 Hi Stephen,

According to the operating manual, only the central lower sensor is
functional with manual focus lenses. If you relied on the lateral
sensors to pick up the car when entering the frame, I'm afraid you
will be disappointed by the results. Maybe the panned pictures are
more likely to succeed. Keep us posted as how well you did.

Weekend fun: MZ-S Report

2002-05-20 Thread Stephen Moore

Hi, list --

Took my new MZ-S to its first serious outing over
the weekend, Brian Redman's vintage sportscar races
in West Virginia. First impression: I'm going to
learn to like this camera very, very quickly.

To get the negative out of the way first: As an
eyeglass wearer, in bright ambient light I had trouble
reading the viewfinder display at the bottom (though the
exposure bar graph was usually fine).

Second, even though I had set the PF not to let the leader
out, somehow it managed to reload the same roll I had just
rewound. First roll was ruined, but it probably was due to
operator error. Didn't happen again. In fact, I love the
way it lets me reload one-handed while balancing a 400/2.8
atop the monopod, and sets the ISO for me.

I really like the ergonomics, especially with the
BG-10 mounted. Enough heft, but not too much. As
road-test writers write, "the shift lever falls
readily to hand." All the significant buttons fall
readily to fingertip and feel very natural to use.
(Being new to both autofocus and shutter priority
AE, it'll take a little longer to learn how and when
to use them.) I could even use the shutter release on
the grip in horizontal orientation, which might help
my habit of flinching and dropping at the critical
instant while panning. I'm sure I'll find some ergonomic
nitpicks as time goes on (like the location of the
AF-point selector), but I think that's all they'll
be: nitpicks. It already feels really instinctive.
Thanks, Pentax.

Though I don't yet have any AF lenses, the trap-focus
and focus confirmation features of SAFOX system impressed
the heck out of me. Even with the big glass and a 1.4X-L
mounted, confirmation would almost always let me pick up
some bit of crap on the track (pebble, piece of tire tread,
etc.) to set my focal zone, and trap appeared to nail the shot
as a car drove into it time after time. I say "almost always"
because sometimes it would fail to lock on some seemingly
obvious feature like a transition from asphalt to concrete,
or a section of white line, and the finder display would keep
going out before I found something the sensors liked. That got
annoying. Trap also seemed to work quite well while panning,
provided I had chosen a good focal zone to begin with.

The proof will be when the pictures come back, of course,
but for now the MZ-S makes me happy.

(Happy is good, because over the same weekend I picked up
a ration of heartbreak: I think I trashed my pride-and-joy LX
beyond repair, but that's a whole other tale of woe...)

Regards,

Stephen

Absolutely! If anything, Pentax should make an FA-L 1,4X converter; that is an AF

Absolutely. I wonder what IS do to bokeh. Bokeh is very important in a long telephoto
lens because theres little chance that everything will be in focus with such a lens.
I have never really been a bokeh connoisseur but after aquiring the Limited lenses
I've become one. This lenses have more soul than Otis Redding! Not only are their
bokeh exxcellent but I would say that they are creative instruments. Try get down in a

only are the Limited lenses excellent in bokeh and in the 3D feel department, but also
most FA* lenses. Both the FA* 600/4 and FA* 200/4 macro gives superb bokeh and that

Hear hear!

Shooting with Pentax is fun. I don't take photographs for a living and so for me the
enjoyment factor is important.

Despite my earlier email, I don't need IS. I have the A70-210/4 but I hardly use it
because I'm in a very "wide-angle mood" of late.

See http://www.birdsasart.com/faq_superis.html and
other portions of the Arthur Morris site for a good
discussion of why IS is the best thing since... well
since uh... the instant-return mirror? TTL
metering? TTL flash metering?

The desirable films for wildlife photography are fairly
slow, limited to maybe a push to 320 ISO. One cannot
regularly depend on 800, 1600, and 3200 ISO films for
wildlife photography if the intent is publication.

And there is really nothing faster than a 300/2.8 or
600/4. Add IS to those lenses, and the elimination of
camera shake blur becomes commonplace rather than rare.

Canon is making everyone else look like they are
peddling Model T lenses. Really, Canon is leaving
everyone behind in certain areas of lens design,
specifically IS technology and their
soon-to-be-released ultra light long lens.

For those who need IS and light long lenses, and for
those who may not "need" that stuff to make a living
but just want it, Canon is unfortunately the one and
only choice. Nikon's VR lens is, from the accounts I
trust, overpriced junk.

But for me, I could never switch to Canon. That's
because I could replace everything in my kit (currently
a couple of dozen lenses which allow me to shoot from
18mm to 2400mm) with four or five Canon lenses and a
couple of TC's. And at least three of those Canon
lenses would have Image Stabilization.

Let's see, Henry, I'll take a 20 or 24mm, a 28-135 IS,
a 100 Macro, a 100-400 IS, a 600/4 IS, a bit of
extension, and a couple of those nice AF
teleconverters. No, no need for a 50mm - I have six of
them in K-mount that I can always stick on an ME Super
if I ever again shoot at 50mm.

But without all my Pentax-fit lenses, what would I do?
Half the fun is looking for bargain old or new lenses
and fiddling around with all that gear, manual focus
and autofocus and TC combinations and duplicate lenses
in focal lengths I rarely use, etc, etc... always
trying to find just the right combo to get the perfect
fit for all my photo needs.

Oh, and I haven't yet delved into the mysteries of the
Limited lenses (or old screw-mount ones), which I'm
sure would be a cure-all for all those unused 50mm and
100mm K-mount lenses I already have.

Five lenses and one body instead of twenty-five lenses
and five bodies? How boring. No Ebay bargains to
peruse? Gads, an appalling concept. No search for the
mythical inexpensive A* 135/1.8 to grace my unused lens
shelf? Shudder and groan.

I mean, did I make a mistake selling my K-series 50/1.2
just because I also have an A-series 50/1.2? Should I
have kept my A 35/2, even though I hadn't shot with it

ever give me the photos I know it is capable of? How
long should I keep the secret that my twenty-dollar CPC
24/2.8 Macro shoots better than any 24mm I've ever seen
from Pentax?

Nope, no switch to Canon for me. Then I'd have to focus
on just taking photos, and leave all this equipment
discussion behind. That's really scary.

For wildlife and sports photographers, IS/VR will allow shots that simply
wouldn't be possible with a tripod. Even if you use a faster film it'll
let you choose a higher shutter speed or smaller aperture than an equivalent
conventional lens. This translates into a greater number of successful images
and for a working professional that's literally money in the bank.

Apparently, there's a little loss in ultimate sharpness under ideal conditions
(tripod mounted and IS/VR turned off) but if I were earning a living doing
this kind of photography (and using by own gear as opposed to that provided
by an employer) I'd be shooting Canon, great Pentax glass be damned. If
you're relying on your photography to put food on the table you want to
get the maximum number of marketable shots you can. If you're doing landscapes,
architecture, portraits, fine art photos, you don't need IS/VR at all (I
think), but for PJ, sports and wildlife VR/IS = $$$.

Frankly I'm really surprised other camera manufacturers are taking so long
to compete with Canon in this technology and I'm *amazed* that Nikon has
been so slow in responding (they have only one VR lens IIRC). I'd guess
Nikon's professional support and marking clout have allowed them to hang
on to their masive share of the pro market but I think Canon will make inroads
if the balance doesn't shift a bit.

A lot, I'm sure, but it may be worth it. At GFM one of the speakers was

Other than the marketing hype, from reps and sales clerks, I really
have not had someone explain the need for this technology. I have not
checked into it, but how much does this add to the price of the lens?

Call me old-fashioned, though I do have an MZ-S on order, but I am

How do you anticipate the Pentax will handle the 1/6000 speed sync? Is it
ikely to be more useful than that of the Nikon?

Yup, so will the N90s, but that's if you don't mind using the flash within
10 feet since, to be able to sync at 1/
8000, the flash more or less acts like a strobe light flashing on and off
during the shot. Our systems
programmer has 2 N90s' and the SB28 and says that the 1/8000 flash sync is
nothing more than a selling
gimmick. More hype than true function.

Re: MZ-S Report

2001-06-13 Thread Pentax Clover

Hello
So I am not the only one who writes to Pentax !
Great !
I happy to read what you feel about the MZ-S. And of course, I understand
the enjoyement it procures to you.
As I thought, the MZ-S is mostly well knowed for its high cost, but not for
it small side !
I still believe Pentax needs to make a better SLR, nearer to a F-100, but as
you know, I am not here to make reproaches, but to enhance that each user
has its own wishes !!!
Also, I hope Pentax will make a good SLR as cheap as the Dynax Maxxum5 and
better !
See you

You're not the only one writing to Pentax. This forum was full of wishes for a pro
grade AF Pentax a few years back. Most wanted a small, compact lightweight, no
nonsense all metal body and also metal lenses. Thats what we got. I've noticed that in
Pentax recent restructuring plan it is mentioned that they will try to give their
customers what they want.

G2 in SLR form. Lenses & all.
I GOT IT! Limited lenses & all.
This camera is simply the best travel camera I have ever used. It is a
no-nonsense, solid, easy to operate hi-tech picture taking machine. No red
focus areas, but a system that indicates pretaking focus and confirmation of
picture taken. Fast low learning curve with 19 functions that serve you well.
This camera is made to last; serve the photographer; and be with you all the
time.
My final feelings? I ordered my second body two hours after unpacking my
first. Its not an EOS 1V, F5, F100, Max 9 or Max 7. Its a pro Pentax. Its the
one you carry, use and know it delivers. Well done Pentax. Thanks for

Now, Pentax get those BG-10 grips and the 31/1.8 to me before July 14th.
