers
who've spoofed the From: address. Anyone who knows the domain name can do
that and there's nothing the domain name owner can do about it - this is how
phishing attacks try to fool people into thinking their bank is emailing
them.

What some spammers seem to have done is found a valid email address one way
or another and started sending spam to that address from an invalid but
plausible address with the same domain name. For example, from ad...@*.com.
They hope that the recipient is an office drone who will unthinkingly open
the email in the belief that it's from their company email management team.
It's just another kind of phishing attack.

It's not a problem for me, except that Ann's provider is too dumb to

Thanks Ann.

I have just retested sending to you, and have been bounced again. I have
saved the bounce message here:
http://www.web-options.com/Bounce.txt

If necessary you can forward the link to your email provider so they can
download the file and analyze what's going on.

I've looked at the bounce message myself - it inlcudes a link which I have
followed and which theoretically allows me to unblock myself. Whether this
works or not remains to be seen - allowing the sender to unblock themselves
sounds like a bad idea to me. It might help if you as the receiver follow it
and supply the unblock request through that link.

Thanks Ann.

I have just retested sending to you, and have been bounced

again. I

have saved the bounce message here:
http://www.web-options.com/Bounce.txt

If necessary you can forward the link to your email

provider so they

can download the file and analyze what's going on.

I've looked at the bounce message myself - it inlcudes a

link which I

have followed and which theoretically allows me to unblock myself.
Whether this works or not remains to be seen - allowing the

sender to

unblock themselves sounds like a bad idea to me. It might

help if you

as the receiver follow it and supply the unblock request

through that link.

Regards
Bob

Oooh I love that one!

BTW -- will try sending me another email off list to see if the
problem got corrected ?
before I really spend hours listening to recorded messages on the
phone to get to tech support on my server?

So, are you going for the Frank effect? Got to get all the way down
to 1/4 sec to introduce a little blur? The lighting and scene are
rather nice.
